  • IMAGERY and the INTERPRETATIVE CANONIC POWER of the AUDIENCE in the MUSIC of STAR WARS Andrew Filmer, Sanjiv Indran, and Tan Mei Ying
IMAGERY AND THE INTERPRETATIVE CANONIC POWER OF THE AUDIENCE IN THE MUSIC OF STAR WARS Andrew Filmer, Sanjiv Indran, and Tan Mei Ying Abstract The musical legacy of Star Wars over the past forty years has a distinct place in popular culture, not only in record sales and concerts, but also in connections to a variety of commercial offerings unrelated to the narrative of the films. This study looks at the composition of Star Wars music from multiple angles: how John Williams used the strategies of Wagner and Berlioz to bring characters to musical life, the various parties involved in assigning meaning to melodies, how marketing campaigns become involved in this process, and the role of the audience in determining interpretations. This research continues on the path set forward by the likes of James Buhler and Irena Paulus in analyzing the placement of motives and themes within the narrative of the films. This research also proceeds in a new direction, applying the same methodology to related commercials endorsed within the franchise, with the supplementary support of a survey, to assess the audience’s reception of the motives and themes under study. A key finding of this study is that the perceived meanings of music by an audience may differ from the original intent of the composer. This by itself is common, but what makes Star Wars music distinctive is that it spans decades, and external forces – from audiences to brands jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon – have influenced soundtracks for later films. Essentially, this underlines how the author is not the only actor in the process of defining authenticity, and how an audience – simply through perception and reception – affects the path in which musical composition evolves.

  • “May the Fourth Be with You”: Star Wars Day, the Mass Media and a Vernacular Hybrid Fan-Holiday
77 • Articles • “May the Fourth Be With You”: Star Wars Day, the Mass Media and a Vernacular Hybrid Fan-Holiday JARED LEE SCHMIDT University of Wisconsin W Abstract: For many Star Wars fans, May 4th is a holiday. Ideas and concepts derived from the fandom about this unofficial, fan-created holiday, are not only adapted from the institution and transmitted via memes to create a vernacular hybrid, but they can also be re-appropriated by the institution. Through examining a series of YouTube videos posted by a Dallas based television news station in celebration of Star Wars Day, this study argues that the influence of fandom and memes as vernacular expressions can be utilized to exert influence on both fans and institutions through a set of complicated relations. On May 4th, 2015, WFAA, a Dallas, Texas based news station, published a series of eleven videos to their YouTube channel parodying a “merger” with the Empire from Star Wars. Ranging in length from 30s to 1m07s, each episode of “WFAA Wars” creates a “what-if?” scenario of working with characters from the Star Wars universe. How would Stormtroopers fix a news van’s engine? What is it like to work at an office with a Wookiee? Would Jedi make good journalists? What would it be like to have Darth Vader manage a news station? This parody series was created as part of WFAA’s celebration of Star Wars Day, also known as, “May the 4th.” Star Wars Day, however, is rooted deeply in the vernacular practices of fans utilizing digital technology and web-based communities.

  • Leitmotif in Star Wars Williams’ Use of Leitmotif and Wagnerian Techniques in the Star Wars Saga
Leitmotif in Star Wars Williams’ Use of Leitmotif and Wagnerian Techniques in the Star Wars Saga Ellen Packer 4/28/2014 1 Leitmotif in Star Wars In John Williams’ film score for the initial Star Wars trilogy, Williams created multiple leitmotivs that repeat throughout the trilogy. In the manner of a Wagner opera, Williams repeats and varies these musical ideas according to the dramatic situation at hand. In the essay I plan to identify and analyze five of the major motives used by Williams throughout Episodes IV, V, and VI. More particularly, I will discuss Williams’ variation techniques used with these leitmotivs as various characters and ideas develop throughout the work. According The New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, a leitmotiv is “a theme, or other coherent musical idea, clearly defined as to retain its identity if modified on subsequent appearances, whose purpose is to represent or symbolize a person, object, place, idea, state of mind, supernatural force, or any other ingredient in a dramatic work, usually operatic but also vocal, choral, or instrumental.” The term was first used to describe the 1871 opera, Carl Maria von Weber in seinen Werken, but Richard Wagner was the first to legitimize the technique as a significant symphonic developmental device. The New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians continues in its description of leitmotif with: “With the weakening of the closed form of the da capo aria, greater importance began to pass to other forms, such as arioso, recitative and scene; and the association of motifs with characters and events began now to provide not only a useful system of illustration but, gradually, by the means of applying formal control through quasi-symphonic techniques.” Richard Wagner, best known for his opera works, rose to fame from the mid to late 1800’s.

  • Does Transmedia Started with Film? Dördüncü Kuvvet
Erzurum, F. (2019). Does Transmedia Started with Film? Dördüncü Kuvvet. 2 (1). 32-42. DOES TRANSMEDİA STARTED WİTH FİLM? 1 Funda ERZURUM Abstract There is no one to be unimpressed by a well-told story. Stories can change even the most rigid, most stereotypical minds of people because their logic resistance "wanders around" the ego walls. We're witnessing is the emergence of a new form of narrative that’s native to the Internet. Told through many media at once in a nonlinear fashion, these new narratives encourage us not merely to watch but to participate, often engaging us in the same way that games do. Star Wars stands in a different place in content creation and marketing, it is possible to encounter all kinds of content in film’s official website. From the teaser series to fragments, interviews, comic books, art works by fans, events, games, and applications, there's a lot of content here, and more and more content continues to grow and expand. From the second and all subsequent films, we are given glimpses of different corners of the Star Wars universe on screen precisely so that material can be mined and developed through these other platforms. And these other creative developments sustained audience engagement across the long years. Transmedia storytelling , maybe, the end of a narration with a precise narrations with the beginning and the end. Star Wars, is a good example of transmedia narration. In this study Star Wars will be examined with it’s transmedia storytelling activities. The answer of the “Does Transmedia Started with Film?” will be searched by taking the Star Wars to the center of the study.
