Antonio Rodríguez Babiloni Biografía: Philip. K. Dick (1928-1982) Nació prematuramente, junto a su hermana gemela Jane, el 2 de marzo 1928, en Chicago. Jane murió trágicamente pocas semanas después. La influencia de la muerte de Jane fue una parte dominante de la vida y obra de Philp K. Dick. El biógrafo Lawrence Sutin escribe; ...El trauma de la muerte de Jane quedó como el suceso central de la vida psíquica de Phil Dos años más tarde los padres de Dick, Dorothy Grant y Joseph Edgar Dick se mudaron a Berkeley. A esas alturas el matrimonio estaba prácticamente roto y el divorcio llegó en 1932, Dick se quedó con su madre, con la que se trasladó a Washington. En 1940 volvieron a Berkeley. Fue durante este período cuando Dick comenzó a leer y escribir ciencia ficción. En su adolescencia, publicó regularmente historias cortas en el Club de Autores Jovenes, una columna el Berkeley Gazette. Devoraba todas las revistas de ciencia-ficción que llegaban a sus manos y muy pronto empezó a ser influido por autores como Heinlein y Van Vogt.

In doing so it makes use of, and mobilises, the concept of estrangement or ‘making’ strange put forward by Victor Shklovsky and the Russian Formalists (amongst others). It does this at two levels: first, by examining the genres of speculative fiction as genres of estrangement that ‘make strange’ their representations of law, legality and justice; and second, by proposing a mode and methodology of cultural legal reading as one that itself ‘makes strange’, rendering the texts under analysis otherwise. As such, it sees in the stories told within the genres of speculative fiction not simply flights of fancy or postulates of pure imagination with no relation or reference to reality. Rather, they produce a meditation on and mediation of the world itself—one that opens us to see the world both in its createdness and contingency, as storied and imbued with meaning.

Dick made himself one of the major characters in this story of an alternate past reality in which Richard F. Fremont, a Nixon-like President has managed to cling to power into a fifth term of office while hunting down a shadowy terrorist organization. Nick Brady, a record store clerk in Berkeley, begins to receive messages and visions from a mysterious and God-like source from the star system Albemuth, that he dubs VALIS – for Vast Active Living Intelligent System. When offered a high-paying music industry job, Nick, along with his wife Rachel and best friend, Philip K. Dick, a science fiction writer, move down to Los Angeles and find themselves drawn into an extraterrestrial plot to bring down Fremont’s totalitarian regime with the subliminal power of music. Though fictional, the story was inspired by Philip K. Dick’s own actual visionary experiences and possible contact with what he believed might be a higher extra-terrestrial intelligence. Michael likes my new novel VALIS, but learned that Ursual LeGuin has been tremendously upset by it, "not only for its examination of perhaps unresolved metaphysical matters (into which she seems to fear you are plunging at the risk of never returning again) but for its treatment of female characters -- every one of which, she argued, was at bottom (I cannot remember her exact phrase) a hateful and not-to-be-trusted death figure…that evening, after her talk at Emory University, while questions were being asked, she responded that her reading of science fiction these days is rather selective but that she has the utmost admiration for the work of Philip K. Dick, who has been shamefully ignored critically in this country and who appears to be spirally into himself and slowly going crazy in Santa Ana, California". Her dismay, Michael says, "Results not solely from anger but from a genuine human concern about your intellectual and emotional well-being". It is probably self-defeating for me to assert timidly that, "Don't worry, Ursula, I'm not slowly going crazy in Santa Ana, California", but I will make a feeble attempt to confront this outpouring of genuine human concern. Ursula, VALIS is a picaresque novel (the first- person viewpoint, the wandering about of the protagonist, the very name he has: Horselover Fat, which is on the order of Smollett's Peregrine Pickle, the fact that the protagonist is decidedly an outsider, the style of the novel, which is vernacular English, not formal -- but I digress).

However, one person said that the increase was due to a lot of students who got in for a student rate and then spent all their time in gaming or anime. The hope is that next year they may t ry out other parts of the convention, but I'm skeptical. As is becoming all too common, our hotel room was not ready when we arrived about 4PM.
