Ethnobiol. 3(2):139-147 December 1983 RICHARD SPRUCE: AN EARLY ETHNOBOTANIST AND EXPLORER OF THE NORTHWEST AMAZON AND NORTHERN ANDES RICHARD EVANS SCHULTES Jeffrey Professor of Biology and Director, Botanical Museum of Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 ABSTRACT.-Although Richard Spruce, a pioneer botanical explorer of the northwest Amazon and the northern Andes in the middle of the last century, made numerous impor tant ethnobotanical discoveries, he missed the opportunity of delving deeply into the ethno pharmacological lore of the area. Part of this deficiency was due not certainly to his scien tific curiosity but to his inability to associate closely with unacculturated natives, the incredible intensity of his floristic and taxonomic studies, and possibly to his illness. Yet his research set the stage for recent ethnobotanical investigations of this very species-rich region. INTRODUCTION The Indians of the northwest Amazon, especially those of the Brazilian and Colom bian region of the Rfo Vaupes, have a rich ethnopharmacological lore. This wealth of knowledge of the presumed medicinal properties of plants, however, is just coming to the fore-and most certainly not too soon with its disappearance in the face of advancing acculturation and the inroads of civilization. Richard Spruce (Fig. I), the British plant-explorer who opened up this region to science between 1851 and 1854, must be counted amongst the greatest naturalists ever to have engaged in collecting and studies anywhere in virgin tropical American territories. As a result of his meticulous observation and insatiable curiosity, a basis for our under standing of great areas of the Amazon Valley and of the northern Andes was early and most firmly laid. -

Its propagation is mainly by seeds, but basic subsidies regarding the requirements for optimal germination conditions are still lacking. Aiming to contribute to the expansion of its cultivation, rational use and conservation, the objective of this study was to investigate the morphology and anatomy of fruits and seeds, as well as the responses to factors as thermal regimes and substrates in seed germination. The 1000-seed weight and seeds per fruit were determined. To characterize the seed tissues, histochemical test with Sudan III and Lugol was used. The temperatures analyzed in the germination test were 15-25 °C; 25 °C; 20-30 °C and 30 °C. -

ABSTRACT Anadenanthera (Fabaceae) is endemic to the Neotropics and consists of two tree species: A. colubrina (Vell.) Brenan and A. peregrina (L.) Speg. This study examined the mating system and contemporary gene flow of A. colubrina (Acol) and A. peregrina (Aper) in a highly fragmented area of the Atlantic Forest to provide valuable information that informs conservation strategies. Reproductive adults from forest remnants [nA. colubrina = 30 (2.7 ha), nA. peregrina = 55 (4.0 ha)] and progeny-arrays (nA. colubrina = 322, nA. peregrina = 300) were genotyped for seven nuclear microsatellite markers. Mating system analyses revealed that A. colubrina is a mixed mating species (tm = 0.619) while A. peregrina is a predominantly outcrossing species (tm = 0.905). For both Anadenanthera species, high indices of biparental inbreeding were observed (Acol = 0.159, Aper = 0.216), resulting in low effective pollination neighborhood sizes. Antiquity of the Use of New World Hallucinogens Richard Evans Schultes, Ph.D., F.M.L.S “In the exudates and decoctions from trees and herbs, man has found principles that have permitted him to experience a kinship with the whole of creation.” -- William Emboden (1979) Abstract: A review of psychoactive plants known from archaeological contexts and artistic representations shows that their use has spanned centuries, continuing in places in Mexico and South America to the present day. The discovery of the unusual properties of these plants took place as part of the exploration of the physical milieu of the Western Hemisphere. That these plants must in some cases be made into infusions in order to be consumed reveals ancient enterprise in manipulating aspects of the environment. The surprising results obtained from treating psychoactive plants allowed their users to communicate more directly with the unseen world which they believed to exist. It was the great German toxicologist Louis Lewin (1931) who wrote that "from the beginning of our knowledge of man, we find him consuming substances of no nutritive value, but taken for the sole purpose of producing for a certain time a feeling of contentment, ease and comfort." There is ample material proof that narcotics and other psychoactive plants, such as hallucinogens, were employed in many cultures in both hemispheres thousands of years ago. The material proof exists in some archaeological specimens of the plants in contexts indicating magico-religious use and in art forms such as paintings, rock carvings, golden amulets, ceramic artifacts, stone figurines, and monuments. -

ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY The Psychedelic Renaissance and Its Forensic Implications Brian Holoyda, MD, MPH, MBA Recent years have seen a renaissance of research into the use of psychedelic compounds to address various psychiatric conditions. The study of these substances went dormant in 1970 when the United States government passed the Controlled Substances Act, which categorized lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD or acid, as a Schedule I drug. The rise of psychedelics in research settings raises questions regarding their risks outside of clinical trials. The available data on the impact of psychedelic use on interpersonal violence and other criminal behavior remain scant. Although Timothy Leary’s work of the 1960s failed to clearly demonstrate a reduction in criminal recidivism with psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, recent studies suggest that the use of psychedelics may reduce individuals’ risk of interpersonal violence. Forensic psychiatrists should be aware of this research, as well as the role that psychedelics may play in various forensic assessments. This article summarizes basic information that the forensic practitioner should know about psychedelic substances, including their various effects and proposed mechanism of action; describes historical and recent research into psychedelics and criminal behavior; and offers evaluators a practical means by which to assess individuals’ psychedelic use in forensic contexts.
