  • We Are So Excited to Welcome You Back
WE ARE SO EXCITED TO WELCOME YOU BACK I couldn’t be happier to finally be writing this welcome message to you. It’s been an interesting time since my last one; our centenary came and went; our stage was filled not with performers but emergency food provisions; and our team were meeting colleagues through computer screens rather than greeting guests in our beautiful building. We know it’s been a hard year for everyone else too and we’re so excited to welcome you back to experience the magic of theatre once more with this packed programme. It’s only right that after the 100th year of this local treasure, our first season back should be filled with national ones, so we’re delighted to be welcoming cricketing legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott, much-loved music star Tony Christie and the fantastically funny Jasper Carrott amongst a host of brilliant acts this autumn. Fans of folk and country in particular are in for double delight as both The Shires and Seth Lakeman will be gracing our stage while there are also appearances from Elkie Brooks, Eddi Reader, Lee Mead, Michael Portillo and even the brilliant Jason Manford. Lastly, if you missed our fantastic centenary exhibition on stage this summer, there’s an extra chance to see it and find out about the Palace’s fascinating story at our Heritage Open Day event. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon! Carys Coulton-Jones Theatre Manager YOUR SAFETY We know that many of our guests will still be a little nervous about visiting after so long.

  • Fast Facts and Fun Trivia
Fast Facts and Fun Trivia ● The original book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car, published in 1964 with illustrations by John Burningham, was based on bedtime stories Ian Fleming told to his son, Caspar. ● The original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was first published as three separate books. ● Ian Fleming met Count Louis Zborowski when he was a schoolboy. ● The name and look of the car were taken from a series of racing cars built by Count Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s. ● The book inspired a 1968 movie written by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes, with songs by the Sherman brothers. It was directed by Ken Hughes and produced by Albert R. Broccoli, who was also a producer of the James Bond movies. It starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts and Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious. ● The role of Truly Scrumptious was reportedly offered to Julie Andrews, who had starred alongside Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, but Andrews, apparently feeling that the part was too close to the Poppins mold, declined. ● The movie’s title song was nominated for an Academy Award. ● Six versions of the car were built for the movie, and many replicas have been produced since. The car built for the stage production of the musical holds the record for the most expensive theater prop. ● One of the nondrivable Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars went up for auction in 1973 in Florida and sold for $37,000. The prized drivable model sold for $805,000 in May 2011. ● Ian Fleming owned a Ford Thunderbird, which went very fast but didn’t quite fly.

Lucie Podroužková, PhD. 1 BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ENTRY Adamová, Radka. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Musicals Brno: Masaryk University, Faculty of Education, Department of English Language and Literature, 2007. Diploma thesis supervisor Mgr. Lucie Podroužková, Ph. D. ANNOTATION This diploma thesis deals with British musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and his works. The first part of the thesis introduces Lloyd Webber’s biography, his close collaborators as well as his production company the Really Useful Group and description of all his works. The main part of the thesis is aimed at his musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar , rather their origin and development, the main plot and their main characters that have many things in common. Both these musicals are based on topics from the Bible. The thesis also deals with the librettos and their translation into Czech. 2 I declare that I have worked on this thesis on my own and used only the sources listed in the Bibliography.
