With a voice from heaven and biting and illustrative lyrics, Tracey never disappoints. Two years ago Tracey struck out on her own for the first time in 25 years with Out “So. Never trust a man with two of the Woods, an electronic masterpiece right in line with— but completely unique from—the last first names. Even if he’s, like... few Everything But the Girl albums. Logic would a teacher. Especially if he’s Mr. dictate that Tracey Thomas.” would continue on the dance/electro path with her follow up, Love and Its Opposite (Merge, 5/18/10), but she’s taken her biggest turn since going electric with EBTG’s Walking Wounded in 1996. With Love, she again collaborates with producer Ewan Pearson (remixer for Depeche, Goldfrapp, and Ladytron), who knows his dance. With the exception the late disco sound of Why Does the Wind, she seems to be getting “Well, the good news is... I back to a more stripped down, meaningful sound. totally passed 8th grade algebra. She’s tackling very grown-up-lady issues on such Like, yay.” tracks as the lead single, “Oh, The Divorces!,” “Singles Bar” (aging divorcee’s lament), or “Hormones,” a downright poppy handoff from a mom to her tween daughter. Also surprising is her embracing of co-vocalists. In the past, the only voice present was her husband Ben back in the day, but she’s not really taken on guests until now, with haunting tracks like “C’mon Home To Me” with Jens Lekman and the uplifting final track “Swimming” with the delicate Cortney Tidwell. Both cuts show Tracey’s voice, while always rising above any other living vocalist in range and uniqueness; she plays very well with and compliments others. As said to a parent friend of mine the other day, “But the bad news is, like, herpes “growing up is all about learning to play well with is incurable. And totally annoying.” others” and my little “Marine Girl” has certainly done that on her best release to date. Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science Abstract The proliferation of cultural objects, such as music, books, film and websites, has created a new problem: How do consumers determine the value of cultural objects in an age of information glut? Crowd-sourcing – paralleling word-of-mouth recommendations – has taken center stage, yet expert opinion has also assumed renewed importance. Prior work on the valuation of artworks and other cultural artifacts identifies ways critics establish and maintain classificatory boundaries, such as genre. We extend this research by offering a theoretical approach emphasizing the dynamics of critics’ valuation and classification. Empirically, this analysis turns to Pitchfork.com, an influential music review website, to examine the relationship between classification and valuation. Using topic models of fourteen years of Pitchfork.com album reviews (n=14,495), we model the dynamics of valuation through genre and additional factors predictive of positive reviews and cultural consecration. We use gold record awards to study the relationship between valuation processes and commercial outcomes.

Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who perform as “Gillian Welch”) and their 2011 album The Harrow & the Harvest are analyzed vis-à-vis the ways in which their musical and visual invocations of the rural past dialogue with a psychic landscape of collective memory. iii Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to study in the Music and Culture program at Carleton and the privilege of working alongside such dedicated scholars, professors and fellow students alike. I want to especially thank my supervisor, Dr.
