Last year was my first endeavour as Artistic Director, and call it beginner’s luck, the festival significantly increased our audience attendance. This year, we have expanded the team to embrace new members, creating unprecedented synergy and passion. As a result, our programme has grown from 29 to 35 feature films from 14 countries and regions, of which there are 3 international and 12 European premieres. We welcome guests from 10 countries and regions. Our Competition continues to champion new talent, featuring 9 films by directors with a singular voice, tackling multicultural themes. Our Official Selection again offers a wide spectrum of genres that challenge, inform and entertain. This year, we boast a breathtaking lineup from mainland China, all made with a piercing social conscience. Our theme “Little People. Big World” spotlights minority or marginalised children all over Asia, but also concerns any individual trying to find their feet in a complex globalised environment. We introduce a new culinary section — OISHII Asia. Each of our films showcases a mouthwatering national cuisine, which will whet your appetite for the meals sold by our pan-Asian catering partners in the cinemas. We also hold two Special Presentations that we believe are of particular aesthetic and social worth for Dutch audiences. Our special events promise to engage and enthral. As FilmLAB celebrates its 10th year as The Netherland’s only talent incubator dedicated solely to filmmakers with Asian roots, we are proud to present four documentaries on the subject of “Crafts and Cultural Heritage.” We are simultaneously organising FilmLAB Writers Room to mentor 10 participants developing short film scripts. Last year, the masterclass on directing held by CinemAsia’s jury members Martin Koolhoven and Joko Anwar was a big hit. This year, we welcome Mary Stephen, a Hong Kong-born, world-renowned editor for Eric Rohmer, to hold a keynote lecture on storytelling that harmonises East and West. We’ve also stepped up fostering ties 3 between Dutch and Asian filmmakers in our industry programme. This year we continue our partnership with Taipei Media School (TMS) as we welcome new interns Michael Zeng and Tony Yu, while playing a bigger role in cross- cultural education, by partnering with arts school IVKO and Voices of Tolerance to develop co-productions by Taiwanese and Dutch high school students. The completed films are premiered at CinemAsia Film Festival.     ANNUAL REPORT 2006 The International Writing Program at The University of Iowa 1 Greetings, I am pleased to send you the annual report of the International Writing Program (IWP), which for nearly forty years has offered a unique residency for professional writers from around the world. The literary community created by the IWP, a community of poets, fiction writers, essayists, playwrights and screenwriters from more than 120 countries, stands as a testament to the myriad ways in which service to the word, in every language, can help to bridge differences between peoples and nations divided. Only connect—the governing idea of the program—means that we devote the fall to connecting writers to readers, translators, students and people from every background. And this report offers a glimpse into some of the connections that last year’s writers made. I am also pleased to tell you that the IWP is evolving in a dynamic fashion. In 2006 we hosted our first symposium on the Greek island of Paros, bringing together writers from every corner of the earth to discuss what we hold in common. A Greek film maker made a documentary about the symposium and an e-book of the essays written for the occasion is in the works. As I write these lines we are preparing not only for another symposium, on the subject of justice, but also for a tour of the Middle East designed to introduce some of America’s most prominent writers to their counterparts in Syria, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. In the spring of 2008, in partnership with the University of Iowa’s Young Writers Studio, we will launch a project called Between the Lines, bringing a dozen high school students from six Arabic-speaking countries to take part in a summer writing workshop, which we expect to deepen our connection to this strategic part of the world, creating new networks of writers and readers.

Aruna dan Lidahnya is directed by Edwin, while Titien Wattimena wrote the screenplay. Food lover Aruna (Dian Sastrowardoyo) is assigned to investigate bird flu cases in several places of Indonesia. Her friends, chef Bono (Nicholas Saputra) and food writer Nad (Hannah Al Rashid), join her on a mission of their own: culinary delights. In the first city, Surabaya, they run into Farish (Oka Antara), Aruna’s former colleague and crush, who says he is also working on the bird flu cases. Thus, work then takes them to Madura’s Pamekasan as well as Kalimantan’s Pontianak and Singkawang. Along the way, Aruna senses something suspicious in the investigation and is forced to face her doubts along with her unresolved feelings toward Farish. The movie takes its time to introduce each character’s personality: the simple Aruna, the adventurous Nad, the easygoing Bono and the apprehensive Farish. Their traits are slowly revealed through a lot of conversations and small talk over food.

By focusing on several recent Hong Kong genre films as case studies, it examines how the China factor is negotiated in Vulgaria (低俗喜劇 Disu xiju, 2012) and The Midnight After (那夜凌晨,我坐上了旺角開往大埔的紅 VAN Naye lingchen, wo zuoshang le Wangjiao kaiwang Dapu de hong van, 2014), considering the politics of languages alongside the imaginary of the disappearance of Hong Kong’s local cultures in the post-handover era. It also highlights two post-Umbrella- Revolution films, Trivisa ( 樹大招風 Shuda zhaofeng, 2016) and The Mobfathers (選老頂 Xuan lao ding, 2016), to explore how the China factor is negotiated in light of the collective anxieties of Hongkongers regarding the handover and controversies in the current electoral system of Hong Kong. By doing so, this article argues that the re-negotiations of the China factor in contemporary Hong Kong genre cinema have become more and more politically reflexive given the increasingly severe political interference of the Beijing sovereignty that has violated the autonomy of Hong Kong, while forming a discourse of resistance of Hongkongers against possible neo- colonialism from the Chinese authorities in the postcolonial city.

    “Our Time Will Come” Wins 5 Trophies at Hong Kong Film Awards The 37th Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony took place on 15 April at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The star-studded event this year was broadcast live on ViuTV, which had produced a series of film awards-themed programmes to usher in the big day, including reality shows on the nominees of Best New Director and Best New Performer. Ann Hui’s wartime epic “Our Time Will Come”, based on the heroics of a resistance group fighting Japanese occupation in Hong Kong, was the big winner bagging five awards. Wilson Yip’s action film “Paradox” received three nods while upcoming director Chan Tai Lee’s “Tomorrow Is Another Day” snatched two. “Tomorrow is Another Day” is a social drama that puts autism on the big screen. Veteran actor Louis Koo continued his awards-winning streak by picking up his first Best Actor honour at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
