Soundtrack for a New Jerusalem Lyrics and Music By Lily Meadow Foster and Toliver Myers EDITED by Peter Daniel The 70th Anniversary of the National Health Service 1 Jerusalem 1916 England does not have a national anthem, however unofficially the beautiful Jerusalem hymn is seen as such by many English people. Jerusalem was originally written as a preface poem by William Blake to his work on Milton written in 1804, the lyrics were added to music written by Hubert Parry in 1916 during the gloom of WWI when an uplifting new English hymn was well received and needed. Blake was in- spired by the mythical story Jesus, accompanied by Joseph of Arimathea, once came to England. This developed its major theme that of creating a heaven on earth in En- galnd, a fairer more equal country that would abolish the exploitation of working people that was seen in the ‘dark Satin mills’ of the Industrial revolution. The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection a Handlist
The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection is a closed access collection. Please ask at the enquiry desk if you would like to use it. Please note that all items are reference only and in most cases it is necessary to obtain permission from the relevant copyright holder before they can be photocopied. We begin with Songs from the Operas and this includes ten songs from Hugh the Drover, arranged by the composer for voice and piano. These are world premiere recordings in this arrangement and are all quite lo vely. Our second CD covers the CHAIRMAN Early Years and includes man y songs ne ver previously recorded. When John Bishop (still much missed), Robin Barber and I (Stephen Connock) came together to form the Society our aim was to widen from page 4 appreciation of RVW’s music, particularly through recordings of neglected but high quality music. Looking back, we feel proud of what we have achieved. Our work on The Poisoned Kiss represents a special contribution as we worked closely with Ursula Vaughan Williams on shaping the libretto for the recording. And what beautiful music there is! Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley. -

Teacher Guide Johnson City Symphony Orchestra Dr. Robert Seebacher, music director Wednesday, September 16, 2015 Seeger Chapel, Milligan College Our educational concert this season has the theme “The Orchestra Olympics.” For each piece that we play, students will be asked to determine a “winner” based on their understanding of musical elements (tempo, dynamics, etc.) and instruments. As you prepare your students, you might want to focus on these components. Students from East Tennessee State University’s Department of Music will come to visit your class (based on schedule and availability) to talk about the music and prepare them for the concert. Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 ........................... Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Edward Elgar was an English composer who wrote music for instruments and for voices. One of the things he is famous for is the fact that he recorded much of his music for the then-new gramophone, or record player. That means that we have recordings of his music being played exactly the way that he intended it. You can show your students a working gramophone at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz7_UBv9NKo. Elgar wrote five Pomp and Circumstance marches. The title comes from William Shakespeare’s Othello: “Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war!” Because they are British military marches, the tempo is a bit slower than what you think of when you imagine an American march, like The Stars and Stripes Forever (which will be played later in the program). -
