Guildford Book Festival 2021 2021 3—26 OCTOBER Guildford Book Festival WWW.GUILDFORDBOOKFESTIVAL.CO.UK Welcome to the Festival 2021 As restrictions lift and we begin a cautious return to normal life we are excited PROGRAMME to be moving forward with plans for the 32nd Guildford Book Festival this October. GuildfordWith more than 30 speakers taking part in live events at venues across the town, we are once again looking forward to lively debates and entertaining talks provided by some of this country’s finest writers and best-known Bookpersonalities. Festival Among the highlights this year are Hollywood actress, Hayley Mills, speaking about her life as a celebrated child actress; award-winning writer, Sebastian Faulks; TV chef and family favourite, Nadiya Hussain; and former politician, 3-24VinceOCTOBER Cable, discussing the West’s relationship with China. Historians Max Hastings, Alison Weir and Marc Morris make welcome returns to Guildford, while broadcasters Mel Giedroyc and Jeremy Vine, both Surrey-born, will be at the festival to talk about their debut novels. Mental health campaigner, Jake Tyler, will leading a walking talk through the town, while Tim Jackson, Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey, will dare us to imagine a world beyond capitalism. We are delighted that two of our most popular events, Readers’ Day and the Literary Lunch, can return this year. Also returning is our School’s Programme. It’s truly wonderful to see the excitement among pupils as we take authors back into schools to inspire the next generation of young writers and readers. And, finally a heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors, especially our headline sponsor, SIMBA. Without their support, and the support of individuals who sign up to be a Friend, the Festival cannot exist and we are grateful to each and every one of you. TURN OVER A NEW LEAF See you in October. ‘Th ank God for great journalism. Th is book is a much needed, ex- haustively researched and eff ortlessly well written recent history of Ethiopia. A book that strips away the cant and rumour, the pros and antis and thoroughly explains the people, politics and economics of that most beautiful nation. A superb and vital piece of work by some- one who clearly loves the country of which he writes.’ Bob Geldof ‘Th e great Ethiopian famine changed everything and nothing. It fun- damentally altered the rich world’s sense of its responsibility to the hungry and the poor, but didn’t solve anything. A quarter of a century on, we’re still arguing about the roots of the problem, let alone the so- lution, and—though there has been progress—Ethiopia’s food inse- curity gets worse, not better. Peter Gill was one of the most thorough and eff ective television journalists of his generation. He was there in 1984 and his work at the time added up to the most sensible, balanced and comprehensive explanation of what had happened. Twenty-fi ve years later, he’s gone back to test decades of aspiration against the re- alities on the ground. It’s a book that bridges journalism and history, judicious analysis with a strong, and often gripping, narrative. Always readable, but never glib, this is a must for all those who think there is a simple answer to the famine, still waiting in the wings. ’ Michael Buerk ‘No outsider understands Ethiopia better than Peter Gill. He com- bines compassion with a clinical commitment to the truth.

It seems a mere matter of minutes since I was invested as President by John Loynton last December. I have been very privileged to have been invited to serve as President and I have taken as full a part as my circumstances would The President allow. In a few short weeks, I will be handing over the Presidential ‘gong’ to Johnny Dugdale. I am personally delighted that he will be taking the job. He is a hard-working and valuable member of the committee. I must pay tribute to the OSA Committee. I have known members of your Committee for many years, but I had not, hitherto, appreciated the exceptional commitment and talent that goes into the running of the Association. There have been some challenges this year and many people have worked very hard to meet those challenges. It is, perhaps, unfair to single out individuals, as all make great contributions. I must, however, mention those with whom I have had the greatest interaction.

The Silhillian 2019 P E I A R S T E V E R A N A I T N A R E E V P E R S Solihull c1936 THE SILHILLIAN 1 Welcome to the new look Silhillian From the Chairman of the OSA Committee, Barry Allen (Windsor 1968-1975) At school, I always seemed to be answering exam questions on the topic of “revolution or evolution?” The production of this Silhillian magazine in conjunction with the school’s Development and Old Silhillians’ Office might seem like a revolution, but it is really a natural evolution of the Association’s relationship with the school. We are indebted to the school for the increasing energy which is being put into widening contacts within the Old Silhillian community and between Old Silhillians and the school. That can only make us a more inclusive organization – to the benefit of a much wider group – and it is reflected in the varied content of this magazine. Enjoy it, and please provide feedback on what you would like to see in future editions. Ultimately, we all share a common – perhaps short, but often very significant – period in our lives. The Association exists to maintain links between us and to help, where we can, the pupils to face a challenging world. Please get involved if you are able to. Barry Allen (Windsor 1968-1975). Finally, we are looking forward to our centenary in 2021. That will be a special year in the history of the Association. • The Educational Backgrounds of Leading Journalists
The Educational Backgrounds of Leading Journalists June 2006 NOT FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE 00.01 HOURS THURSDAY JUNE 15TH 2006 1 Foreword by Sir Peter Lampl In a number of recent studies the Sutton Trust has highlighted the predominance of those from private schools in the country’s leading and high profile professions1. In law, we found that almost 70% of barristers in the top chambers had attended fee-paying schools, and, more worryingly, that the young partners in so called ‘magic circle’ law firms were now more likely than their equivalents of 20 years ago to have been independently-educated. In politics, we showed that one third of MPs had attended independent schools, and this rose to 42% among those holding most power in the main political parties. Now, with this study, we have found that leading news and current affairs journalists – those figures who are so central in shaping public opinion and national debate – are more likely than not to have been to independent schools which educate just 7% of the population. Of the top 100 journalists in 2006, 54% were independently educated an increase from 49% in 1986. Not only does this say something about the state of our education system, but it also raises questions about the nature of the media’s relationship with society: is it healthy that those who are most influential in determining and interpreting the news agenda have educational backgrounds that are so different to the vast majority of the population? What is clear is that an independent school education offers a tremendous boost to the life chances of young people, making it more likely that they will attain highly in school exams, attend the country’s leading universities and gain access to the highest and most prestigious professions.

Whether it’s in reference to the shattering of the All Blacks veneer of invincibility or anticipating the impact of Brexit, there’s a tendency in times of social instability to seek refuge in the safety of more predictable times. Perhaps this is why there was such an outpouring of nostalgia and warm hearted appreciation when it was announced last weekend that former BBC newsreader, Rich- ard Baker, had died aged 93. Baker, who introduced the first bulletin to be broadcast on BBC television, reportedly ended his days entertaining fellow residents at his retirement home. He would, according to the BBC’s own obituary, read all the newspapers and cut out the interest- ing headlines. Then, at Six O’clock, he would read them aloud to his companions over supper. Baker was, of course, the product of an era when the authority and objectivity of BBC journalists were rarely challenged.
