The Genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry
The genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry With the recent migration to Australia of the Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758)), (see Creature Feature this issue), I thought it might be timely to take a look at the genus worldwide. It must be noted that due to a misidentification A. terpsicore had long been known as A. violae and many references in the literature and on the web refer to it as A. violae. As with much of the Lepidoptera the genus is in a state of flux, and has long been split into the subgenera Acraea (Acraea) and Acraea (Actinote). The genus is placed in the tribe Acraeini and until Harvey (1991) placed it in the subfamily Heliconiinae it was listed in the subfamily Acraeinae. Recent molecular work has made changes and a current listing of the tribe Acraeini, by Niklas Wahlberg, is available at http://www.nymphalidae.net/Classification/Acraeini.htm. It shows members of the old subgenus Acraea (Actinote) being placed in the genus Actinote, and the old subgenus Acraea (Acraea) becoming the genus Acraea with a subgenus Acraea (Bematistes). It also lists several Acraea as unplaced. This may further change as some believe the subgenus Acraea (Bematistes) will move to the genus Bematistes. The genus is primarily Afrotropical with only four species occurring outside this region, these being, Acraea andromacha (Fig. 1) A. meyeri (Fig. 10) A. moluccana and A. terpsicore. A fifth species the Yellow Coster Acraea (Actinote) issoria is now referred to the genus Actinote. Like many of the Nymphalidae the larvae feed on plants which contain cyanogens making the larvae and adults poisonous to predators. -

The Butterfly Fauna of Three Varying Habitats in South Western Nigeria

Olaleru Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria *Email of corresponding Author: [email protected] or [email protected] ABSTRACT Species diversity and abundance of butterflies were investigated at three (3) locations; Ajebo, Ogun State, Odongunyan Farm Settlement, Ikorodu and Hortico Gardens, Ipaja, Lagos using sweep nets and transects method of sampling. Biodiversity indices were calculated using Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, Simpson’s and Equitability indices. A total of 1105 butterflies belonging to 11 genera and 4 families were identified from the 3 sampled sites. Butterflies belonging to the family Nymphalidae were the most abundant, accounting for 70.6% of the total butterflies collected in all locations and seasons. Four species Danaus chrysippus, Acraea serena, Melanargia galathea (Nymphalidae) and Eurema sp. (Pieridae) were found in the three sites. Acraea (200), Danaus (140), Melanargia (129) (all in the family Nymphalidae) were the most abundant butterfly genera found in the study sites. Ajebo had the least diversity of butterflies in all the two seasons, while Hortico Gardens, Ipaja had the highest. Odongunyan farm land was the most equitable (j = 1.09) of the three sampled sites. Butterfly species were documented from June to September, 2020 by following Standard Methods. A total of 56 butterfly species belonging to 05 different families were recorded. Further, Family Nymphalidae records highest number of Butterfly species (39.29 %), followed by Pieridae (23.21%), Lycaenidae (21.43%) and Papilionidae (10.71%) families. Least number of Butterfly species contributed by family Hesperiidae (5.36%). These Butterflies were further classified into Common (77%) and Rare (23%) based on Abundance status. Interestingly, Butterfly species viz., Euploea core, Hypolimnas misippus, Cepora nerissa, Castalius rosimon and Pachliopta hector which are listed in Schedule I, II and IV of Indian Wildlife Protection Act (IWPA), 1972 were documented from the study area. Thus, the present study instigates further research on various aspects on Butterfly species during different seasons at Mysuru, Karnataka which is important from the Conservation point of view. Until now, hues as dynamic as those adorning the Apatura Emperor butterflies have 11 never been encountered in the painting world. Unlike and unmatched by the chemical pigments 12 traditionally found on the painter’s palette, the Emperor’s wings are studded with strongly 13 reflecting iridescent scales that are structured like those of the iconic morpho butterflies. The 14 scale ridges act as diffractive multilayers, giving rise to narrow-band reflectance spectra. All 15 scales together create a vividly purple iridescent wing colouration that is observed within a 16 narrow angular range only. Recently, synthetic structures analogous to the multilayer reflectors 17 found on butterfly wings have been developed, referred to as effect pigments. Artists can obtain 18 vital clues on how to adapt and adopt these challenging new materials for painting, by tracing the 19 origin of biomimetics back to the ancient concept of mimesis and building on the knowledge 20 accumulated by optical studies. -
