WMATA was established in 1967 as an interstate compact agency, with Metrobus service starting in 1973 and Metrorail operations starting in 1976. Over the past 30 years, Metrobus and Metrorail, along with local bus and commuter rail services, have met the diverse mobility needs of a growing population and supported economic development of the metropolitan region. In FY 2008, WMATA carried 348 million passenger trips, 215 million trips on Metrorail and 133 million trips on Metrobus. The report is organized into three sections, as follows: “Historical Ridership ”, “Existing
