Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.

    Red Baraat Bio “We feel comfortable not knowing exactly where we’re headed,” says Red Baraat’s founder and bandleader Sunny Jain. “We’re very much about trying things out and taking risks. Sometimes it doesn’t work,” he laughs, “and sometimes we stumble upon things that are really exciting.” Landing squarely in the latter category is Gaadi of Truth, the third and latest full- length studio effort from the New York dhol and brass ensemble. While still retaining many of the propulsive and uplifting musical elements that fired their first two albums, 2010’s Chaal Baby and 2012’s Shruggy Ji — and which led NPR to famously dub Red Baraat “The best party band in years” — Gaadi of Truth is an even deeper affair, both instrumentally and conceptually. “When we originally started in 2008, the group was going to be rooted in Punjabi music,” Jain explains. Born and raised in Rochester, NY as a first generation Indian American, Jain drew upon his early musical education for the concept of Red Baraat. “I grew up hearing Indian classical music and devotional songs at home,” he recalls, “and my dad was always listening to 1960s Bollywood music on reel to reel. For Red Baraat, I really wanted a large band with a massive sound, but just drums and horns. The horns were really looking back at the brass band tradition of India, which was something I’d grown up with and seen since I was five years old. I wanted to put the dhol drum in front — the dhol is the dance drum of northern India, which you also hear in the film music of Bollywood — and fuse it with the Punjabi rhythms and the Indian brass band tradition.

    The music of India includes multiple varieties of folk, popular, pop, classical music andR&B. India's classical music tradition, including Carnatic and Hindustani music, has a history spanning millennia and developed over several eras. Music in India began as an integral part of socio-religious life and that Indian music is essentially melodic: sounds follow one another expressing an emotional state in an aesthetic unity.[1] Two main traditions of classical music are Carnatic music, found predominantly in the peninsular regions, and Hindustani music, found in the northern and central regions.[2] The basic concepts of this music includes Shruti, Swara, Alankar, Rāga, and Tāla. Its tonal system divides the octave into 22 segments called shrutis, not all equal but each roughly equal to one quarter of a whole tone of Western music. Melody is based on the system of ragas, which are melody types used as the basis for improvisation. Hindustani music[edit] Main article: Hindustani classical music Hindustani music tradition was developed around 13th and 14th centuries AD with Persian influences and from existing religious and folk music.[3] The practice of singing based on notes was popular even from the Vedic times where the hymns in Sama Veda, a sacred text, were sung as Samagana and not chanted. Developing a strong and diverse tradition over several centuries, it has contemporary traditions established primarily in India but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In contrast to Carnatic music, the other main Indian classical music tradition originating from the South, Hindustani music was not only influenced by ancient Hindu musical traditions, historical Vedic philosophy and native Indian sounds but also enriched by the Persian performance practices of the Mughals.

Gracin Liberty University The riches of India’s ancient and diverse culture are proclaimed from the music that communicates the heart of Bharat Mata – Mother India. This sentiment resounds across the vast geographical area of India in songs from Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians and Bollywood composers. The question of how Christians might express their faith in light of societal, historical and religious amalgamations is the topic of discussion for this project. The inquiry will focus on the music culture of North India, specifically as it is expressed in the city of B_____, Uttar Pradesh. A six week field study was conducted in India to interview Hindu musicians and non-musicians. Audio and video recordings were made of the interviews, and photographs and recordings were made of various performances. The show takes audiences on a celebratory journey through the Bollywood film industry and Indian culture with a stunning visual display that fuses dance, theater, and spectacular effects. What is Bollywood? Bollywood refers to films produced by the Mumbai film industry, primarily in the Hindi language, distributed across the normal commercial film circuits of northern India. Containing song and dance numbers as an integral part of the plot, Bollywood stretches as far back as film industries of the rest of the world. Bollywood began around the same time as Hollywood, with the first Indian movie (Raja Harishchandra) completed in 1913. The films grew in regional popularity through the sound era of the thirties and forties - difficult years for India that featured much political unrest. Bollywood movies were (and continue to be) primarily escapist, "universally" appealing films; the early Bollywood era, however, featured a more frank and risqué adult content. These pioneering films also occasionally featured political and social commentary. The definitive shift toward a more homogenized, family-oriented cinema came, paradoxically, with the end of British rule in India. The post-British period also established several additional conventions that became near- universal in Bombay cinema: the dominance of the musical form (almost all Bollywood movies are musicals with catchy songs designed to sell pop records as well as movie tickets); long length (most Bollywood films last three hours and feature an intermission, a concession to the feeling among moviegoers that a film ought to give one one's "money's worth" or "paisa vasool"); and reliance on comforting, conventional plot twists (the star-crossed lovers, the scheming politician, the courageous youth, the hooker with a heart of gold).

She wrote her thesis on a comparison of Gandhi and Mao and maintains a keen interest in current de- velopments in India, China, and Southeast Asia. Cur- rently based in Singapore, she conducts research and writes on popular Hindi film, as well as radio broad- casting in India. Her articles on films include topics such as terrorism, in-film advertising, and marriage and fam- ily. In addition to her work on film, Kripalani has de- veloped a series of four Hindi books for preschool children, and bilingual editions were published in 2007 by the Global Indian Foundation (Singapore).
