  • Fast Facts and Fun Trivia
Fast Facts and Fun Trivia ● The original book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car, published in 1964 with illustrations by John Burningham, was based on bedtime stories Ian Fleming told to his son, Caspar. ● The original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was first published as three separate books. ● Ian Fleming met Count Louis Zborowski when he was a schoolboy. ● The name and look of the car were taken from a series of racing cars built by Count Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s. ● The book inspired a 1968 movie written by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes, with songs by the Sherman brothers. It was directed by Ken Hughes and produced by Albert R. Broccoli, who was also a producer of the James Bond movies. It starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts and Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious. ● The role of Truly Scrumptious was reportedly offered to Julie Andrews, who had starred alongside Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, but Andrews, apparently feeling that the part was too close to the Poppins mold, declined. ● The movie’s title song was nominated for an Academy Award. ● Six versions of the car were built for the movie, and many replicas have been produced since. The car built for the stage production of the musical holds the record for the most expensive theater prop. ● One of the nondrivable Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars went up for auction in 1973 in Florida and sold for $37,000. The prized drivable model sold for $805,000 in May 2011. ● Ian Fleming owned a Ford Thunderbird, which went very fast but didn’t quite fly.

Pilot-Earle Smith and Anya Langbeyer, playing siblings Jeremy and Jemimah Potts, led the catchy opening number supported with a smiling ensemble full of colorful costumes and lots of energy (costumes by Natasha Hitchcock and Leslie Rollins). The Smith-Langbeyer team spoke as they would in rural England in the early 20th century, but with great diction and enthusiasm, the children in the audience hung on every word. The pair’s rapport was so strong many were viewing their programs to see if the two really were related. ! …the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis (CTA), has taken many audience members on a magical ride of creativity, imagination, and talent.

It is fitting that we should be here at the end of our ninth year, as two of the founder members of the executive, David Bradby and Jacky Bratton spent the larger part of their academic careers in the department and Royal Holloway has played an important role more generally in the work of TaPRA over the years, with staff convening working groups and a large contingent at every conference. TaPRA began at the University of Manchester in 2005. The organization, which had many different names in its first sixth months, came out of both a desire to celebrate our research and a frustration at the divisive nature of the (then) RAE. With a growing impatience at the lack of a national association for specifically UK-based theatre and performance research, the idea was to form an organization that could be membership based and conference lead, could be used by emerging scholars and more established scholars alike, as a place to try out their ideas. The original founders, David Bradby, Jacky Bratton, Maggie B.Gale, Viv Gardner and Baz Kershaw were joined by Maria Delgado, Brian Singleton, Kate Newey, Andy Lavender, Sophie Nield and Paul Allain – as the founding executive.
