• Transferred from Utah State 2020-21 Southern Utah Women's Basketball Coaching Staff Head Coach Tracy Sanders Tracy Sanders is in her third year as head coach of the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team. Last season the team saw major improvements and put together one of the best seasons in recent memory. They won 18 total games and 11 conference games, the most since the 2013-14 season when they won a share of the Big Sky title. They also had their second-best all-time scoring season with 2,186 points scored, and set a new re- cord for three-pointers made in a season with 197. Rebecca Cardenas was named the 2019-20 Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year at the end of the season. Cardenas led the conference in steals, averaging 3.0 steals per game overall and 3.2 during conference play. The senior was ranked 14th in the entire NCAA in steals per game and 13th in total steals. The 5’ 5” guard was also ranked 23rd in the Big Sky in blocks with 12 blocks on the season. The Thunderbirds also finished the 2019-20 academic year with a team GPA of 3.742, good enough for No. 5 in the country. Southern Utah was the top-ranked team in the Big Sky with the next closest team being Northern Arizona at No. 20. Montana was the only other Big Sky team in the WBCA Top 25 at No. 22. Sanders joined the Thunderbirds from Saint Mary’s College where she served on staff for 12 years under head coach Paul Thomas. Sanders held the title of Associate Head Coach for her last five seasons. Her duties included coordinating all aspects of recruiting, opponent scouting, game preparation, and player development. Sanders worked primarily with the post players during her time with the Gaels, which led to the development of two WCC Players of the Year, a two-time WCC Defender of the Year, and a WCC Tournament MVP amongst many other accolades. The two-time WCC Defender of the Year, Louella Tomlinson, is the Gael’s all-time lead- ing scorer, taking the title from Sanders herself, and holds the NCAA record for career blocks per game average. Before starting her coaching career in 2000, Sanders was a four-year letterwinner for the Gaels from 1996-2000. During her time as a member of the team, Sanders was a three-time All-WCC First Team member, two-time WCC Tournament Team member (including Tournament MVP in 1999), WCC Freshman of the Year in her inaugural season, and WCC Player of the Year her junior season. She led the conference in scoring for three straight years and finished her career as the WCC’s second all-time leading scorer. In addition to her individual achievements, Sanders led the Gaels to the program’s first NCAA tournament ap- pearance in 1999 and the WNIT in 2000. In 2007, Sanders was inducted into the Saint Mary’s Hall of Fame and in 2014 she was inducted into the WCC Hall of Honor.

Associate Head Coach Katie Gruys Katie Gruys is in her second season as an assistant coach for the Southern Utah women’s basketball team. Before coming to Southern Utah, Gruys spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Willamette University, a Division III institution in Oregon. During her time at WU, the Bearcats had a combined record of 28-24, including a 17-10 record in 2017-18. They would go on to finish that season as the runner-up in the Northwest Conference Tournament and clinch their first winning season since 2000-01. Gruys spent 2016-17 as a graduate assistant at Clemson University, where she was in charge of many adminis- trative duties for the women’s basketball team. She helped with scheduling and team travel, as well as communi- ty service projects and recruiting weekends. Prior to attending Clemson as a graduate student, Gruys earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Ad- ministration from the University of Oregon in 2016. She competed in women’s basketball as well as track and field during all four years at Oregon. She helped the Ducks reach the semifinals of the Women’s National Invita- tional Tournament (WNIT) in 2015-16. While at Oregon, Gruys also was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She helped organize various volunteer and community service opportunities. She worked with 20 other student-athletes to build a sport court in Nicaragua in just one week. In addition, Gruys served as president of the University of Oregon crew in the Love Your Melon Foundation from 2014-16. Love Your Melon raised funds to support children and their families who are battling cancer. She also organized opportunities for Oregon’s student-athletes to visit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Gruys is originally from Annandale, Minnesota. 2020-21 Southern Utah Women's Basketball Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Hailey Mandelko Hailey Mandelko is in her third season as an assistant coach for the Southern Utah women’s basketball team. Before returning to Southern Utah to join the coaching staff, Mandelko was the head girls basketball coach at Lexington High School in Kearney, Nebraska. Mandelko played collegiate basketball for Southern Utah from 2011-2015 and was a big part of the 2013-14 Big Sky Champion Lady T-Birds, setting a top-five record for points in a season (467), top-eight record for free throw percentage in a season (84.5%), and earning a Big Sky All-Conference First Team selection in her junior season. Mandelko finished her career as a Thunderbird ranking fifth all-time in points scored (1,225), fourth all-time in free throw percentage (81.3%), and eighth all-time in three-point field goal percentage (35.1%). Mandelko graduated from Southern Utah University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and human performance.

Assistant Coach Jay Johnson Jay Johnson is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Southern Utah women’s basketball team. Before coming to Southern Utah, Johnson held the title of Director of Women’s Basketball Operations at Saint Mary’s College for the 2017-18 season. During his time as DOBO, Johnson’s duties included video coordination as well as social media, details of team management, travel and logistics for road trips, and scheduling the use of facilities for practices both at home and away. Johnson attended Saint Mary’s College from 2013-17 and graduated in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in finance. 2020-21 Southern Utah Women's Basketball Statistics 2020-21 Southern Utah Women's Basketball Statistics 2020-21 Southern Utah Women's Basketball Statistics Southern Utah Women's Basketball Record Book
