This past year has tugged on our hearts as a nation and as a city. As unrest was taking place all across our nation our trust and respect felt questioned. Had we lost our way from following God’s call to love our neighbor as ourselves? Then the ambush of our Dallas Police Officers took place last summer. What a tragic and horrific event. Not only to Dallas but to our nation as a whole. Racial lines were being drawn more than ever. Parents were worried about the safety of their children and families. But what I saw was an inflection point in time, where good could emerge from evil. The day after the ambush our city leadership and churches came together in unity to provide healing and comfort to our city in Thanksgiving Square. Prayer vigils took place across our city. Pastors from churches of different ethnicities united together to reject racism and hatred while drawing closer towards love and unity. The city pulled together to support our police department as the world watched those who lost their lives be buried. Tears of support and love were shown by President Barack Obama, Mayor Mike Rawlings, Police Chief David Brown and others as we came together as one united body. For decades we have fought against racism and injustice. I believe the Church is poised to reclaim our city and our country. We are ready to unify our forces and work together as “One Church”. This year’s theme for Movement Day Greater Dallas is, “Greater Dallas Unity through Racial Reconciliation”. We are pleased to have a number of speakers and presenters sharing their stories and perspectives about racial reconciliation and unity, including our keynote speaker Bishop Claude Alexander, Senior Pastor from The Park Church in Charlotte, NC. We will also be enriched in the Spirit through music ministry from Keith and Kristyn Getty. My hope is that the messages you hear today will resonate with your heart; words which you’ll take back to your local church community and work in partnership with MDGD to bring catalytic change to our city. Our plans in 2017 are to search out the best programs in place today and bring our churches together in a unified approach to work hand-in-hand to move the needle forward on: • City-Wide Spiritual Transformation; • Re-igniting our Schools and Educational opportunities; • And Providing Job Creation to those most in need. Dr. Jeff Warren stated, “a city-wide gospel movement takes place when churches decide not to silo their ministries and isolate themselves from other believers, especially across racial and economic lines and come together with open hearts and hand.” We are so proud to have you joining with us today, and we look forward to working closely with you throughout the year to help unify our church. The Movement has begun. Where do you engage and become part of the solution? Sincerely, DAVID MARK ALEXANDER Executive Director, Movement Day Greater Dallas 5 MICHAEL S. RAWLINGS Mayor of Dallas February 2017 Greetings, As Mayor of Dallas, it is my pleasure to welcome the attendees of the 4th Annual Movement Day Greater Dallas Conference. This year’s theme of “Greater Dallas Unity through Racial Reconciliation” is timely, and we thank faith and civic leaders for leading this conversation. I hope that you leave this conference more excited and empowered to make a positive impact in our city. As you descend upon Dallas, I encourage each of you to enjoy our beautiful city and its diversity of things to see and do. I hope that you will discover why we love to call Dallas home. On behalf of the citizens of Dallas, we wish you the best for a memorable, joyous and successful event. Best regards, Michael S. • From Our Rector, the Rev. Dr. Libby Gibson
1 November-December 2016 From our Rector, the Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the Rev. Dr. Libby Gibson election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Book of Common Prayer p. 822 Unlike so many children in the United States, I had the privilege of attending an excellent high school, and I was blessed with the support of parents who valued cross-cultural experiences.1 Over spring break of my junior year, I traveled with a group to the Soviet Union where we visited historic sites in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and had the chance to meet Russian teenagers and their teachers. This was the era of perestroika and glasnost, of reformation and openness within the Communist party, which would lead to the dissolution of the Soviet Union a mere two years later. The students were very eager to talk with us about living in the United States, and after discussing Duran Duran, U2, and Levi’s, a young man asked, “What is it like to vote?” Since none of us were 18, and fairly few of us had memories of 4 going to the polls with our parents, we mumbled and Parish Newsletter fumbled an answer. The Russian teenagers were aghast that November – December 2016 we were so ignorant and seemingly uninterested in voting when a democratic election was one of their greatest dreams.

HYMNS for the CHRISTIAN LIFE NOVEMBER 3, 2013 Evening worship with KEITH & KRISTYN GETTY 1 Dear Church Family and Guests, It is a great pleasure to have you in worship and to experience the 2013 tour of Keith and Kristyn Getty: Hymns for the Christian Life. We welcome visitors in the love of Christ and pray that you will feel at home on our campus. The influence of the Gettys on church music in this century has been tremendous. With the release of their first hymn, “In Christ Alone,” they have continued to create hymns that I believe will have an impact on many generations to come. As a lifelong church musician, I appreciate their artistry, their faith, and their commitment to glorifying God with their gifts and utilizing them in such an excellent way. I hope you are richly blessed by the music and the wonderful affirmation of Christ’s love for us. We pray that this worship service at Second Presbyterian Church is a testimony of God’s work among us and that you will feel welcome and embraced. In Christ, Dr. Gabriel C. Session 13 Session 13 The Praises of God’s People THEOLOGICAL THEME: Worship is bringing glory to God for His Word, His works, and His promise. We are part of a generation that has largely forgotten how to pray and sing the psalms. Voices from Perhaps for the first time in all of church history, the Church the psalms are no longer the bedrock for our “The Psalms are the steady, individual devotion or corporate worship. This sustained subcurrent of 1 puts us out of step not only with the rest of church healthy Christian living.” history but with the earliest Christians. The –N. T. Wright apostles quoted more from the Psalms than any other book in the Old Testament. They were steeped in the rhythms and poetry and theology of their people’s prayer book. What are the psalms you are most familiar with? In what settings have you encountered these psalms? How were they used? Date of My Bible Study: ______________________________ 119 © 2016 LifeWay Christian Resources. Permission granted to reproduce and distribute within the license agreement with purchaser. Today we come to a pause in the Old Testament storyline. God’s covenant people wrote the psalms over a long period of time. Many are written by King David, a few come from other kings, one comes to us from Moses, and many are from Asaph. The purpose of the psalms was to recall the mighty acts of God for the people. Some of the psalms focus on praise. Others cry out and lament the evil in this world.

Unit 2 God All Wise 1 Kings, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes Memory Verse And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, –1 Corinthians 1:30 Writers Greg Breazeale (sessions 7-12) is the North Campus pastor at The Austin Stone Community Church. Keith and Kristyn Getty (session 13) are writers of modern hymns that teach Christian doctrine sung in globally-accessible melodies. 64 Session 7 Session 7 Solomon Asks for God’s Wisdom THEOLOGICAL THEME: God’s promise to make His people a light to the nations began to come true during the reign of Solomon, a king whose wisdom came from God. What makes a great leader? We could list many things here: a prestigious education, high intelligence, a proven track record of achievement, a charismatic personality, or the ability to cast vision. These qualities could make a great leader, but they do not guarantee great leadership. In Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman argues that what makes a great leader is not a high IQ or off-the-charts talent. What makes a great leader, he argues, is someone with a high level of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the sum of five skills: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill. 1 Though he sometimes misses the mark in his analysis, Goleman was essentially describing what the Bible calls wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. It’s knowing what to do when, quite frankly, we don’t know what to do.
