WERRIBEE DEVILS CLUB CURRICULUM RATIONALE

Why do we need a Club Curriculum?

Werribee is adopting & implementing a Club Curriculum to develop consistency in what is taught, learnt & valued across the entire Werribee Devils Representative Program from VJBL Junior teams through to Big V Senior Teams. Having a consistent philosophy across the program

will help develop a clear pathway and program for all players. It will also

develop a feeling of club unity and greater integration between all teams, age groups and the junior & senior program. There are numerous examples

of professional and association level sporting clubs that have successfully

implemented a “Club Philosophy” including Barcelona in Soccer, Cairns

Basketball (from NBL down to U/12 Rep) & many more. It is important to

note that the club curriculum is ‘athlete centered’, meaning that it is 7

designed to consider “what is best for the athlete?”. The content of the Club

Curriculum is aimed to prepare athletes to succeed at higher levels within

the player pathway e.g. Basketball Victoria & the Basketball Australia elite 1 athlete pathway, the Senior Big V program, US College system &

professional leagues. 0

How was the Club Curriculum developed?

The Werribee Basketball Club Curriculum has been developed by the WBA Player & Coach Development Manager in consultation with many internal & external stakeholders including:

Big V Senior & Youth League Head Coaches.

Werribee Devils Representative Coaching Leads.

Experienced Werribee Devils Representative Coaches. Basketball Victoria High Performance Coaches. High Performance Coaches from other states. Various other experienced professional level basketball coaches

& Directors of Coaching from other large Victorian Associations.

Compiling documentation already developed by BV, BA & FIBA.

Alignment with Basketball Victoria &

Basketball Australia 7

The Werribee Club Curriculum has a strong link & alignment with the Basketball Victoria & Basketball Australia directives on style of play & 1 curriculum so that our players are given the best possible chance to progress along the state and national pathway. The Werribee Club Curriculum is strongly influenced by & linked with the:

Basketball Australia, National style of play developed by Boomers

& Opals Head Coaches. 0

The Victorian State curriculum developed by Basketball Victoria. 2 4

Explaining the Framework

The Club Curriculum Framework provides an overview of what we at

Werribee Basketball want to develop in our athletes, teams and the broader Werribee Devils Representative program. It demonstrates the continuity of each aspect of athlete, team & program development and the holistic approach that we undertake when planning the content of the club curriculum.

At the top of our framework are our values. Our values determine

what our players, teams and overall club promote in all aspects of basketball. Our values link into our style of play, system of play, player attributes as well as skills & concepts we teach. Teamwork, for example, is demonstrated in our style of play through promoting

players to sacrifice and work for the best shot for the team. This is

achieved through drilling “extra pass” concepts as explained further in 7 the curriculum. Teaching players when & how to make the extra pass is developed through the concepts & skills our players learn. All aspects of the Club Curriculum Framework are interlinked & 1 connected. 0

WERRIBEE DEVILS - VALUES Our Club Values

The Werribee Basketball Association aims to become the leading basketball program in Australia for player & coach development and the Association of Choice in Melbourne’s West. However, above all our number one aim is to fulfil our social responsibility to develop good people. Part of the holistic development of our athletes is to ensure we instill strong values that will last with athletes into their adult life & beyond their playing days. Our values create our club culture, our culture is who & what we are!

TEAMWORK

Werribee players are ‘team first’ players. They make sacrifices and “buy in” to doing what is best for the team on both ends of the floor. This extends to their teammates and club off the court. Werribee teams huddle on stoppages, give high fives, encourage & communicate positively to each other. Werribee players are great teammates! “Talent wins games, but teamwork & intelligence wins championships” – Michael Jordan

COMMITMENT Werribee players are committed to the team/club. Werribee players make rep basketball a priority and take it seriously. Werribee players attend all practices, games and are always on time/punctual & wear their uniform with pride “There are only two options regarding commitment. You’re either IN or you’re OUT! There is no such life as in-between” – Pat Riley 7

WERRIBEE DEVILS - VALUES Our Club Values

Part of the holistic development of our athletes is to ensure we instill strong values that will last with athletes into their adult life & beyond their playing days. Our values create our club culture, our culture is who & what we are!

HARD WORK

Werribee players understand the importance of hard work to be successful. Werribee players work hard at team practice to make each other better and do the ‘unrequired’ work outside of team commitments to improve individually to be the best they can be. Werribee players take accountability for their own development and work hard to make each player on their team better. “Confidence is what happens when you’ve done the hard work that entitles you to succeed” – Pat Summitt

RESILIENCE

Werribee players are mentally tough and can handle ‘setbacks’. When things don’t go their way, they stick together with their teammates, take accountability and find ways to continually to develop & improve. “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny” – C.S. Lewis 8

OFFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY

Effective Use of (3 Phases)

“PACE” (FIRST 8 SECONDS) Fast-break/early offence. Play with “pace & space,” extremely important to fill transition floor spots. Look for 2 v 1 & 3 v 2 situations; kick aheads for , drive & kick options, deep seals, post catches & transition ("punch/drag") ball action.

“POISE” (MIDDLE 8 SECONDS) Purposeful movement/motion: ball reversal, cutting action… still look to score & be aggressive however, we don’t want to force shots or take long contested 2s. Be poised!

“PENETRATION” (LAST 8 SECONDS) The last 8 seconds is a great time to score as the defence gets tired, lazy or complacent. Do not rush, be controlled & look to get penetration off the dribble or pass to create high-quality shots.

#WeAreWerribee 9

OFFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY

High Quality Shot Selection

LAYUPS/ POINTS IN THE PAINT Putting ‘heat on the rim’ will lead to higher percentages shots both inside & outside. FREE-THROWS If we are aggressive & attack the paint, as well as get the ball to our post players, we will put pressure on the D, which will force them to & draw free throws.

OPEN UNCONTESTED JUMP SHOTS (WITHIN YOUR SHOOTING RANGE) If we are able to get dribble penetration & get post touches, we will force the defence to rotate/scramble. This can result in open, uncontested shots that are higher percentage.

SHOTS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME Understanding the context of the game & what shot is required for the betterment of the team. For example, dependent on momentum, scoring runs, balance of outside/inside shots taken, players must work for the best shot we can/need to get.

#WeAreWerribee 10

OFFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY

General Principles of Play

BALL REVERSAL To shift the defence & create an advantage the ball must be reversed.

PURPOSEFUL MOVEMENT (CUTTING & SCREENING) Within our offensive structures, all actions need to be completed with “purpose” & done at pace. Even cuts that are generally “sacrificial” need to be made as scoring cuts.

POST PLAY (INSIDE/OUTSIDE GAME) It is tried and true that all good teams get the ball inside. Post players regularly shoot high percentages & put pressure on the defence, it also opens up the outside game by forcing rotations.

TWO MAN-GAME SITUATIONS (ON-BALLS/HANDOFFS ETC.) On-ball screens & dribble handoffs to create penetration off the dribble & passes to the post/big. Develop players’ ability to make reads & react to the defence (decision making).

RECEIVER RULES – 5 D’S "Driver"; "Drifter/Diagonal" (shooting wall); "Dunker" (inside) & "Drag" (fill behind). Emphasis on making the extra pass, we wnat to encourage athletes to give up a good shot for a great one. 11

OFFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY

Key Traits of Players on the Offensive End

HIGHLY SKILLED & ADAPTABLE Players must be versatile, have great skill packages & be able to score in a various ways.

QUICK CONFIDENT DECISION MAKERS, WHO ARE AGGRESSIVE Players must look to be aggressive & make quick decisions e.g. pass, drive or shoot.

"TEAM FIRST" PLAYERS We want team players that buy into the style of play e.g. use of shot clock, shot selection, receiver rules – make the extra pass & other teams structures/philosophies.

#WeAreWerribee 12

DEFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY

Traits of our Defence & our Players on Defence

PRIDE & TOUGHNESS We want players who take pride in their defence, will dive on loose balls, scrap for rebounds, and will fight for everything on each possession, giving multiple efforts.

MAKE EVERY SHOT CONTESTED Defensively, we want to stop fast breaks, layups, uncontested shots & second chance opportunities. We want to make every shot contested!

FOUL DISCIPLINE We want to be disciplined on defence and avoid fouling as much as possible. When players drive to the basket we want to make them “finish over hands” & avoid bailing them out.

#WeAreWerribee 13

DEFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY

Transition Defence

“TAG UP” ON THE RISE OF THE SHOT On the rise of the shot we “rebound to the inside” or go back & protect basket.

STOP THE BALL – “BALL PICK UP” The closest player to the ball stops the ball to slow the break/transition.

COVER THE BASKET – “SAFETY” The furthest player from the ball on the shot becomes the safety to stop layups (protect home).

SHOW HELP TO THE BALL HANDLER – “PLUG” Stunt/hedge & show help to the ball handler to slow them down (delay/disrupt).

“DENY” TAKE AWAY KICK AHEAD PASSES Deny all kick ahead passes (in the lane, up the lane).

Disruptive Defence

FULL & HALF COURT DISRUPTIVE DEFENCE We want to delay/disrupt the opposition in various ways. For example in the full court, against good PG’s we deny them the ball & make someone else bring the ball up e.g. the 4 man. Disruptive defence is not to be confused with pressure defence or press defence. It refers to taking the offence/opposition out of what they want to do. 14

DEFENSIVE STYLE OF PLAY/PHILOSOPHY Man to Man Defence

GUARD YOUR MAN Players must take pride in guarding their direct opponent. We aim to keep our player in front of us; our aim is to keep the ball either behind the edge of the & outside the elbows.

"PACK" DEFENCE/SHELL PRINCIPLES We want to show a ‘pack’ to the opponent with the ball. We must be in the help position early & make ‘one way’ closeouts on shooters. On non- threating drives we recover to our own player and look to take away bail outs. On attacking drives, we aggressively rotate.

"HUSTLE" (LAST 8 SECONDS) In the last 8 seconds of the shot clock we emphasize discipline (no silly fouls), switch any ball screen, try to force a long, contested shot; then we box out/rebound.

Rebounding

BOX OUT (NON-NEGOTIABLE) Everyone must be committed to blocking out every single time. There must always be a collision & we must limit the opposition to only one shot each possession.

TEAM REBOUNDING MENTALITY We must rebound as a pack with guards coming back to get boards, everyone diving on loose balls & making the commitment to keep the opposition to only one shot each time. 15

SYSTEM OF PLAY

Difference between Style of Play & System of Play

There is often confusion between style of play & system of play. Style of play refers to how teams play, what do they look like, what do they value e.g. shot selection. System of play refers to the specific offensive & defensive structures that a team implements. They are interlinked as a team’s system of play will reflect style of play and vice versa.

The ‘Werribee Way’ & Each Team’s Individual System of Play

There is flexibility & adaptability regarding the specific system of play used for each team. As outlined in the in the framework on page 3, the system of play must link with the style of play, it also must teach players the skills, concepts & attributes that we want to develop in our players. Coaches will influence and adapt their ‘system’ to suit the skills, talents & attributes of their playing group each year. However, the ‘system’ implemented by each coach/team must allow players to develop the skills, knowledge & understanding to succeed at higher levels within the player development pathway.

#WeAreWerribee 16

SYSTEM OF PLAY

Werribee Way – System of Play

Dependent on the age group each team's ‘system’ may be of many elements, including:

Transition offence Roles & spacing when transitioning from defence to offence. Transition defence Rules when transitioning from offence to defence. Motion offence Principles of play that teach players how to read & react to the defence. Man to man defence Concepts of how we defend when playing ‘man’ defence (e.g. help principles/positioning). Offensive sets & out of bounds plays Set plays specific to teams/age groups, side & baseline out bounds play. Press-break & zone offence Offensive rules/concepts against trapping & zone defence. Set plays specific to teams/age groups, side & baseline out bounds play.

Zone press & defences Full/half court zone presses and zone defensive principles in the quarter court.

Werribee Basketball has developed a ‘club playbook’ to act as a guide for coaches as to what their system should look like to fit the style of play, teach the appropriate concepts & develop the appropriate skills & attributes in their players. 17

PLAYER ATTRIBUTES

Overview/Explanation

There are many attributes that make up an elite athlete/performer. The WBA program aims to help develop the following attributes in our athletes so that they have the best opportunity to progress along the player development pathway and into elite level programs:

Physical Technical attributes of elite performers attributes of elite performers (athleticism & athletic ability) (sport specific skills)

Height Footwork Wing span Shooting & finishing Vertical jump Sprint speed/agility Passing & catching Flexibility Ability to defend 1 v 1 Core strength Weak hand development Conditioning/endurance

#WeAreWerribee 18

PLAYER ATTRIBUTES

Tactical Psychological attributes of elite performers attributes of elite performers Understanding of basketball Confidence concepts Mental toughness & Ability to read the game/play concentration Decision making Resilience Commitment

Social Emotional attributes of elite performers attributes of elite performers Being a good teammate e.g. Emotional intelligence encouragement Controlling & regulating Fitting into a team on & off emotions court (low maintainance) Celebrating teammates success

Intellectual attributes of elite performers Ability to learn quickly & adapt in various situations Ability to learn in various ways e.g. video analysis, on court, written information. 19

SKILLS Overview/Explanation

For players to be able to play effectively at a high level, it is important for them to develop a well-rounded skill set. The Fundamental Five Skills:

These are the core skills that need to be developed in all Werribee Devils Representative athletes: Footwork Footwork is the “master skill” as every aspect of the game requires footwork. Skills = pivoting (forward & reverse), jab step, onside & crossover step. Shooting & finishing Shot technique (“set, load, release”). Layups (left & right hand). Adaptive/creative finishing (floaters, reverse, euro step & inside hand layups). Dead ball moves (playing off two feet).

Ball handling/dribbling Stationary dribbling . Crossover moves. Two ball & tennis ball dribbling.

Passing &catching Push pass. Bounce pass. 1/ 2 bounce flick pass. Skip pass/overhead pass. Receiving skills (“target hand”/“show ten”/“ & tuck”).

Individual defence – “Ability to guard your man” Closing out (“two hands up”/“perfect closeouts”). 1 v 1 containment full court. 1 v 1 containment half court (top/wing/corner). Foul discipline (avoid “bailing out” the offensive player).

In addition to the Five Fundamentals, there needs to be a large focus on: Weak hand development 2:1 ratio on non-dominant hand over dominant hand in all skills/drills (this is to ensure athletes develop the ability to use both sides of their body). 20

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Advantage/Disadvantage

It is imperative that our athletes learn to make decisions in advantage situations e.g. 2 v 1, 3 v 2, 4 v 3 & 5 v 4. Players must learn to ‘find the open player’, understand good shot selection, understand appropriate spacing, cutting & receiver spots in advantage situations. Coaches must utilize various drills to develop decision making in this situations (both full & half court).

2 v 1 concepts Teaching points – “Driving lane/passing lane”

3 v 2 concepts Teaching points – Spacing, kick ahead & get to “ball side elbow”, create 2 v 1s 21

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Players must learn to ‘find the open player’, understand good shot selection, understand appropriate spacing, cutting & receiver spots in advantage situations. Coaches must utilize various drills to develop decision making in this situations (both full & half court).

4 v 3 concepts Teaching points – Spacing, “trailer” & “wing/rim/skip” concepts.

#WeAreWerribee 22

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Receiver spots – The 5 D’s

All teams/athletes need a strong understanding of “receiver spots” (that is where to move when the ball is driven). We teach the “5 D’s” - “Driver”, “Drift”, “Diagonal”, “Dunker” & “Drag” (fill behind). These rules build into our pick & roll spacing, help us create advantages and allow us to easily teach “extra pass” concepts (split kick).

Guard & wing drive situations & receiver spots (5 Ds) Always fill the same spots regardless of where the drive/dribble penetration comes from (5 D’s).

Driver/Dunker breakdown 2 v 0 & 2 v 2 This aims to develop deeper understanding & improve decision making 23

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Receiver Spots – The 5 D’s

Drift/diagonal breakdown (emphasis on extra pass) Building up in 3 v 0/3 and 4v4 situations to improve decision making & deepen understanding.

#WeAreWerribee 24

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Pass, Cut, Replace

It is important for all athletes to understand the importance of basic basketball concepts and the importance of purposeful ball & player movement. For our athletes to understand this from a young age, they must be taught the concept of “pass and cut”.

3v 0 & 3 v 3 pass & cut Building up pass & cut concepts, spacing & ball reversal from 3 v 0 to 3 v 0. 25

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Pass, Cut, Replace

5 v 5 pass & cut Building “through” & “blur” cuts into 5 v 5 play helps with ball & player movement to open up driving lanes (links with receiver spots).

#WeAreWerribee 26

CONCEPTS

Offensive Concepts

Transition Ball Screens (“Punch” &“Drag” Actions)

One of the offensive concepts we want our athletes to be able to utilize are ball screens in transition. Transition ball screens are extremely effective as they allow the offensive player to get “down hill” and put pressure on the defence before it can get established.

“Drag” screen We want the screener to get underneath the defensive player, screening their “back pocket”. After screening there must be separation (sprint to the rim). 27

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

Transition Ball Screens (“Punch” &“Drag” Actions)

“Punch” screen We also utilize the “punch” screen to get downhill & create advantages. On “punch” the screen is set “flat” & the screener pops.

#WeAreWerribee 28

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

“2-Man Game” Concepts

We want players to understand “two-man game” concepts so they can succeed in any offensive or defensive system.

Side ball screen “Sprint – Smash – Separate”; “Screen the back pocket"

Dribble hand off (DHO) “Dribble at the defender”; “North/South” action on the handoff; guard cut late/hard. 29

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

“2-Man Game” Concepts

“Dribble flip” 1st dribble is attack, 2nd dribble corner lift hard to wing, flip it/screen it/separate.

Post Cut into post triangle (“dive” action) Hard cut into post up… look to play “high/low” action. 30

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

“3-Man Game” Concepts

Similar to how we want our players to understand basic concepts of cutting, spacing, ball movement, transition ball screens & “2-man game” so that they can succeed in any system – we want them to understand common “3-man game” actions/concepts. Concepts such as post triangle (high/low), rules on post catches & “loaded side” actions are important for our players to understand.

High-low action Use of passing angles to find the post player/roller for a scoring opportunity. 31

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

“3-Man Game” Concepts

Pass to post rules Teams must understand rules on the pass to the post & be able to play out of it.

Loaded side actions Back cut into 2 man game (could be ball screen, dribble flip or DHO) 32

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

“3-Man Game” Concepts

Loaded side actions Loaded side ball screen – “Shakes” action (roll & rise/drag)

Wide pin-down

Down Screen 33

CONCEPTS Offensive Concepts

“3-Man Game” Concepts

Loaded side actions

Corner action (flare & slip)

#WeAreWerribee 34

CONCEPTS Defensive Concepts

Players must understand how to defend in disadvantage situations. It is imperative for our athletes to know what we are willing to give up and what we must attempt to stop in these disadvantage situations.

2v1 “Hedge & recover” – force the offence to hesitate or take a .

3v2 “Ball” & “Basket” rotations/communication – force a jump shot (no layups). 35

CONCEPTS Defensive Concepts

Shell Principles

One of the most important concepts for athletes to understand on defence is positioning. Being in the right position is how you ensure you are a good defensive player & good defensive team. “Shell” principles are integral to developing our core & advanced defensive concepts. We use the communication “Stay” or “Go” to signal when we are in rotation or not. There are 4 non-negotiable words on defence – “ball”, “stay”, “go” & “shot”. We refer to this as purposeful communication.

CONCEPTS Defensive Concepts

Defending On-Ball Screens

The pick & roll is one of the most used offensive actions in the game currently. It is imperative that our athletes learn to navigate screens & to execute team defensive schemes against ball screens.
