A book that strips away the cant and rumour, the pros and antis and thoroughly explains the people, politics and economics of that most beautiful nation. A superb and vital piece of work by some- one who clearly loves the country of which he writes.’ Bob Geldof ‘Th e great Ethiopian famine changed everything and nothing. It fun- damentally altered the rich world’s sense of its responsibility to the hungry and the poor, but didn’t solve anything. A quarter of a century on, we’re still arguing about the roots of the problem, let alone the so- lution, and—though there has been progress—Ethiopia’s food inse- curity gets worse, not better. Peter Gill was one of the most thorough and eff ective television journalists of his generation. He was there in 1984 and his work at the time added up to the most sensible, balanced and comprehensive explanation of what had happened. Twenty-fi ve years later, he’s gone back to test decades of aspiration against the re- alities on the ground. It’s a book that bridges journalism and history, judicious analysis with a strong, and often gripping, narrative.     The Silhillian 2019 P E I A R S T E V E R A N A I T N A R E E V P E R S Solihull c1936 THE SILHILLIAN 1 Welcome to the new look Silhillian From the Chairman of the OSA Committee, Barry Allen (Windsor 1968-1975) At school, I always seemed to be answering exam questions on the topic of “revolution or evolution?” The production of this Silhillian magazine in conjunction with the school’s Development and Old Silhillians’ Office might seem like a revolution, but it is really a natural evolution of the Association’s relationship with the school. We are indebted to the school for the increasing energy which is being put into widening contacts within the Old Silhillian community and between Old Silhillians and the school. That can only make us a more inclusive organization – to the benefit of a much wider group – and it is reflected in the varied content of this magazine. Enjoy it, and please provide feedback on what you would like to see in future editions. Ultimately, we all share a common – perhaps short, but often very significant – period in our lives.     The Educational Backgrounds of Leading Journalists June 2006 NOT FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE 00.01 HOURS THURSDAY JUNE 15TH 2006 1 Foreword by Sir Peter Lampl In a number of recent studies the Sutton Trust has highlighted the predominance of those from private schools in the country’s leading and high profile professions1. In law, we found that almost 70% of barristers in the top chambers had attended fee-paying schools, and, more worryingly, that the young partners in so called ‘magic circle’ law firms were now more likely than their equivalents of 20 years ago to have been independently-educated. In politics, we showed that one third of MPs had attended independent schools, and this rose to 42% among those holding most power in the main political parties. Now, with this study, we have found that leading news and current affairs journalists – those figures who are so central in shaping public opinion and national debate – are more likely than not to have been to independent schools which educate just 7% of the population. Of the top 100 journalists in 2006, 54% were independently educated an increase from 49% in 1986. Not only does this say something about the state of our education system, but it also raises questions about the nature of the media’s relationship with society: is it healthy that those who are most influential in determining and interpreting the news agenda have educational backgrounds that are so different to the vast majority of the population? What is clear is that an independent school education offers a tremendous boost to the life chances of young people, making it more likely that they will attain highly in school exams, attend the country’s leading universities and gain access to the highest and most prestigious professions.

Perhaps this is why there was such an outpouring of nostalgia and warm hearted appreciation when it was announced last weekend that former BBC newsreader, Rich- ard Baker, had died aged 93. Baker, who introduced the first bulletin to be broadcast on BBC television, reportedly ended his days entertaining fellow residents at his retirement home. He would, according to the BBC’s own obituary, read all the newspapers and cut out the interest- ing headlines. Then, at Six O’clock, he would read them aloud to his companions over supper. Baker was, of course, the product of an era when the authority and objectivity of BBC journalists were rarely challenged.

Loynton By J. www.solsch.org.uk Solihull School Foreword There has not been a published history of Solihull School since John Burman’s Solihull and its School appeared in 1939 and as part of the celebrations for the School’s 450th anniversary year it was appropriate to produce a new, updated, account. The anniversary has been celebrated in various ways, not least by the building of a new Music School, just as the 400th anniversary was commemorated by the building of the chapel. John Burman’s book is very much a history of the foundation and its development since the School was founded in 1560. in the first chapter he notes that in 1939“the income from endowments makes only a trifling contribution to the total income of the School.” it is a tribute to successive governors since 1939 that this has been dramatically altered and many pupils at Solihull School now benefit from their management of the endowment. i was delighted when John loynton agreed to undertake the task of writing a new history. he has an excellent knowledge of the School’s archives, having taken over from Denis Tomlin as archivist. John’s experience as a member of the School’s history department for twenty five years meant that he had first hand knowledge of many of the individuals mentioned in the later stages of the book.
