Had Conducted a Study “Flood Damage Mitigation Measures
Report on the outcome of the Workshop Held on 14th June, 2016 To discuss on the findings of the study titled ‘Flood Damage Mitigation Measure for Barak Valley In South Assam including effects of Climate Change’ 1. Introduction: Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) had conducted a study “Flood Damage Mitigation Measures for Barak Valley in South Assam, including Effects of Climate Change” in collaboration with National Institute of Technology, Silchar. Moreover NIT, Silchar had partnered with IIT, Guwahati for undertaking the climate change componentfor the project. The final report of the study was submitted in the year 2014. The report comprised of study findings along with suggestions, short and long term for flood mitigation measures in Barak Valley. To take forward the study findings, the executive summery along with short and long term solutions were submitted to the concerned Departments viz. Water Resources Department, Soil Conservation Deptt, Agriculture Department, Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Inland Water Transport Department for taking necessary action. To review and understand the actions taken by concerned department in this regard, ASDMA organized a half-day workshop on 14th June, 2016 at ASDMA Conference Hall where the finding of the study were presented by Prof P.S. Choudhry, Civil Engineering Department, NIT, Silchar and also discussed suggestions regarding the implementation of the same.ASDMA also presented regarding the short & long-term goals and highlighted department-wise modalities in its implementation. The workshop was attended by 34 officials from various concerned departments and participated in the group discussion held to take stock of the actions taken and explore the strategy for future planning that would be helpful towards mitigation of flood in Barak valley. -

MAHS itself has created many such care sheets for a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates we believe to have straightforward care requirements, and thus make suitable family and beginner’s to intermediate level pets. Some species with much more complex, difficult to meet, or impracticable care requirements than what can be adequately explained in a one page care sheet may be multiple pages. We can also provide additional links, resources, and information on these species we feel are reliable and trustworthy if requested. If you would like to request a copy of a care sheet for any of the species listed below, or have a suggestion for an animal you don’t see on our list, contact us to let us know! Unfortunately, for liability reasons, MAHS is unable to create or publish care sheets for medically significant venomous species. This includes species in the families Crotilidae, Viperidae, and Elapidae, as well as the Helodermatidae (the Gila Monsters and Mexican Beaded Lizards) and some medically significant rear fanged Colubridae. Those that are serious about wishing to learn more about venomous reptile husbandry that cannot be adequately covered in one to three page care sheets should take the time to utilize all available resources by reading books and literature, consulting with, and working with an experienced and knowledgeable mentor in order to learn the ropes hands on. -

(Accepted November 25, 2013) ABSTRACT This study investigates the hunting of two endemic and threatened terrestrial chelonians, the Cochin forest cane turtle (Vijayachelys silvatica) and Travancore tortoise (Indotestudo travancorica) in the Western Ghats region of India. Informal interviews were conducted with indigenous and non-indigenous communities and Forest De- partment officials to understand the dynamics of chelonian hunting and the existent rationale and beliefs that supported it. Chelonian consumption was existent among both indigenous and non-indigenous communities, but was higher among the former. Indotestudo travancorica was exploited to a larger extent than Vijayachelys silvatica. Both the species were used as a cure for piles and asthma, to increase body strength and were largely captured during collection of non-timber forest produce and fire management activities. These chelonians were also sold to local hotels and served to customers known on a personal basis with minimal transfer to urban ar- eas. Conservation action needs to be prioritised towards I. travancorica, by upgrading its IUCN Red List status, and also through increased interaction between the Forest Department and local communities to improve che- lonian conservation in the landscape.
