Letter from Eben Appleton to Charles Walcott, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1912. New York December 12th, 1912 Mr. Charles Walcott, Secty Smithsonian Institute Washington, D.C. Dear Sir: If agreeable to you and the authorities in charge of the National Museum, I shall be very glad to present to that Institution that flag owned by me, and now in possession of the Museum as a loan from me, and known as the Star-Spangled Banner. It has always been my intention to present the flag during my life time to that Institution in the country where it could be conveniently seen by the public, and where it would be well cared for, and the advantages and the appropriateness of the National Museum are so obvious, as to render consideration of any other place unnecessary. Whilst realizing that the poem of Mr. Key is the one thing which renders this flag of more than ordinary interest, it is only right to appreciate the fact that there was a cause for his inspiration. Being detained temporarily on board a British Man of War, he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry, and was inspired by that dramatic scene to give to the Nation his beautiful lines. I must ask therefore, as a condition of this gift, and injustice to the Commandant of the Fort, and the brave men under him, that their share in the inspiration of this poem be embodied in the inscription to be placed in the case containing this flag. I have had forwarded to me copies of the inscriptions contained in the case at present, and do not think they could be improved upon, but as I desire now to make a specific choice, will say that the following is the one which I prefer, and should like to be assured by you will be the official marking-- The Star Spangled Banner Garrison Flag of Fort McHenry, Baltimore, during the bombardment of the Fort by the British Sept.13-14, 1814, when it was gallantly and successfully [sic.] defended by colonel George Armistead, and the brave men under him. -

Developed by the Dundalk – Patapsco Neck Historical Society & Museum and Edgemere - Sparrows Point Recreation Council Fort Howard was built at North Point, where the Patapsco River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. North Point was historically important long before the fort was constructed.. NORTH POINT Old North Point Road was once an Indian trail leading down the “backbone of Patapsco Neck.” Captain John Smith In 1608, during his epic exploration of the Chesapeake Bay, Captain John Smith and his crew are thought to have entered Old Road Bay, just west of North Point. “They adorn themselves with copper beads and paintings. The women have their legs, hands, chests, and faces cunningly tattooed with beasts, and serpents wrought into their flesh with black dots. In each ear they have 3 great holes whereat they hang chains, bracelets or copper. Some of the men wear in those holes a small green and yellow snake, near half a yard in length which crawling and lapping itself about his neck oftentimes would kiss his lips. Others wear a dead rat tied by the tail, the whole skin of a hawk stuffed with the wings abroad or the hand of their enemy dried.” Captain John Smith describing the natives he met during his exploration of the Chesapeake in 1608. U.S. Coast Guard Historian’s Office Preserving Our History For Future Generations Historic Light Station Information MARYLAND BALTIMORE LIGHT Location: South entrance to Baltimore Channel, Chesapeake Bay, off the mouth of the Magothy River Date Built: Commissioned 1908 Type of Structure: Caisson with octagonal brick dwelling / light tower Height: 52 feet above mean high water Characteristics: Flashing white with one red sector Foghorn: Yes (initially bell, replaced with a horn by 1923) Builder: William H. Flaherty / U. S. Fidelity and Guarantee Co. Appropriation: $120,000 + Range: white – 7 miles, red – 5 miles Status: Standing and Active Historical Information: This is one of the last lighthouses built on the Chesapeake Bay. The fact that it was built at all is a testimony to the importance of Baltimore as a commercial port. The original appropriation request to Congress for a light at this location was made in 1890 and $60,000 was approved four years later. However, bottom tests of proposed sites showed a 55 foot layer of semi-fluid mud before a sand bottom was hit. This extreme engineering challenge made construction of a light within the proposed cost impossible. An additional $60,000 was requested and finally appropriated in 1902. Even then, the project had to be re-bid because no contractor came forth within the allotted budget. Finally, the contract was awarded to William H. Flaherty (who had built the Solomon’s Lump and Smith Point lights). The materials were gathered and partially assembled at Lazaretto Point Depot, then towed to the site and lowered to the bottom in September 1902. -

“Second War of Independence,” Lit the Baltimore Skies in 1814
Baltimore in the War of 1812 The War of 1812, often called America’s “Second War of Independence,” lit the Baltimore skies in 1814. Expecting to cruise with little resistance into the city’s harbor, a British fleet was instead frustrated by American forces at North Point and inside Fort McHenry. The courage of the fort’s defenders during the Battle of Baltimore was witnessed by Francis Scott Key, a Maryland lawyer detained on board a truce vessel after facilitating an American prisoner’s release. Key watched bombs burst along the shoreline and rockets zooming across the sky. But when the smoke cleared and British ships pulled back, a large American flag—measuring 42 feet by 30 feet—fluttered over the fort’s ramparts, prompting him to write the poem that became the national anthem. Day One: Begin your day at the Baltimore Visitor Center at the Inner Harbor. The Society Participates in a Ceremony Honoring Lt Col George Armistead November 2, 2014 Past President, Mike Lyman of the Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Virginia and Councilor Charles Belfield of the Society traveled to the Newmarket Plantation in Caroline County to participate in the unveiling of a new historical roadside marker honoring Lt Col George Armistead who was born on the plantation. The marker was installed on U.S. Route 301 at the entrance to the plantation, however because of limited parking, the ceremony was conducted at the nearby Plantation Cemetery where a monument has his name inscribed. Lyman and Belfield provided the Star Spangled Banner flag which they posted near the monument. Belfield presented the Society wreath and Lyman the Virginia War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission wreath. Lyman also gave greetings from the Society and the Commission The event was conducted by the Caroline County Historical Society. Although the weather was very cold and windy the ceremony was attended by approximately fifty people.
