The Advisor The Official Publication of the Neighborhood Association (OSHNA) Published Since 1988 - Our 31st Year “To promote and encourage the preservation and restoration of the area known as Seminole Heights” Annual Circulation 11,000 Fall 2019 www.oldseminoleheights.org From the OSHNA President By Tim Keeports Greetings, Old Seminole Heights! The last few weeks have certainly been interesting to watch. All the back-to-school preparation with a tax-free weekend, the local schools preparing to receive the students, and traffic increasing--the end of summer is here, but not according to the weather. Hopefully, everyone had a terrific summer! OSHNA's Porch Parties, Happy Hours, and community volunteers continued to be vibrant and active throughout the summer. We had a good number of folks come out to assist local American Legion Post 111 update their courtyard with 150 plants donated by Home Depot. We appreciated the large number of Home Depot veterans and current employees who assisted in getting the beds ready, and helped put the myriad of plant varieties in the ground with new soil, weed-blocker fabric, and new mulch. The Legion thanked all the volunteers with hamburgers and drinks. We are looking ahead to the greater Seminole Heights Yard Sale on October 12. Like last year, we will have yard signs for those who sign up in advance. The cost is $5 for OSHNA members. Non-members can join OSHNA and participate in the Yard Sale for $15. We are already getting requests to participate, so start dusting off those treasures and join in our huge annual sale again this year. Just after we conclude the yard sale, the Seminole Heights Sunday Morning Market will begin its next season on October 13th at Hillsborough High School. OSHNA will be staffing our tent with the other local Heights associations, so stop by and say hello, and buy a t-shirt, DVD or neighborhood flag. We love to meet new residents and hear new (and old) stories from those who have been here awhile, while enjoying what the vendors have to offer. Continued on page 3

You’re invited to a fabulous festival to celebrate Tampa’s iconic Tower, November 16th! Local community activists are working, in conjunction with OSHNA and other generous sponsors, to promote and encourage the preservation and restoration the Sulfur Springs Water Tower. A locally famous historic land- mark, the Sulphur Springs Water Tower is more than an architectural feature in our urban core; it is a place that lives in the memories of generations of Tampa residents and visitors. The surrounding River Tower Park beauti- fies the neighborhood and has become a gathering spot for the community to engage with each other and with the natural beauty of our city. The iconic tower has not seen a significant renovation since it was painted 30 years ago. After the City of Tampa purchased the tower they added lights to the base. In addition to restoring the tower, the park needs some love, too. This group was organized to ensure that the tower and park stand vibrantly for generations to come. You’re invited to come help kick off this project at the River Tower Festival. It’s a day of fun, food, music, interac- tive art, dance and of course brews! The event opens at 11:00am and will feature a variety of live music and other entertainment, with something for everyone. The acclaimed Americana group Have Gun Will Travel will head- line the evening. Other favorites include Scapeghost and local favorite Ernie Locke with his new band, yet to be named! Kids are not only welcome but encouraged, particularly during the day. Bring your blankets and chairs but leave the coolers at home. There will be food trucks galore as well as a vendors’ area with all sorts of unique treasures. Every purchase you make will help revitalize the tower and park, so bring all your friends no matter where they live! We want to raise a ton of money so bring your cash and credit cards to support this awesome effort! If you are interested in volunteering, performing, or donating to this effort, please contact preserveourtower@ gmail.com and check out www.preserveourtower.com and the @RiverTowerFest Facebook page.

7 More Murals on Seminole Heights Roadways By Susan Elbare

In the Winter edition, we wrote about our Northeast Seminole Heights Neighborhood Watch Grid 45 receiving the Hillsborough County Office of Neighborhood Relations Grant. We used the grant to create two roadway murals in our Northeast SH area. We also created a plaque to be placed in one of our small pocket parks named for Alan Wright, also known as "Mr. River" because he spent so many years behind the scenes to restore the Hillsborough River. The first mural in front of Alan Wright Park at Crenshaw and Park Circle, was completed on April 27th and the second at Broad Street and Hilton Place, was completed on July 6th.

To complete both murals required a total of 239 volunteer hours. After writing the grant and receiving approval, we started on the design and chose the location. The first design incorporates the logo for the Northeast Neighborhood Watch, the river flowing behind a tree, and a small red bridge and white swirl, known to the area as Hanna's Whirl, was created by graphic artist Angela Forero Moreno. The second mural is more whimsical in nature with some of our animal neighbors, including a kayaking dog, a gator, a manatee, and a water bird.

We then worked with the City of Tampa to get a permit for the project and make arrangements for street closures on the day of the painting. As part of the process, we were required to purchase specific roadway paint from Sherwin Williams. We also had to notify those neighbors living within a few blocks of the location of the mural and get their permission. We have so many in our area with great talents including Nancy Alfredson who scheduled the volunteer work crews for painting day. Tammy Harman Siebel helped feed the volunteers at breakfast and lunch time and Heidi Bissell volunteered to take on the responsibility of the second mural.

None of this could have happened without an artist helping to draw the design on the roadway the day of the painting. Artist Terry Klaaren helped with the first mural and Brent Thorlton assisted with the second. Not only did they draw the outline of the mural on the roadway, they also mixed the paints to provide the custom colors for each mural.

The culmination of the projects, however, were the days spent painting. First, we all did a "sun dance" to get the required weather conditions. We took a note to ourselves to paint murals in cooler weather and not during the rainy season. We worked in shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to give all volunteers a chance to paint including some of the young children in our neighborhood.

To see the murals, drive north on Nebraska and east on Crenshaw until the road comes to a dead end. Relax for a few minutes inside the park and notice the small bridge that was once at Lowry Park, then look to your right to see Hannah's whirl. Then, go back west one block and turn north to the next dead end to see the second mural.

We want to acknowledge and thank those who helped make this possible: Steven Lytle, President Civic Association; Wanda Sloan, Neighborhood Liaison from the Hillsborough County Office of Neighborhood Relations; Gena Torres from Hillsborough County Vision Zero Project; and William Porth, City of Tampa Traffic Safety Coordinator who provided the Manual - Paint the Intersection and helped us get through the Accela process. Thank you to OSHNA for their support and helping pay for the insurance for the project, and a big thank you to those who came to make our neighborhood roadways become beautiful works of art! If you have a group interested in creating a mural in your area, please contact Susan Elbare at [email protected].

She loves the color and display, and often restores quaint, vintage garden items to include in the garden or to sell.

When you walk through this garden you can find statuary, metal arches and benches galore. You find mirrors that reflect the blooming vegetation and growth all around, and pathways of old Tampa asphalt brick. There are bird baths, a bird feeding area, bird cages filled with annuals, milk weed and pipe vine for butterflies; these grow together with fall annuals such as chrysanthemums, marigolds and astors. You see Florida native plants such as berry bush, and a flamboyant Mimosa tree that the honeybees love for dinner. A sunflower porch brightens your day.

The garden creates vignettes of cozy little rooms infused with color as well as whimsy: headboards as fencing and décor, fun fall decorations, various rusty elements such as a baby crib loaded with metal garden art and signage. Visible from the street are vintage plates that line the curb and a decorated picket fence. Everywhere you look in this garden, there are funs things to catch your eye and please your senses.
