Carlton Hall was the home of the Garrett Family famous for Richard Garrett’s engineering works at Leiston which provided engines and iron components across the British Empire during the 19th and early part of the 20th Century. The property which was redeveloped approximately ten years ago is surrounded by 22 acres of protected wood- land and countryside with views over Carlton Church. The Coach House which was rebuilt as a smart detached residence, is a property with two facades, the south front overlooking a delightful walled courtyard while the red brick north front overlooks the private landscaped garden which abuts light protected woodland beyond. There are views of Carlton Park from the property with wonderful walks and a ten minute into Saxmundham town centre. The accommodation is centrally heated by gas-fired radiators with double glazing and features three well proportioned bedrooms with two superbly appointed and good sized bathrooms on the first floor. There is a ground floor cloak- room and two elegant reception rooms, the larger of which has a fireplace with wood burning stove and a full length arched window which open out on to the central courtyard. The kitchen/dining room is a notable feature of the property being beautifully appointed with integrated appliances and benefiting from a useful and separate utility room. The property has been attractively decorated with neutral tones, polished slate floors and is extremely well presented for sale. The rear garden is a notable feature affording a high degree of privacy and seclusion with a wealth of established shrubs, clipped Lonicera hedging, a wild garden area and lawn. There is a double garage in a nearby block and residents have a right to enjoy the surrounding parkland and communal areas, including the cen- tral courtyard. Saxmundham is a lovely Suffolk market town which has a railway station providing direct and connecting services to London Liverpool Street station. There are an excellent range of local shops including a fine Waitrose supermarket, local galleries and restaurants. The attractions of the Suffolk Heritage Coast lies within convenient reach by car and include the seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold. The world famous Snape Malt- ings Concert Hall lies within convenient reach by car and is home to the internationally renowned Aldeburgh Festival. There are golf courses at Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Halesworth, sailing on the rivers Deben and Alde with ancient castles to explore at Orford and Framlingham. There are some wonderful woodland walks at Tunstall Forest and Blaxhall Common with walks along the Alde estuary at Iken Cliffs. This area benefits from some of East Anglia’s best nature reserves notably at Minsmere, Havergate Island and North Warren. Carlton Park lies approximately a mile from Saxmundham. Carlton has a primary school and a pub: The Poacher’s Pocket. Saxmundham has excellent local shops including Waitrose and Tesco supermarkets. The railway station provides connecting services to London, Cambridge and Norwich and the town has its own restaurants and galleries. I am writing on behalf of the Suffolk Local Access Forum (SLAF). Local access forums are statutorily prescribed bodies, introduced by s94 and s95 of the Countryside and Rights of Way (CROW) Act 2000. Their main function is to advise their appointing authority as to the improvement of public access to land in that area for the purposes of open-air recreation and the enjoyment of the area. Local access forums comprise appointed members who represent both users of local rights of way or access land and owners and occupiers of access land or land encompassing local rights of way. SLAF understand that the Panel has recently opened its doors for views on forests and woods and announced forest visits. The forum further understands that following your second meeting, you have announced initial visits to the Forest of Dean, Northumberland and Kent. The Suffolk Local Access Forum wishes to convey its views to the panel on the future of the public forest estate (PFE) in Suffolk, in particular on the future of public access for all those groups currently enjoying access in the county’s woodland and forest, whether by right, permission or de facto.

BR. J. ENT. NAT. HIST., 29: 2016 197 HEDYCHRUM NOBILE (SCOPOLI): A JEWEL-WASP NEW TO BRITAIN AND DISTINCT FROM H. NIEMELAI LINSENMAIER (HYMENOPTERA: CHRYSIDIDAE) 1 2 D. W. BALDOCK &R.D.HAWKINS 1Nightingales, Haslemere Road, Milford, Godalming, Surrey GU8 5BN [email protected] 230D Meadowcroft Close, Horley, Surrey RH6 9EL [email protected] ABSTRACT The separation of Hedychrum nobile (Scopoli) into two distinct species, H. nobile s.s. and H. niemelai Linsenmaier, is provisionally accepted and characters distinguishing the two species are given. Hedychrum niemelai is a long-term resident of Britain while H. nobile is a recent arrival that has spread rapidly since its first record from Surrey in 1998. Distributional data and field observations suggest that the preferred host of H. nobile is Cerceris arenaria (L.) and that the hosts of H. niemelai are C. quinquefasciata (Rossi) and C. ruficornis (F.). HISTORY IN EUROPE In the late 1940’s the Dutch entomologist P. M. F. Verhoeff was working on the genus Hedychrum in order to make a clear separation of the three species, H. gerstaeckeri Chevrier, H. rutilans Dahlbom and H. nobile (Scopoli), that were present in the Netherlands. Little attention had previously been paid to the the genitalia of Chrysididae but he dissected males and was surprised to find two distinct forms of the genitalia of H. nobile. He then received a letter from a Finnish entomologist, P. Niemela¨ , who had made the same discovery, and then a further letter in which Niemela¨ reported finding two corresponding forms of the female based on a single small but significant underside character.
