A ’s Journey Event script

Entry Script Use this script of one of your own invention to lead readers on a quest to become a knight.

“Squire(s), the king believes you are ready to become a knight. He has asked me to present you with this sword.” [Hand child a sword]

“In to be dubbed a knight you must learn the Code of . The codes are placed around the store/library. Collect all six Code of Chivalry cards to become a knight.” [Point to the Chivalry posters]

When you have collected all the codes, find the King/Queen and become a knight! [Hand letter to child]

“Have you learned all the codes?”

“Yes? Then show me your cards.”

“You have learned what you need to know to become a knight. The King is Pleased. Take a knee.” [Have child kneel before you]

“Your name, squire?”

“Squire______, I dub you a knight. [Tap each shoulder of the child with a sword] May your heart be true and your sword be loyal for all the days of your life. Huzzah for Sir/Lady ______. A knight of the Realm!”

“This is the story of how Mortimer becomes a knight. [Show a copy of To Find A Wonder by Jennifer Carson] “Or you may explore other great knight stories.” [Indicate the rest of the book display.] Check periodically to make sure you have enough Chivalry Code cards at each location.

Ending. Use the script as a guide to allow readers to know that they have successfully learned all the Codes of Chivalry and can be dubbed a knight. Then introduce the readers to To Find A Wonder by Jennifer Carson and/or other favorite knight books. Posters. Fill in the dates of your event on the poster and post it in the community.

Select two people to help with the event. One person will hand out the letters at the entry of the journey and the second person will be at the close of the journey dubbing and promoting knight books. Choose outgoing people. The more dramatic the two volunteers are, the better. They can wear medieval or renaissance costumes if they choose. Try to find or make a larger sword for the dubbing ceremony.

Print & display the Codes of Chivalry. Print the chivalry code posters. Post them in your store or library the day of your event.

Print & cut the Codes of chivalry Cards. The Chivalry Cards will need to be double sided. Print or copy and cut the cards evenly. Produce enough so each reader participating in the journey will be able to keep a set of six. Place a stack of each chivalry card near the corresponding poster.

Copy the King’s Letter. Make a letter for each participant. Place the letters on the entry table the day of the event.

Make badges for each participant. Copy the badge on cardstock. Have the participants color their own badge.

Make a display of knight books. The Knight’s Journey event is based on To Find A Wonder by Jennifer Carson. If you would like bookplates signed by the author for your copies of To Find A Wonder, contact the author at www.findawonder.com. You may also want to display your other knight or dragon books. Decorate the table with knight figures, coins, dragons and other medieval themed adornment.

Read aloud. This Knight’s Journey event is based on the action on pages 64-67 of To Find A Wonder by Jennifer Carson. You might choose to read aloud from these pages as part of your events.

Holding A Knight’s Journey Event:

Entry. Greet your young readers at a table that has a basket or treasure box holding the King’s letters. Read the entry script and perform the actions described. Feel free to jazz it up in any way you are comfortable with. A Knight’s Journey Event Kit

Knights and dragons are always popular with young readers, but in the past few years the phenomenon has grown bigger. Here is an event kit designed around the popular knight book, To Find A Wonder by Jennifer Carson. The Knight’s Journey event kit can be used not only to get children excited about Carson’s middle grade novella, but your entire knight book collection.

At the start of A Knight’s Journey the reader will receive a sword and a letter. The letter will challenge the reader to learn the code of chivalry in order to become a knight. The journey to become a knight will be laid out in your store or library with posters. As the readers find each poster they collect a chivalry card. When all 6 chivalry cards are collected the reader can visit the King/Queen and be dubbed a knight. They then receive the badge of their liege knight.

Preparing for the journey:

Find Swords. Small plastic swords can be found at any party store in the cake decorating supplies. You can also order them in bulk from an online party store.

Purchase Parchment Paper. For an authentic look to the King’s letters, purchase sheets of parchment paper that can go through your copier. Print the letters. You may choose to cut each scroll out or simply roll each letter and tie with a . Event Kit
