THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERETTAS ON 78s: COMPLETE SETS AND ABRIDGEMENTS, 1906. 1950 John W. N. Francis In 1877 Richard D'Oyly Carte commissioned Gilbert and Sullivan to write The Sorcerer, and organized an ensemble of singer-actors to perform the new piece under the author's artistic direction. Also in 1877, of course, Charles Cros and Thomas Edison invented sound recording. More than a century later both the music and the medium continue to flourish, and indeed they have come together often and success fully--notably in the many complete versions by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which have set standards of style and ensemble for generations of devotees and amateur performers. This discography documents the complete recordings of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas made at 78 rpm, not only by the D'Oyly Carte company or under its aegis, but also by others with lesser claims to authenticity. Also included are substantial abridgements and sets of excerpts--groups of five or more sides made at essentially the same time and place and with the same performers, whether or not they were ever issued collectively or with consecutive numbering. The following comments set the recordings in the context of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's history. THE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS When Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901, his widow Helen assumed manage ment of the businesses he had built, including the Savoy Theatre in London and the opera company, which was then on tour. In 1906 she brought the troupe back to the Savoy for a repertory season of Gilbert and Sullivan, its very first. -

Members are delighted with the tit bits of news items of George and the Branch Meetings and I am looking forward to receiving as much information from as possible. Just Received news on the grapevine that Anthony Mason was playing on Llandudno Pier last Saturday afternoon and a young boy stood in the audience wearing a large badge and singing along to all George's songs. Low and behold it was our Ashley, who was chosen as our N.West Celebrity Of The Year at Warrington. Our Ceb is getting everywhere! Now it must have been a bad day for Anthony as, now and again, he would forget the next line. As Anthony said "It's a bit daunting as one gust of wind and I'm off the end of the pier." So he was pleased when he saw Ashley and he invited him to sing with him on the stage. G-R-E-A-T - Ashley knew all the words and everybody loved it. They gave Ashley thunderous applause. Justice Michael Kirby, CMG President of the Court of Appeal • Patron of the Australian Opera Auditions Committeecommittee AN AUSTRALIAN INSPIRATION To put it quite simply, Joan Hammond is an inspiration to my generation of music lovers in Australia. She burst upon the scene just before the second World War. She reached the zenith of her popularity in the late 1940's1940'S and 1950's. Her career as a top artist was prematurely cut short for health reasons. But it had coincided with the development of recording technology which took her strong, clear voice and superb diction, to thousands of her fellow Australians, and millions more. Because she was Australian, she captured the imagination of people, some- of whom might not otherwise have found the key into the marvellous world of classical music. She helped break down the stereotype of the Australian - as a mindless beer swilling, ocker talking footy fan. For me, she was nothing less than the inspiration that kindled my love of music, and especially song. That is why I am delighted to take part in this musical tribute to her. f She has written, on a number of occasions, of the personal reserve and anxiety which publiC scrutiny of her I personality causes her. l This anxiety is quite separate from r (, r (., f l l the "nerves" which afflict most artists and frequently add an edge to the quality of their performance. -

Summer Entertainment on the Isle of Man The Joe Loss Years Part 1: 1946-50 ‘Let the good times roll again’ by Maurice Powell ‘It was a golden period. The mix of reliable old, brilliant new, up and comers, down and outers, has beens, never was-ers and some of the most eccentric acts ever seen . .’* The world of entertainment slowly began to regain some of its pre-war vitality during the immediate austere post-war years. In 1947 the Crazy Gang returned to the London stage with Together Again, and in 1949 Billy Cotton and Tessie O’Shea appeared together in their touring show Tess and Bill. Radio reached the height of its popularity and influence* and two years later Billy Cotton launched the Billy Cotton Band Show, which cemented his enormous reputation, and with his signature tune Somebody Stole My Gal and raucous call of ‘Wakey, Wakey!’ the show became the backdrop to Sunday lunchtimes throughout Britain. In 1948 Frank Muir and Dennis Norden’s Take It From Here was soon attracting enormous radio audiences, mainly due to the weekly saga of the Glum family, starring ‘Professor’ Jimmy Edwards, Dick Bentley and June Whitfield. Ray’s a Laugh with Ted Ray replaced ITMA after the death of Tommy Handley in 1949, and Educating Archie, Peter Brough’s bizarre radio ventriloquist show, began a decade-long run the following year and helped launch the careers of some notable stars who appeared as Archie Andrew’s tutors, including Tony Hancock, Max Bygraves, Beryl Reid and Hattie Jacques. Worker’s Playtime, the popular lunchtime entertainment for factory workers begun in 1941 and broadcast directly from factories ‘somewhere in England’, introduced a myriad of stars including Jack Warner, Elsie and Doris Waters, and later Cyril Fletcher and Val Doonican. -

The song was introduced by James Melton in the film Melody for Two. It has been recorded by many artists since. Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 – April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century.” Nicknamed "Sassy", "The Divine One" and "Sailor" (for her salty speech), Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. At the age of 18 she was immediately thrust into stardom after a winning amateur night performance at Harlem's Zeus Theater. She gave concerts and toured right up till the time of her death, playing with many famous jazz musicians. She won the highest honour in jazz the Jazz Masters Award in 1989. Track 2 Bobby Shafto Bobby Shafto is an English language folk song. The earliest printed version is in 1805. No-one is quite sure who Bobby Shafto was. The Blaydon Aces Roly Veitch and fellow guitarist James Birkett joined up as 'The Blaydon Aces'. Their versions are quite traditional in style but the accompaniments behind the vocals are original with dialects quite natural and unforced. Track 3 Let Me Call You Sweetheart Let Me Call You Sweetheart is a popular song, with music by Leo Friedman and lyrics by Beth Slater Whitson. The song was published in 1910 and first recorded by The Peerless Quartet. -
