Alfacionada - May2010 Page 9 Alfa Romeo Owners of Southern California A Request From Italy Dear Alfisti,
While we are proceeding with organising the Centenary, we are contacting you regarding a new approach: we would like the Alfisti.com Community to turn into the place where your passion and enthusiasm as Alfisti - while you are getting ready for the most important event of the year - is represented in a very special way.
As far as this idea is concerned we want to introduce two new sections in the Forum, setting up a place for individual Alfisti or Clubs to represent the countdown towards the Centenary through your material and your stories.
The two sections will tell your stories, your passion and your most important moments as Alfisti. One of the two sections will be frequently updated with interviews of you, the members of the Community. The other section will contain the images you are sending us to tell the Alfisti Community about the Centenary’s making-of.
Participating is very easy: just send us an email confirming your availability for a short interview, in which you tell us who you are and about your clubs. Or just send us photos and captions, telling us about how you are getting ready for the Centenary, the 2010 event eagerly awaited by Alfisti all over the world.
Once we receive your email, will contact you, giving you the necessary support, to experience the Centenary as proper protagonists.
Don’t miss this unique possibility to create an important page of the Alfisti’s history together.
Talk to you soon,

BRAILLE RALLYE 2010 Saturday, August 7
I look forward to seeing you all again this year! Information and registration packets will be sent in about mid-April
Question: If we had t-shirts available, would you be willing to purchase them at about $10, with proceeds going to the Braille Institute? Would they have to have a date, or could they just have the Braille Rallye logo and perhaps change the color every year?
See you in August!! Pat West [email protected]

AROSC Concours -- Send in your Entry Now
Our first Concours of 2010 will be held in conjuntion with the Huntington Beach Concours June 6. Entry deadline for the HB Concours is May 28. If you need an entry form, contact Phyllis Gaylard. This event is like Woodley Park with trophies, and only costs $30 to enter or $10 to come and ogle the field, a tax-deduct- ible contribution to the HB Children’s Library. Let’s have a great turnout of Alfas for our 100th Anniversary!
Alfacionada - May2010 Page 19 Alfa Romeo Owners of Southern California Don’t Miss the [Late] Spring Driving Tour San Fernando to Tehachapi, June 19-20
Celebrate the last days of spring 2010 on the road June 19-20, as we relive some California history and make some Club history of our own.
This year’s Spring Driving Tour begins at the Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana at the northwest rim of the San Fernando Valley. Our first stop is at Fort Tejon near the 3,000 summit of the Grapevine Pass, where the great camel experiment took place. Admission is $5, but due to budget cuts, there may be no Parks Service personnel on hand to collect.
For lunch, we will bask in a nice neighborhood park in the Garden in the Sun (aka: agricultural Arvin). The theme is Foods of the Great Depression, so this year’s picnic could be a real showplace for innovation! The judging categories are: Oakie-Arkie Agro Immigrant; Fabulous Country Farmhouse; Train Fare Tidbits; and High Altitude Attitude Food. So get creative! There are tables, but if you have room and can bring your own, please do so, plus chairs. We always need more prep and nosh space, and we can use them for happy hour on the motel lawn just outside our rooms
The route out of the valley will take us through the frontier outposts of Caliente and Bealeville and up to the bucolic bedroom community of Walker Basin, where your need for twisties and hillclimbs should be thoroughly addressed!
Once off the mountain, we’ll stop at the Tehachapi Loop for a tip of the historical chapeau to a real feat of engineering — a tunnel at which you can see both ends of a train with a length of more than 18 cars. While there is always room for more on the road, space at our special $45 Alfa- value, pet-friendly overnight spot, central Tehachapi’s RanchMotel, is filling up fast. Those who have already RSVPed are booked and we’ll get with you privately for bed preferences. Most rooms have two standard doubles; several have queens, and there’s one with three twins, in case anyone wishes to share. All have air conditioning. Please note: Our vintage landmark hotel is limited to 14 rooms and those lucky early-responders can walk to dinner. If we overflow, there is lodging downtown, but at this writing, the Club has no deals or reservations. Dinner will be in the private dining room at Jake’s Steakhouse. We may order off the menu, which includes hearty meal-sized salads (chicken, beef, tropical fruits), pastas, seafood (broiled halibut, battered cod, baked roughy) and meats (steaks, rack of lamb, pork tenderloin, chicken florentine, Kobe burgers). Prices range from $12 to $25.
Page 20 Alfacionada - May 2010 Alfa Romeo Owners of Southern California
Sunday will feature breakfast in the historic downtown district, a peep inside some of the boutiques and galleries within walking distance of the restaurant and perhaps a train or two. About 36 trains per day pass this way, so we have a good chance of being up close and personal with a fast freight.
We will drive home on the Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road through one of the region’s fabulous wind farms and come out near our favorite local sportscar track. Our now-traditional tour-within-a-tour this year is a visit to the Exotic Feline Conservation Center, a breeding zoo and research facility that is home to more than 70 of the world’s most endangered cat-like creatures. Admission is $5 general; $4 seniors 60+.
As always, we have a great time on these drives, so — L.A. members and Valleyites especially — let this be “The Year”. Join us!
Heavy hint to y’all: RSVP now to 714.964.9530 or [email protected], and book your rooms!
Special Incentive: If you can identify the image in the event ad elsewhere in this edition of Alfacionada, and be the first to tell us, you win a prize!

Page 22 Alfacionada - May 2010 Alfa Romeo Owners of Southern California Save the Date: July 17 Alfapalooza is Baaaack!
Atenzione Sailors! It’s Alfapalooza time.
Mark your calendars for July 17 and plan to join us for sun and fun on the waterfront in Long Beach. If you liked it last year, you’re gonna love it this year.
John Sangmeister of Gladstone’s Restaurant is again welcoming us to his pierside patio, where we have another opportunity to show off our very cool cars, and celebrate Centenario di Alfa Romeo. The long wharf and public promenade at Rainbow Harbor will again be our parking place.
Last year the reason to gather was the Transpacific Yacht Race, featuring the fabulous Alfa Romeo 2, raced by New Zealand Alfa distributor, Neville Crichton. We toured the vessel and cheered its progress to a decisively accomplished new record for the 2,225-mile ocean passage.
This year the theme is the Alfa Romeo Centanario and a suitable celebration is in the works.
San Diego, Orange County and Central Coast chapters are cordially invited to attend. Be there or be square: July 17; Rainbow Harbor Pier; Gladstone’s.

Alfacionada - May2010 Page 23 Alfa Romeo Owners of Southern California New Italian Culture Habit: Sapore della Domenico Villa Romano Green Farms Embraces AROSC by Elyse Barrett Photos by the Barretts and Nick Zart
Fun just seems to find us this spring. After enjoying the fabulous first- ever AROSC Chili Cookoff on Saturday, April 24, an opportunity for additional gourmet adventures presented itself in south Orange County on Sunday, April 25 — a dining adventure at the Sapore della Domenico (“Flavor of Sunday”) at Villa Romano Green Farms in San Clemente.
Some of us behind the Orange Curtain had heard about the quarterly tastings of Italian fruits, vegetables, wines, honeys and olives at Villa Romano, but hadn’t the perfect excuse to visit — not until we learned that the April event was to feature an “Alfa Romeo Rally” plus special guests from Italy traveling in from Los Angeles and San Diego. So we called Nic Romano to see if additional Alfas would be welcome on the rolling hillsides of his organic vegetable farm which shares acreage on the Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club. His gracious answer was “Yes” and more than two dozen of us made the drive to this quiet corner of the OC.
Villa Romano at Bella Collina is dedicated to Italian food and culture, growing all sorts of great veggies and importing delicious cheeses, wines and other delicacies. In addition to its public events such as this, they stage a Saturday vegetable sale and farm chef classes, supply local restaurants with specialty produce, and ship weekly or quarterly veggie baskets to subscribers.
Founder/owner, Nick Romano’s grandfather came to the U.S. 100 years ago, so he welcomed the idea of celebrating Alfa Romeo’s Centenario by granting us special rates on the tastings and a special area to “park pretty”.
