This past year has tugged on our hearts as a nation and as a city. As unrest was taking place all across our nation our trust and respect felt questioned. Had we lost our way from following God’s call to love our neighbor as ourselves? Then the ambush of our Dallas Police Officers took place last summer. What a tragic and horrific event. Not only to Dallas but to our nation as a whole. Racial lines were being drawn more than ever. Parents were worried about the safety of their children and families. But what I saw was an inflection point in time, where good could emerge from evil. The day after the ambush our city leadership and churches came together in unity to provide healing and comfort to our city in Thanksgiving Square. Prayer vigils took place across our city. Pastors from churches of different ethnicities united together to reject racism and hatred while drawing closer towards love and unity. The city pulled together to support our police department as the world watched those who lost their lives be buried. Tears of support and love were shown by President Barack Obama, Mayor Mike Rawlings, Police Chief David Brown and others as we came together as one united body. For decades we have fought against racism and injustice. I believe the Church is poised to reclaim our city and our country. We are ready to unify our forces and work together as “One Church”. This year’s theme for Movement Day Greater Dallas is, “Greater Dallas Unity through Racial Reconciliation”. We are pleased to have a number of speakers and presenters sharing their stories and perspectives about racial reconciliation and unity, including our keynote speaker Bishop Claude Alexander, Senior Pastor from The Park Church in Charlotte, NC. We will also be enriched in the Spirit through music ministry from Keith and Kristyn Getty. My hope is that the messages you hear today will resonate with your heart; words which you’ll take back to your local church community and work in partnership with MDGD to bring catalytic change to our city. Our plans in 2017 are to search out the best programs in place today and bring our churches together in a unified approach to work hand-in-hand to move the needle forward on: • City-Wide Spiritual Transformation; • Re-igniting our Schools and Educational opportunities; • And Providing Job Creation to those most in need. Dr. Jeff Warren stated, “a city-wide gospel movement takes place when churches decide not to silo their ministries and isolate themselves from other believers, especially across racial and economic lines and come together with open hearts and hand.” We are so proud to have you joining with us today, and we look forward to working closely with you throughout the year to help unify our church. The Movement has begun. Where do you engage and become part of the solution? Sincerely, DAVID MARK ALEXANDER Executive Director, Movement Day Greater Dallas 5 MICHAEL S. RAWLINGS Mayor Dallas, TX Mike came to Dallas in 1976 with a couple hundred dollars in his pocket and plans to work as a radio reporter. He didn’t think he’d stay long. But over the next four decades, Rawlings proved that Dallas is truly a city of opportunity. Mayor Rawlings decided in early 2011 to run for Dallas Mayor on a platform that highlighted southern Dallas as the city’s greatest untapped resource. Following his June 2011 election, he launched GrowSouth, his signature initiative to spur economic development south of the dallascityhall.com Trinity River. Mayor Rawlings was re-elected to a second four-year term in May 2015. Rawlings and his wife, Micki, live in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of North Dallas. 11 Emcee BRENDA TEELE Business Relationship Manager, Federal Title, Inc.
