Our star of the show is of course Chitty herself and she started off life earlier this year in Frome, Somerset with a company who built her from scratch. We discovered that she was ideal in size and weight for the Wyllyotts theatre so we acquired her! Since then, after some modifications and upgrades by our very own Carractacus Potts, Nic Corden, she went on a mini tour to Berwick On Tweed on the Scottish border in July and Cambridge in September. Chitty really has been on an adventure around the country and now flies in to Potters Bar for her 4th production of the year. Coming up for 2020, we have an old favourite, My Fair Lady, in the Spring and The Scarlet Pimpernel in the Autumn. We are always open to new members so if you fancy treading the boards or helping in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me or anyone on Committee. So, sit back and enjoy ELODS’ version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - the story of our fine four fendered friend! Her first job was with the BBC radio as a winner of the Carlton Hobbs radio award. She has worked in many theatres throughout the UK and appeared on television and radio in a long career. You may know her from her shows at the Dugdale including Lady Killers and The 39 Steps. She loves working with ELODS and this is her 15th show with this company. Chitty has been a real challenge, but it has also been a lot of fun working with all the children and fabulous leads. Enjoy! Mark Newport – Musical Director Mark has now been working with ELODS for over 30 years. Alongside this and teaching commitments, he has had a successful career in London’s West End, working for many years on Les Misérables, for which he has conducted performances in London’s West End and on the UK tour. Mark has taught at Guildford School of Acting, Mountview and Guildhall and is a member of the Music Staff at Queenswood School Hertfordshire. This is Mark’s 67th show with ELODS! David Adams – Choreographer David was delighted to be asked to return to ELODS after having such a great time choreographing, 42nd Street, Legally Blonde and Lend Me a Tenor! David rejoined the clan direct from choreographing CHICAGO, but unfortunately due to an injury was unable to complete the work on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He is indebted to Paula Bland and the entire ELODS family for their understanding. Paula and I hope you enjoy the show! Paula Bland - Choreographer Having started with ELODS (many years ago) as a performer and choreographer, she was happy to help David out by joining the team for this show. Paula enjoys both performing and choreographing for local groups and is glad to be back at ELODS after all these years. Frank Bundle – Stage Manager Frank has been involved in amateur theatre for over 35 years. He became involved with ELODS when asked to crew for Sweet Charity in 1982. He has subsequently stage managed every major production bar one and has been involved in the design and construction of sets for several of our more recent shows. In 2011 he was presented with the prestigious NODA Flame Award for service to Amateur Theatre. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is Frank’s 71st show with ELODS! Fiona Corden – Production Manager This is Fiona’s 9th show as Production Manager and she is now fully versed in the licensing of children and animals, the dimensions of the Wyllotts’ wings and the best times to ask the Treasurer for more budget. She sends a huge thank you to everyone involved in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Greta Jenkins – Production Secretary Greta has been a member of ELODS for nearly 40 years- playing many parts (usually rather peculiar ladies!) in various Committee roles and as Production Secretary for 10 years. Her professional experience includes being Vice Principal of a London drama school, Theatrical Agent and working as a tutor on TV, feature films and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She was also the producer of G and G productions, the resident theatre company at the Dugdale Theatre. Hilary Thorne – Costumes After 25 years you would thing costuming a show would be easy, but every one brings its own challenges and difficulties, which is why I enjoy it so much! Many thanks to Lesley, Sarah, Eleanor and Juila for their help. Lesley Clay – Props Lesley has been involved with a couple of Amdram groups in North London; her main responsibility being Props. Earlier this year Lesley was Stage Manager for a production of 39 Steps and also A slice of eel pie at the Camden Fringe. She has enjoyed working FFBOS (Finchley and Frien Barnet Operatic Society) and G & G Productions recently. She has loved working on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and hopes you enjoy the show. Michelle Shaw – Front of House NODA award-winning Front of House Manager, Michelle has been meeting and greeting our patrons for many years. She is always looking for new volunteers to help with ushering and selling programmes, raffle tickets and ice creams, If you are interested in helping at Future shows, please contact her on 07710 494 010 Production Team Director - Gail Ashwell Musical Director - Mark Newport Choreographers - David Adams and Paula Bland Production Manager - Fiona Corden Production Secretary - Greta Jenkins Stage Manager - Frank Bundle Lighting Design and Operation - John Castle Lighting Operator - Josh Hornsey Sound Design and Operation - Peter Donaghey Costumes - Hilary Thorne Properties - Lesley Clay and Simon Dingomal Artwork Design - Sunny Carter Front of House – Michelle Shaw Programme – Simon Dingomal and Becky Beach For Wyllotts Theatre General Manager – Ginny Williams Operations Manager – Chris Edwards Technical Manager – Peter Windsor Marketing Manager – Debbie Wiltshire Orchestra Reed 1 - Jennie Small Reed 2 - Tim Eaton Reed 3 - Mark Hayes Trumpet 1 - Stephen Peneycad Trumpet 2 - Laura Garwin French Horn - Eddie Morgan Trombone - Matt Quick Drum Kit - Kieran Newport Percussion - Adam Cowburn Bass - Alan Coughlan Keyboard - Tim Shaw MD/Piano - Mark Newport The Cast Nic Corden (Caractacus Potts) Nic is once again delighted to be performing with ELODS. He joined the group more than ten years ago, and has enjoyed a few principal roles in that time; Tinman in The Wizard of Oz, Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Emmett in Legally Blonde. Already the “mad inventor” of the group, creating some of the more interesting props, he feels a close affinty with Caractacus. He hopes you enjoy his creations, his performance and the show! Lizzie Droy (Truly Scrumptious) Lizzie is thrilled to be back with ELODS playing the part of Truly Scrumptious. She was last seen in Chicago playing Annie. Other roles include Bombalurina in Cats and Pearl & Dinah in Starlight Express. Lizzie has been a part of performing arts from a very young age and it will always have a place in her heart. She hopes you have a truly brilliant time. Roger Bunnage (Grandpa) This is Roger’s 4th musical with ELODS. After attending Mountview Theatre School he enjoyed 30 years as a professional performer, including 5 sweaty years as Barney The Dinosaur! He also taught Ju-Jitsu (black belt 3rd dan) and would be delighted to put the nasty Baron Bomburst in his place given the chance..

  • Fast Facts and Fun Trivia
Fast Facts and Fun Trivia ● The original book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car, published in 1964 with illustrations by John Burningham, was based on bedtime stories Ian Fleming told to his son, Caspar. ● The original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was first published as three separate books. ● Ian Fleming met Count Louis Zborowski when he was a schoolboy. ● The name and look of the car were taken from a series of racing cars built by Count Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s. ● The book inspired a 1968 movie written by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes, with songs by the Sherman brothers. It was directed by Ken Hughes and produced by Albert R. Broccoli, who was also a producer of the James Bond movies. It starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts and Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious. ● The role of Truly Scrumptious was reportedly offered to Julie Andrews, who had starred alongside Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, but Andrews, apparently feeling that the part was too close to the Poppins mold, declined. ● The movie’s title song was nominated for an Academy Award. ● Six versions of the car were built for the movie, and many replicas have been produced since. The car built for the stage production of the musical holds the record for the most expensive theater prop. ● One of the nondrivable Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars went up for auction in 1973 in Florida and sold for $37,000. The prized drivable model sold for $805,000 in May 2011. ● Ian Fleming owned a Ford Thunderbird, which went very fast but didn’t quite fly.

It is fitting that we should be here at the end of our ninth year, as two of the founder members of the executive, David Bradby and Jacky Bratton spent the larger part of their academic careers in the department and Royal Holloway has played an important role more generally in the work of TaPRA over the years, with staff convening working groups and a large contingent at every conference. TaPRA began at the University of Manchester in 2005. The organization, which had many different names in its first sixth months, came out of both a desire to celebrate our research and a frustration at the divisive nature of the (then) RAE. With a growing impatience at the lack of a national association for specifically UK-based theatre and performance research, the idea was to form an organization that could be membership based and conference lead, could be used by emerging scholars and more established scholars alike, as a place to try out their ideas. The original founders, David Bradby, Jacky Bratton, Maggie B.Gale, Viv Gardner and Baz Kershaw were joined by Maria Delgado, Brian Singleton, Kate Newey, Andy Lavender, Sophie Nield and Paul Allain – as the founding executive.
