There are, he says, ‘no unusual or obsolete words, no hard or uncouth phrases in it, but everything is expressed as clearly and plainly as words can do it’. Of course, Beveridge is emphasising that ‘the meanest person in the congregation...as well as the greatest scholar’ can be edified by the services; but he is also writing as a contemporary of Bishop Sprat who had praised the Royal Society for exacting from its members a ‘close, naked, natural way of speaking ...bringing all things as near the mathematical plainness as they can’1. Probably few now would say that the 1662 Prayer Book contains no unusual or obsolete words—we are three hundred years further away from it than Beveridge—but perhaps even in his day some words were beginning to feel archaic2.

PRAISE FOR SING! “The beauty of this book is how consistent it is with who and what the Gettys have been to the Church over the past decade. Their contribution is not significant because of the extraordinary but the ordinary. They are ordinary Christians who have made an extraordinary impact, not because of their musical or theological credentials, but because of their desire and willingness to devote themselves to the ordinary things. Sing! is an exposition of those ordinary things that have allowed the Gettys to be used by the Lord to bless, encourage, and provoke so many of us not only to ‘sing to the Lord a new song,’ but also to love and appreciate the old ones. May this practical, pastoral, theological, accessible, and delightful book help and bless many. May it encourage us all to Sing!.” Voddie Baucham Jr., dean of Theological Education, African Christian University in Lusaka, Zambia “Here is a book worth buying. Filled with biblical, practical insight that, understood and taken to heart, will revolutionize congrega- tional singing.” Alistair Begg, pastor of Truth for Life Radio and general editor of the Spurgeon Study Bible “Sing! is wonderful! It’s a treasury of lost principles discovered for a new generation of worshippers. Sing! reminds me and my family that God uses music and the Word to transform the world, and that our part in His process of renewing all things is to open our mouths.” Kirk Cameron, film actor and producer “With a rare combination of theological insight, the lessons shaped by years of practical experience, and remarkable readability, this book is simultaneously evocative, informative, and accessible.” D.

  • Easter Sunday & Easter Week: April 12Th – April 18Th
The Benefice of Upper Wensleydale Edition 4 “He is Risen!” ‘Church in the Home’ Easter Sunday & Easter Week: April 12th – April 18th A spring walk in Bainbridge: Heather Cumpstone One morning last week we took Theo out for a walk to get some fresh air and enjoy a brief change of scenery. We passed a grassy verge by the road which was covered in dead foliage and dried long grass; and just as I was complaining that the view was hardly inspiring, Andrew pointed at something. At first I couldn't see it for all the brown twigs and grass that seemed to overwhelm the landscape, but as I moved closer I spotted it. Bursting through all the dead foliage was this small but vibrant yellow flower, very much alive and thriving despite what was going on around it. There is so much hope in this picture! Out of something so bleak and baron came something new and full of colour! It's the very nature of God to bring life where there has been baron wasteland. Remember, the very reason for Jesus coming to the world in the first place: to exchange 'a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair' (Isaiah 61:3). God is in the business of working in difficult seasons and showing his mercy when we're feeling at our most helpless. It wasn't until I got home and tried to make sense of what God had put on my heart, that I remembered the scripture that has been very much on our hearts over the last year..

  • From Our Rector, the Rev. Dr. Libby Gibson
1 November-December 2016 From our Rector, the Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the Rev. Dr. Libby Gibson election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Book of Common Prayer p. 822 Unlike so many children in the United States, I had the privilege of attending an excellent high school, and I was blessed with the support of parents who valued cross-cultural experiences.1 Over spring break of my junior year, I traveled with a group to the Soviet Union where we visited historic sites in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and had the chance to meet Russian teenagers and their teachers. This was the era of perestroika and glasnost, of reformation and openness within the Communist party, which would lead to the dissolution of the Soviet Union a mere two years later. The students were very eager to talk with us about living in the United States, and after discussing Duran Duran, U2, and Levi’s, a young man asked, “What is it like to vote?” Since none of us were 18, and fairly few of us had memories of 4 going to the polls with our parents, we mumbled and Parish Newsletter fumbled an answer. The Russian teenagers were aghast that November – December 2016 we were so ignorant and seemingly uninterested in voting when a democratic election was one of their greatest dreams.

Church of the Holy Spirit Manse Road, Mossley The Dove Magazine November/December 2020 Edition Parish website www.mossley.org (Mossley Parish is a registered charity, NIC103262) From the Rectory Study I like the music of Keith and Kristyn Getty. Many of you will have heard of them and may even be familiar with some of their songs. Perhaps you were, in the pre-COVID-19 days, able to attend one of their concerts. One of their songs is a real favourite of mine and it is not just my favourite! In 2013 Songs of Praise conducted a nationwide survey. Tens of thousands of people voted for their favourite hymn and from a list of one hundred hymns In Christ Alone came in second (How Great Thou Art was the nation’s favourite). This beautiful piece of music was written in 2001 by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend and is widely regarded to be a wonderful hymn of confidence. The opening verse of In Christ Alone is profound. In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand. This year, as we journey towards Christmas, everything will look somewhat different because of the COVID-19 restrictions. The Christmas parties will not be happening as they did last year, increased numbers of people will be buying gifts online, and even our family gatherings may be impacted.
