The fact that the book is in front of you at all, is for a large part thanks to others. Harry van der Hulst backed me up at a moment when the whole project appeared to fail. He discussed my plans with me and supported me in every possible way. When he left for the U.S.A. I was lucky to have Marc van Oostendorp as my supervisor. It is impossible to express my gratefulness towards him. Not only did he teach me a lot about phonology, he did it in such a way that after our discussions I would feel excited and enthusiastic – even if, at the beginning of our meeting, I would be in all states of gloom. I am still amazed that he never gave up on me and I will miss our discussions and laughs. Hans Bennis allowed me to work at the Meertens Instituut, when I was officially no longer employed by the institute and I am grateful for that. Thanks also to all my other colleagues at the Meertens Instiuut. I am not going to mention anyone specifically because they are with too many. However, a special word of thanks is due for the colleagues with whom I shared an office and who gracefully supported my endless chewing of liquorice or carrots – depending on my mood. The last two years, I was so busy that I hardly ever took the time to travel to Leiden. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the phonology meetings before that period and I am grateful for the help I got from the Leiden phonologists. A special ‘thank you’ is for Jeroen van de Weijer for reading my work and giving useful suggestions. Of course, I want to thank my children Jurrien and Sebastiaan and my partner, Martin. Maybe, at last we will have a quiet life at the Richard Wagnerstraat – now that ‘mama’s book’ is finally written. Thanks also to my friends and relatives for supporting my complaints. When I studied African Linguistics in Leiden, I discovered my interest in linguistics. This interest has not left me since and I thank the members of that department for their role in it. I regret that my parents are not with us anymore. They both would have been happy for me – maybe most of all my father, who always wanted to write his Ph.D. but who was so busy with this family, his work and politics that he never got round to doing it. I dedicate this book to him..
