Dear Parents, As we are coming to the close of the 2018-19 school year, we wanted to inform you about a change coming in the fall. While we have enjoyed our time at Lone Star Language Academy this year on Tuesday afternoons for Mid-Week Hebrew, we have decided to move back to St. Andrew United Methodist Church next year. St. Andrew underwent some major renovations to their school wing this year, but they have completed the majority of the work and are thrilled that we will be returning again for our Mid-Week Hebrew sessions. As a reminder, St. Andrew United Methodist Church is located at 5801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano. Our first Tuesday at St. Andrew will be on September 10, 2019 beginning at 4:30pm and concluding at 6:00pm. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this change in more depth, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or Karen Thompson at [email protected].

ESL (English as a Second Language) What’s it like to teach the English language to newcomers to the United States? We asked a few of our ESL volunteers to find out! This year’s woman of valor Lonna Rae Silverman has this to say: “I have been tutoring a blind refugee and found the experience to be so enlightening and exciting. When she smiles, laughs, sings, and dances with me I know that she is understanding as she repeats the words over and over again. To be a good tutor is to be aware of differences and be extremely patient while the person is processing all the new sounds. Using materials that are familiar to the person will help with the transition to understanding the meaning of words.”

DAI Chairperson: Barry Lachman [email protected] 214-808-0042

Temple Shalom is a member of Dallas Area Interfaith (DAI), an organization of over 25 congregations and other organizations which engage in the work of Social Justice. DAI is involved with a number of issues this year including immigration, housing, health care, police community relations, community development and education, and the local elections for Mayor and City Council. DAI had a strategic planning meeting at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in April to define our directions for this year. We plan to work in collaboration with other Northern Cluster congregations to define a joint agenda for this year. Education, health care and affordable housing topped our list for action. We will be having a House Meeting of interested individuals in May to define Temple Shalom’s role. On April 4, a number of DAI leaders joined with similar organizations throughout the State to advocate for our issues at the Texas Legislature. We need to continue to build our Core Team for DAI and to continue to work with other DAI member organizations on Social Justice issues. Contact Barry Lachman for upcoming DAI events or to become involved. Upcoming DAI Events
