The Waikiki Beach Walk is the largest development project in Waikiki's history. Nearly eight acres along well traversed Lewers Street has been completely rebuilt -- transformed into a colorful and spirited showcase; the gathering place for the new Waikiki. Energetic and inviting, eclectic and exciting, Waikiki Beach Walk is an impressive, new leisure destination to play and to stay. Benefiting from the island's cooling trade winds and year-round excellent weather, an outdoor entertainment plaza, nearly fifty new retailers, sixteen dining establishments, and five hotels welcome visitors and island residents alike; redefining the Waikiki experience. Learn more at waikikibeachwalk.com. Established in 1850, Kualoa Ranch is a family owned and operated 4,000 acre working cattle ranch, spread from the steep mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea. Located on the northeastern side of Oahu in the Hawaiian countryside, it is less than an hour from Honolulu. The ranch terrain varies from dense rainforest to broad open valleys and from beautiful white sand beaches to awesome verdant cliff faces. It is truly a paradise for outdoor recreation with many places accessible only by horseback, on an all terrain vehicle or by hiking. There are two major areas of the ranch: the northern half of the ranch including Ka'a'awa Valley which contains most of the movie locations sites, and the southern half that includes Hakipu`u Valley, the 800 year-old Moli'i fishpond, and Secret Island. If the ranch's views look familiar, that's because Kualoa Ranch has been the site of many television shows and Hollywood films such as Jurassic park, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun and 50 First Dates. TV shows include Hawaii Five-O, Magnun P.I. and the hit show LOST. Learn more at kualoa.com. 4 IN MEMORY OF SALLY MEYERHOFF XTERRA is dedicating this year’s race to Sally Meyerhoff. All the championship race bibs have “Sally” in the background, and she will be remembered during a moment of silence prior to the race. Just three months after winning the 2010 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, Meyerhoff’s life ended tragically on March 8. She was killed in a cycling accident in her home- town of Maricopa, Ariz. According to media reports, Meyerhoff collided with a pick-up truck in an intersection and died at the scene. She was 27. Meyerhoff ran her way into XTERRA lore on Dec. 5, 2010. In her first attempt at Worlds, she not only won it, she set a women’s course record in 1 hour, 28 minutes, 58 seconds. In a moment from the race that has already been immortal- ized on video, Meyerhoff tripped and fell off a ledge late in the course at Kualoa Ranch. She dropped several feet down into a patch of bushes. In typical Meyerhoff fashion, she climbed back up to the trail and continued to run, never looking back. Meyerhoff made it known – through her running blog and in media interviews-- that the XTERRA victory rejuvenated her career. “I don’t do a ton of trail running, but I do marathons and half-marathons and I train really hard at the profession- al level,” she said after her win. “This race tested me like I’ve never been tested before.” A month after Kualoa Ranch, she won the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon – a race she said she always wanted to win. With that, she set her sights on two loftier goals. One was the 2012 Olympics. The other was the 2011 Ironman World Championships triathlon. Her plan was to compete in her first Ironman in October, then focus on making the U.S. Olympic marathon team. Prior to her XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, Meyerhoff was already a recognized figure in the running world. She was an All-American runner at Duke University before beginning her professional running career. In 2009, she set an American record for a 10-mile road run at 54 minutes, 38 seconds. Seven mountain runners participated in this study. They competed in vertical (VR), 10-25 km, 25-45 km and >45 km races. The HR response was measured during the races to calculate the exercise intensity and PL according to the HR at which both the ventilatory (VT) and respiratory compensation threshold (RCT) occurred. The exercise intensity below VT and between VT and RCT increased with mountain running race distance. Likewise, the percentage of racing time spent above RCT decreased when race duration increased. However, the time spent above RCT was similar between races (~50 min). The PL was significantly higher (p<.05) during the longest races (145.0±18.4, 288.8±72.5, 467.3±109.9 and 820.8±147.0 AU in VR, 10-25 km, 25-45 km and >45 km, respectively). The ratio of PL to accumulative altitude gain was similar in all races (~0.16 AU·m-1).

  • 2015 Alaska Runner's Calendar
ALASKA RUNNER'S CALENDar 2015 The running community is extremely proud to have selected this outstanding candidate for the cover of the 2015 Alaska Runner’s Calendar. (Photo courtesy of Anchorage Running Club) Flip and Patti Foldager Hiking along a trail on the Kenai Peninsula, in the Anchorage Bowl or somewhere in the Mat-Su Valley, it would not be unheard of to suddenly be passed by Flip and Patti Foldager out for one of their trail runs. For more than 35 years, the Foldagers have been an inspirational and active force within Alaska’s running community – in particular, mountain running. Not only are they highly accomplished athletes but they have given much of their time to create, support and promote numerous running events and activities. When referring to the Foldagers enduring athletes, it becomes clear when you look at the events they have participated in. Flip has competed in Mount Marathon 35 times; Patti only 32 (but she did win it twice and took second five times). Basically, if there is a trail run somewhere between Homer and Talkeetna, chances are the Foldagers have done it. Events they have tackled are: Mat Peak, Lazy Mountain, Crow-Pass Crossing, Bird Ridge, Alyeska Classic Mountain Run, Hope Wagon Run, Lost Lake, Dip Sea Race,…the list goes on and on. They also assisted with and participate in the Exit Glacier Run. Of course, their true impact has been in how they have given back to the running community. Living in Seward, Flip is a volunteer for Mount Marathon Race and Safety committee.

  • Athletics Is an Exclusive Collection of Sporting Events That Involve Competitive Running, Jumping, Throwing, and Walking. the Mo
Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world. Organised athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC, and most modern events are conducted by the member clubs of the International Association of Athletics Federations. The athletics meeting forms the backbone of the modern Summer Olympics, and other leading international meetings include theIAAF World Championships and World Indoor Championships, and athletes with aphysical disability compete at the Summer Paralympics and the IPC Athletics World Championships. Etymology The word athletics is derived from the Greek word "athlos" (0șȜȠȢ), meaning "contest" or "task." Initially, the term was used to describeathletic contests in general ± i.e. sporting competition based primarily on human physical feats. In the 19th century in Europe, the term athletics acquired a more narrow definition and came to describe sports involving competitive running, walking, jumping and throwing. This definition continues to be the most prominent one in the United Kingdom and most of the areas of the former British Empire. Furthermore, foreign words in many Germanic and Romance languages which are related to the term athletics also have a similar meaning. In contrast to this, in much of North America athletics is synonymous with athletic sports in general, maintaining a more historic usage of the term.

AND THE SAIPAN SPORTS FEST MARCH 31 - APRIL 9 2006 PRESS GUIDE ssppoonnssoorrss The 2006 XTERRA Saipan Championship is presented by the Marianas Visitors Authority, and sponsored by the Pacific Islands Club, Paul Mitchell, XTERRA Gear, and Coca~Cola Beverage Co. (Micronesia), Inc. iinnttoo tthhee jjuunnggllee . AT THE 5th ANNUAL XTERRA SAIPAN CHAMPIONSHIP XTERRA is the world’s premier off-road multisport event. An extreme competition, the XTERRA format combines swimming with mountain biking and trail running. It has been described as one part triathlon, one part mountain bike race, and one part “survival of the fittest”. With its white sand beaches, warm water, jungle trails, and secret caves it’s easy to see how the XTERRA Saipan Championship became the “crown jewel” of the XTERRA Global Tour. In 2006 there will be more than 100 XTERRA races in 17 countries…but none quite like this one! The race starts with a 1.5-kilometer swim in the crystal clear waters fronting Micro Beach, follows with a 30k mountain bike ride that traverses island terrain to the top of Mount Tapotchau (the highest point on the island at 1,545 feet elevation) and finishes with a 12k trail run that takes competitors past World War II relics and through secret jungles and caves. The event is a qualifier for the 2006 Nissan Xterra World Championship held in Maui on October 29 - with 34 slots available to the top finishers in each age group (see page 12 for details). The race will also award points to amateur athletes racing in this year’s Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series.
