In material matters one should always look at he whose situation is lower than one’s own, and thank the good G-d for His kindness to him. In spiritual matters one should always look at he who is higher than oneself, and plead with G-d to grant him the intelligence to learn from the other, and the ability and strength to rise higher.

9 DAILY WISDOM Inspiring insights on the Torah Monday, 12 Nissan Shabbat, 10 Nissan Bringing Creation to its Fulfillment Consummate Humility [Moses told Aaron and his sons,] “[G-d] will install you [by Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and these rituals] for seven days.” Leviticus 8:33 blessed them. Moses’ and Aaron’s perspectives on the difference between the special sacrifices of the day and those that would be offered up on a regular basis reflect their emphases in our relationship with G-d. Moses was devoted to transmitting G-d’s Torah to the people, whereas Aaron was devoted to elevating the people to the Torah.

The Torah is unchanging truth, whereas human beings are constantly changing. Moses saw the Torah’s truth as being uniformly applicable in all situations, whereas Aaron realized that each situation must be assessed in order to know how to apply the Torah’s unchanging truth effectively. Aaron saw that a one-time sacrifice is different than one that would be offered up regularly, that G-d’s truth can be reflected differently in different contexts.

In our own lives, we must meld Moses’ and Aaron’s perspectives. For ourselves, we must be like Moses, devoted to the Torah’s absolute and unchanging truth. When interacting with others, we, like Aaron, must take into account their moods and inclinations, drawing them closer to the Torah through forgiving love.

Inside Out The Holy Temple in Jerusalem was a human-like structure: its chambers and furnishings corresponded to the various organs and faculties which make up the human being. While the Holy Temple was the focal point of man’s service of his Creator and the place which most expressed G-d’s presence in our world, the objective of the Temple service was that man apply the awareness and experience of the divine which pervaded the Holy Temple to all aspects of his daily life. The services performed in the Temple fall under two general categories: the “inner services” in the Temple proper, and the “outer services” in the Temple courtyard. On the individual level, this translates into the two basic domains of human endeavor: (a) a person’s inner spiritual development, and (b), the more external areas of his life - his efforts to refine his Making the Connection material self and his involvements with his fellows and the world about him. Tzav means “Command.” It expresses a command from G-d about the donation of offerings in the Sanctuary, relating A person’s instinctive feeling may be that he ought to work to the general concept of giving charity. But Tzav has also his way from the inside out. First, deal with the internal another meaning: “Connect.” It expresses the idea that needs; then, turn his attention to “outside” matters. G-d’s laws establish a connection between the individual and G-d. But in the Temple, things are done the other way around. The day begins by lighting the fire on the mizbeiach hachitzon, This connection cannot be taken for granted. G-d is Infinite, the “external altar” which stands in the Temple courtyard. In beyond all definitions and categories. In comparison with fact, the “internal altar” and the menorah (candelabra) which G-d the entire cosmos is smaller than a speck of dust; it stand in the Temple’s inner chamber, are to be lighted from is like nothing. But spiritual Yet G-d gives Torah laws to frail human beings. The very gluttony is no less selfish than the physical sort, and one fact that G-d has issued a command to the person imparts who focuses solely on self-realization and self-fulfillment, is a sense of significance to that person’s life. He or she is now turning his Holy Temple inside out. related to G-d, bonded with Him by a Divine instruction. True, the more one himself possesses, the more he has This connection is there even if the person does not actually to give to others. It is also true that as long as a person is fulfill the instruction. As the Sages put it, “even though he himself lacking in a certain area, it is extremely difficult for sinned, he is a Jew.” The fact that the 613 commands in the him to rectify such a failing in his fellow. Yet the person who does not yet observe them has not lost his role in the system: he has a connection, albeit a negative one.

The next step, of course, is to transform the negative into positive. Our Sages tell us that this is the force of the word “Tzav” at the beginning of the Torah portion: to give us encouragement through the generations. The knowledge that through the commandments of the Torah, we are truly connected with G-d.

14 4 POWERFUL INSIGHTS FROM THE REBBE ON PARSHAS TZAV

Continuous Fire

Parshat Tzav contains the verse: “A continuous fire shall burn on the altar. It shall not be extinguished.” Every element of the Sanctuary and the Temple is not merely part of our people’s spiritual history, but is instead an ongoing dimension of our spiritual lives.

The altar refers to our hearts, the element of our being involved in the spiritual service of sacrifices which is interpreted as referring to our efforts to draw close to G-d. Within our hearts, a flame must continually burn. Our service of G-d must not be cold and cerebral. Instead, it should be ablaze with fire and energy. Our religious life should continuously vibrate with vitality and vigor.

The above concepts relate to one of the lessons of the recently celebrated Purim holiday. Haman came Simple Ashes from the nation of Amalek, the arch-enemy of the Jewish people. The decree of Amalek’s descendant, This week’s Torah reading begins with the command to Haman, was directed at annihilating the Jewish people remove the ashes from the altar. At night, the limbs of the physically, but there was also a spiritual element to it. sacrifices would be offered on the altar and in the morning, Had a Jew been willing to reject his Judaism, Haman the priests would take the ashes from the altar and bring would have left him alone. There were priests chosen to offer animal sacrifices and others chosen to bring the incense offering. And there were How did Mordechai respond to threat of annihilation? still others who were given the task of cleaning the ashes He aroused the Jews and awakened their spiritual from the altar. vitality. Our Sages relate that at that time, the Jewish people renewed the commitment they made at the Our Sages emphasize that this was a lesser service, so Giving of the Torah. At Sinai, our people acted rashly, much so that it could not be performed while wearing the promising “We will do” before “We will listen.” And at ordinary priestly garments, but instead required special, less the time of Purim, they reaffirmed that commitment, dignified robes. Nevertheless, those priests also performed showing a dedication to their heritage unfettered by their jobs eagerly. They were serving G-d in the Temple. It the limits of logic. did not matter how they were serving Him. As long as they were serving Him, they were happy.

Outside of the Temple, G-d’s presence is not overtly revealed. Thus we do not have the same inspiration to carry out His service. But that is only because we are unaware. From His perspective, our service is cherished whether we are aware of the powerful spiritual effects it produces or not.

R. Sholom Dovber (the Rebbe Rashab) would say: “Even if G-d had commanded us to chop wood — i.e., an activity that appears to have no spiritual content — we would do so happily.”

24 Dear Community Family,

As the entire world is filled with anxiety, not being able to plan for anything in the immediate future as this continuing state of uncertainty envelops all of us, most of us, thank G-d, are safe in our homes with enough provisions to take us through these very challenging moments.

At the same time, we must not forget our brothers and sisters who look with bated breath for our critical assistance that we give them each year, particularly for their Passover needs.

The extraordinary mitzvah of Tzedakah is accelerated manifold when it comes to supplying each person with the fundamental basic needs for their Passover, which include Passover foods and other critical needs. Each year we make sure that more than 100 families receive their necessary assistance. Let us not forget them at this time as we beseech our Father in Heaven to remember us for complete health and peace of mind and soul in every way.

The importance of Maos Chittim is highlighted in the excerpt below of one of the Rebbe’s letters, and I thought it very appropriate to share it with you:

“The Mitzvah of Ma’os Chittim is, of course, one of the highest forms of Tzedoko, and it will stand you in good stead. Your active share in it gives me the certain hope that also in all other Mitzvoth you show the same degree of devotion, and that you fulfill them with Hiddur and with joy.

May G d bless you with much success in your study of the Torah and the observance of the Mitzvoth, so that you will always be a source of true Yiddish Nachas to Parents and teachers, and a source of blessings to your near and dear ones.

With blessing, M. Schneerson”

Jewishness teaches that life is a series of steps that together connect to make for a successful journey. As long as our goal is clear, and our movement constantly forward and upward, we will achieve our intended purpose. Even an occasional setback must be perceived as the step backwards to make the big leap forward.

Let us utilize the consistent daily growth this month as the foundation for ongoing growth and fulfillment all year long.

With Torah Greetings and Blessings for a happy and Kosher Passover,

Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar
