  • The World of Outlaws Is a Haphazard Dirt
Doug The World of Outlaws is a haphazard dirt track sanctioning body for winged sprint car racing that came out of nowhere in the 1980s and still is running strongly today, led by everyone’s favorite American racing driver, Kyle Larson. When I was reporting on the WoO in the 1980s and 1990s,I was fortunate enough to watch four great drivers -- Steve Kinser, the bull; Sammy Swindell, the brat, Bobby Allen, the sorrowful flower child; and Doug Wolfgang, the underdog. I talked to all of them: Kinser was always reaching for another can of beer; Swindell always seemed hostile; Allen always seemed out of it; only Wolfgang made a decent interview. Then on April 3, 1992, in Kansas, at Lakeside Speedway, he suffered burns over better than 30 percent of his body in a flaming crash. The WoO carried few insurance papers on its drivers; Wolfgang himself carried little; and so, to save his own life and those of his wife and two teenage daughters, he sued for damages. Nobody is supposed to sue anybody else in racing, so this earned Wolfgang -- the winner 140 Wo0 matches, the five time champion of the Knoxville Nationals, plus his first place finishers in hundreds of minor races -- the disgrace of being a fallen racing driver. Exaggerating his limitations as an underdog winged sprint car driver, Wolfgang told me, “I’m losing my hair. I’ve got lines on my face. I’m worn out.” But when I asked him if he enjoyed being the underdog, he admitted, “Yes, I guess I’ve always liked playing the underdog in my racing.” This, in turn, had given him the mystique of a moody, unpredictable performer.

  • Don Brady, Sr Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Class of 2018 There Are Very Few Families That Have Had a Lasting Impact on Dirt Track Racing More Than the Brady Family
Don Brady, Sr Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Class of 2018 There are very few families that have had a lasting impact on dirt track racing more than the Brady family. Don Brady, Sr was a 3-year-old boy that had the opportunity to spend time with his dad, Lawrence, in the race shop. Even though Don's mother, Dorothy, wasn't a fan of racing, Lawrence started the Brady family legacy in a Model A Roadster in the late 1940's while living in Wessington Springs, SD. The Brady's then moved to Buffalo Trading Post, SD, from there to Hartford, SD and eventually settling in Sioux Falls, SD. After graduating from Sioux Falls Washington High School in 1963, Don began his own racing career. The second-generation driver first took the wheel in 1964 with a car built by his dad and Gene Burscheid at Madison, SD. "I thought I was going pretty good there for a while," Brady said. "But after three laps and everyone was passing me, I knew I had some work to do." By the end of that first season, Brady had become a driver that was passing cars and not being passed. Don used the experience of the 1964 season to improve for the 1965 season, and the 20-year-old Brady showed he was the man to beat. Brady piloted their family owned and built Hudson to the 1965 B-Late Model Championship at Huset's Speedway. Don got married in 1969 and he and Michele lived across the street from Ed Stutzman (Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame Class of 2005).

LANCIA CA 1961 APPIA GTE ZAGATO 2707 SOLD Lancia 1961 Appia GTE At the November 1958 Turin Motor Show the new Lancia Appia GTE (standing for Gran Turismo Esportazione) was introduced, and deliveries started in January 1959 The GTE marked an important change in the relationship between Zagato and Lancia: it was the first Zagato car to be included in Lancia’s price lists and sold by Lancia dealers. For Lancia Zagato went from a buyer of chassis to an official supplier of specially bodied finished cars. First shown to the public at the 1958 Turin Motor Show, the first GTEs were delivered in early 1959. GTE bodywork was more low slung and streamlined than its predecessors’. The car had a continuous waistline, without the previous humps over the rear wheels; the nose was longer, V.O.F. At the rear the tail lights were partially sunken in and crowned by protrusions in the bodywork. The GTE went through numerous updates. In the Spring 1959 chassis upgraded to third series specifications were phased in. From the autumn newly enacted Italian traffic laws prohibited headlights cover. GTEs for Italy and some export countries had open headlights, and modified bodywork setting them further forward. During 1960 the improved Lancia V4 engine of 1089cc which developed 60 HP was adopted. The engine had a new Weber carburetor and an inlet manifold with a duct per each cylinder.
