Across-affluent Western countries, immigration and integration concerns have been molded into a consensus on the need to instill discipline, but conflict has emerged through public discussions of where discipline is to be applied. Analyzing media content and public documents, I find that in Sweden and in Europe more broadly, as in the United States, some disciplinary political narratives suggest that immigrants themselves are deviant and should be targeted for exclusion from the social rights of citizenship; other narratives hold that immigrants can best beincorporated by using the state to facilitate the expansion of the secondary labor market. It is popularly claimed that the expansion of secondary labor markets promotes economic inclusion, which is held to be the foundation for integration. While this has proven an effective wedge among voters, I probe the validity of this neoliberal claim by reviewing the integration of previous labor immigrants in Sweden through industrial-sector jobs, and by examining immigrant economic IV inclusion and social citizenship in the U.S. I use comparative data on inequality and immigration within the United States and across Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries to assess trends in relationships driving social citizenship politics. In interviews with policy makers and integration officials, and reviewing the labor union confederation literature in Sweden, I find satisfaction with the operation of the Swedish social democratic division oflabor in immigrant policy-setting and integration; as well I find on the national level a lack of concern with the wider, politically-transformative implications ofprominent social citizenship politics.     THE SWEDISH REGIONAL REFORM AND THE POLITICAL MAP: PARTY INTERESTS AT STAKE David Karlsson 1 and Ylva Norén Bretzer 2 First draft for discussion at the XX NorKom conference Göteborg, SVERIGE, November 24 – 26, 2011. Prepared for Group 1 Abstract In this article we conduct contra factual experiment of thoughts, applying the tactics of gerrymandering into the regionalization process of Sweden. By applying the actual election data from 1998 up to 2010, we discuss the various outcomes of four regional models; i) the present system, ii) a realistic scenario of regional reform (a roadmap commissioned by SALAR), and two hypothetical but possible models based on what regional struc- ture would mostly benefit iii) the left parties and iv) the right parties. The overall aim of the paper is to esti- mate the implications of a regional reform on the political geography of Sweden to provide instruments for fu- ture research on if, and how party interests affect the regional reform process. The analyses also give fuel to a number of relevant discussions on regional reform and its political out- comes. For example, our results highlight the possible lock-in effects in the present discussions concerning the Stockholm/Uppsala regions, Västra Götaland and Halland/or Värmland, and the region of Southwest Sweden. One suggestion is that if citizens are to have long-term confidence in the future regional structure, it should be arranged in such a way that both the left and right wings are satisfied – a double-packing strategy. Such a strategy would make it relatively harder for smaller local/regional parties to affect the political stability of a region.

Bohlman) My dissertation analyzes cultural production at the Studio di Fonologia (SdF), an electronic music studio operated by Italian state media network Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) in Milan from 1955 to 1983. At the SdF, composers produced music and sound effects for radio dramas, television documentaries, stage and film operas, and musical works for concert audiences. Much research on the SdF centers on the art-music outputs of a select group of internationally prestigious Italian composers (namely Luciano Berio, Bruno Maderna, and Luigi Nono), offering limited windows into the social life, technological everyday, and collaborative discourse that characterized the institution during its nearly three decades of continuous operation. This preference reflects a larger trend within postwar electronic music histories to emphasize the production of a core group of intellectuals—mostly art-music composers—at a few key sites such as Paris, Cologne, and New York. Through close archival reading, I reconstruct the social conditions of work in the SdF, as well as ways in which changes in its output over time reflected changes in institutional priorities at RAI.

    Kent, Neil. 2008. A Concise History of Sweden. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. xii+300 pages. ISBN: 978-0-521-01227-0. In the introduction to A Concise History of Sweden, Neil Kent correctly asserts that “a comprehensive history of Sweden is much needed” (i). His book is an ambitious attempt to fill a void. To write a general textbook which encompasses the entire history of one of the oldest states in Europe is challenging, as it forces difficult choices regarding what to include and what to omit. A Concise History of Sweden is written for an Anglo-American audience, something apparent in the choice of focus and references. While it is amusing to see the “match king” Ivar Kreuger introduced as the role model for a character in an early play by Ayn Rand, the Anglo-Saxon mould does not always fit. For instance, Kent over-emphasizes Sweden’s admittedly fascinating, but marginal colonial legacy. There are no less than 12 pages with references to Sweden’s miniscule Caribbean colony Saint Barthélemy, a tiny island of 21 km² with a population of a few thousand people and only six Swedish speakers by 1860. Kent’s over-emphasis of this detail comes at the price of overlooking some important events of far greater importance. For instance, there is no mention of the 1676 Battle of Lund, one of the bloodiest battles on Swedish soil in which almost 10,000 men lost their lives, and Swedish control over Skåneland—Scania, Blekinge, and Halland—was reconfirmed. It is difficult to understand why this event, which came to have a profound impact on Swedish history, is omitted from a standard textbook.

Irish responses to Fascist Italy, 1919–1932 by Mark Phelan A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Prof. Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh Department of History School of Humanities National University of Ireland, Galway December 2012 ABSTRACT This project assesses the impact of the first fascist power, its ethos and propaganda, on key constituencies of opinion in the Irish Free State. Accordingly, it explores the attitudes, views and concerns expressed by members of religious organisations; prominent journalists and academics; government officials/supporters and other members of the political class in Ireland, including republican and labour activists. By contextualising the Irish response to Fascist Italy within the wider patterns of cultural, political and ecclesiastical life in the Free State, the project provides original insights into the configuration of ideology and social forces in post-independence Ireland. Structurally, the thesis begins with a two-chapter account of conflicting confessional responses to Italian Fascism, followed by an analysis of diplomatic intercourse between Ireland and Italy. Next, the thesis examines some controversial policies pursued by Cumann na nGaedheal, and assesses their links to similar Fascist initiatives. The penultimate chapter focuses upon the remarkably ambiguous attitude to Mussolini’s Italy demonstrated by early Fianna Fáil, whilst the final section recounts the intensely hostile response of the Irish labour movement, both to the Italian regime, and indeed to Mussolini’s Irish apologists.
