THIS list contains 2 species of TANAIDAcEA,6 of IsoPoDA and 28 of AMPHJPODA.These were all collected by myself in 1934-5, with the exception of 3 species of Amphipoda, which have not been entered in the Plymouth list although accounts of their capture at Plymouth have been published. These are Eusirus longipes Boeck, recorded by Hunt (1924) ; Gammarellus angulosus (Fabr.), by Kitching, Macan and Gilson (1934); and Gammarus zaddachi Sexton, by Serventy (1935). The list is drawn up in the systematic order adopted in Plymouth Marine Fauna (1931), with a reference to a good illustration of each species. The dates and circumstances of capture are stated, and when a species has already been recorded from offthe coasts of Devon and Corn- wall by Norman and Scott (1906) a note to that effect has been made. The distribution is not stated, since recent accounts of the distribution of every species are available in the following works: Tanaidacea and Isopoda: Nierstrasz and Stekhoven, '1930 (except for Synisoma acuminatana, q.v.). Amphipoda: Chevreux and Fage (1925) or Stephensen (1929). All the Amphipod species in this list are included in one or other of these publications, and almost all in both. POOL C.ORNISH is a Celtic language, closely akin to Welsh and Breton, which remained the ordinary spoken language of most Cornish people until about 1500 and of a steadily decreasing minority until the late 18th century, its last survival being confined to small areas of the Penwith and Lizard peninsulas in the far west of Cornwall. Dolly Pentreath of Mousehole, who died in 1777, was not, as is commonly believed, the last to speak Cornish, but was certainly one of the last native speakers, and by 1800 at the very latest Cornish had finally died out as a spoken language, its revival as such being then more than a century in the future and totally unforeseen. It never- theless survived in traditionally remembered sayings and phrases, in hundreds of dialect words, but principally in thousands of names of places. Not only every village and farm, but also every field and prominent natural feature had its own name, and in the far west where the language survived the longest these names are nearly all Cornish, the few English ones being mostly modern. Generally, the further east in Cornwall one goes, the earlier Cornish gave‘ place to English and the smaller is the proportion of Cornish names, until in Tamar-side parishes they are a small minority. In the east, Cornish names often contain certain words as they were spelt at an earlier stage in the development of the language than those in the west, re- fiecting the earlier date at which use of the language ceased; thus nans, valley, is almost invariably found in names as nance in the west and mmt (the earlier form) in the east.

  • Lansallos Description
    Lansallos Parish, a description The modern parish of Lansallos is bordered by Lanteglos in the west, Looe in the east and St Veep, Lanreath, Pelynt and Duloe on its northern side. Lansallos includes the historic parishes of Talland and Lansallos. It extends from the area of the small community of Lansallos and St Ildierna's church in the west to the communities of Porthallow and Talland and St Tallanus's church which overlooks the splendid Talland Bay in the east. The hamlet of Trenewan lies in the northwestern corner while to the northeast the parish extends as far as Kilminorth Woods and the estuary of the West Looe river. Polperro lies in the middle of the modern parish. From its ancient origins as a Gishing community centred on the harbour, the village has gradually extended irst along the steep- sided valleys of the River Pol and its tributaries and more recently into the relatively Glat areas well above the historic settlement, most notably including BrentGields, Carey Park and other developments around the old manor of Killigarth. The extended area of Polperro, including Langreek, Longcoombe, BrentGields, Carey Park and Killigarth, accounts for approximately 77 percent of the present population of Lansallos parish. Most of the lower part of the village was designated as a Conservation Area in 1969, one of the earliest places in the country to be recognised in this way. The parish is characterised by beautiful rural landscapes of rolling farmland separated by steep-sided and often tree- lined valleys, the ancient woodlands of Kilminorth Woods bordering the West Looe River, and a coastal strip of largely unmanaged, semi-natural vegetation on steep cliffs above attractive coves and small beaches.
