I'm well into it and read it every chance I can on my short ride to work.If you want to know more about what goes on in not only Tracey's head as a singer, but other famous singers and see the similarities and differences in approach, then "Naked At The Albert Hall" should be in your hands or on your Kindle.Even long before you are finished you'll understand how to make a song "Scritti", you'll appreciate Tracey's influences as well as learn who were some of the popular influences in recent decades that were not so easily detectable.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. essentialBy K. WareIf you sing, or love singing, read this. It's cliche to say it's "life changing" (and ok, perhaps that's extreme), but as someone who will soon be singing in front of a LOT of people, I'm so glad this book exists. In her bestselling autobiography Bedsit Disco Queen, Tracey Thorn recalled the highs and lows of a thirty-year career in pop music. But with the touring, recording and extraordinary anecdotes, there wasn't time for an in-depth look at what she actually did for all those years: sing. She sang with warmth and emotional honesty, sometimes while battling acute stage-fright.Part memoir, part wide-ranging exploration of the art, mechanics and spellbinding power of singing, NAKED AT THE ALBERT HALL takes in Dusty Springfield, Dennis Potter and George Eliot; Auto-tune, the microphone and stage presence; The Streets and The X Factor. Including interviews with fellow artists such as Alison Moyet, Romy Madley-Croft and Green Gartside of Scritti Politti, and portraits of singers in fiction as well as Tracey's real-life experiences, it offers a unique, witty and sharply observed insider's perspective on the exhilarating joy and occasional heartache of singing. Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science Abstract The proliferation of cultural objects, such as music, books, film and websites, has created a new problem: How do consumers determine the value of cultural objects in an age of information glut? Crowd-sourcing – paralleling word-of-mouth recommendations – has taken center stage, yet expert opinion has also assumed renewed importance. Prior work on the valuation of artworks and other cultural artifacts identifies ways critics establish and maintain classificatory boundaries, such as genre. We extend this research by offering a theoretical approach emphasizing the dynamics of critics’ valuation and classification. Empirically, this analysis turns to Pitchfork.com, an influential music review website, to examine the relationship between classification and valuation. Using topic models of fourteen years of Pitchfork.com album reviews (n=14,495), we model the dynamics of valuation through genre and additional factors predictive of positive reviews and cultural consecration. We use gold record awards to study the relationship between valuation processes and commercial outcomes.

Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who perform as “Gillian Welch”) and their 2011 album The Harrow & the Harvest are analyzed vis-à-vis the ways in which their musical and visual invocations of the rural past dialogue with a psychic landscape of collective memory. iii Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to study in the Music and Culture program at Carleton and the privilege of working alongside such dedicated scholars, professors and fellow students alike. I want to especially thank my supervisor, Dr.

  • Thesis an Indie Hype Cycle Built for Two: a Case Study
THESIS AN INDIE HYPE CYCLE BUILT FOR TWO: A CASE STUDY OF THE PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEWS OF ARCADE FIRE AND CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH Submitted by Samuel R. Ernst Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Jonathan Lupo David Scott Diffrient Deborah Thompson ABSTRACT AN INDIE HYPE CYCLE BUILT FOR TWO: A CASE STUDY OF THE PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEWS OF ARCADE FIRE AND CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH This thesis investigates the whims of critical reception in the indie rock world and its effects upon the hype cycle. I define the indie hype cycle as a naturalized communicative process governing the flow of critical favor within the indie music community and identify its four primary phases as entrance on to the scene, hype generation, backlash, and obscurity/visibility. To understand the interaction between the hype cycle and critical reception, the project focuses on Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) as two bands emblematic of the critical divergence possible after initial success. It compares the reviews of the bands’ debut and sophomore albums by Pitchfork, a prominent indie music website, and identifies genre, elitism, and authenticity as key constructs in the way the site frames the bands as indie, and thus, worthy of praise. I argue that an economy of authenticity—featuring emotional, economic, and talent- based forms—affects the indie hype cycle in a variety of ways. The thesis concludes that the mechanics of indie music criticism have extensive influence upon the indie hype cycle.

  • A Qualitative Inquiry Into How Romantic Love Has Been
A QUALITATIVE INQUIRY INTO HOW ROMANTIC LOVE HAS BEEN PORTRAYED BY CONTEMPORARY MEDIA AND RESEARCHERS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Stephanie A. Griffin, M.S. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Jerelyn Schultz, Advisor Assistant Professor Christine Price ________________________ Advisor Associate Professor James Upton College of Human Ecology Copyright by Stephanie A. Griffin 2006 ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Romantic love is a hallmark of human beings. Traditionally, love research has focused on terminology, childhood antecedents, or love style subcomponents; however, there has been little research exploring where attitudes about romantic love develop. This study explored contemporary entertainment media for love imagery. The media patterns were then compared with the research view of love to identify possible sociocultural patterns of romantic love. METHODS Award-winning films, music, and television series with romantic plots from four time periods were selected and evaluated qualitatively. Using a constant comparison method, romantic themes were identified. Each romantic relationship was further evaluated using the criteria of the Love Attitudes Scale and the Triangular Love Scale. Media from each era were holistically evaluated before moving to the next time period. This allowed for a deeper immersion into each era’s historical context. RESULTS Two sets of media archetypes
