So what does the Lord Jesus give to us? Well, we give Him the full weight of our sins—and He gives us a completed payment for sin, and daily forgiveness. That’s the cross, and His daily intercession. And then more: We also give Him our insufficiency and inability—and He gives us, not only a perfect obedience (righteousness), but also the daily power to obey and please God. That’s His perfect life and the Holy Spirit, whom He has earned the right to send to us. He Himself picked up the Old For though I preach Testament Law—the heavy yoke—and He put it on the gospel, I have His shoulders. However, the Board was not interested in discussing De Cock’s biblical and confessional arguments, or even to allow him to give any defense for his actions. Realizing that this was the case, De Cock refused to sign and asked for and received permission to write out his own copy of the pledge and went home.

Later that summer, the General Synod, at its meeting on July 16, 1834, ratified De Cock’s deposition from his office as minister of the Gospel. The synod had given him six months to consider recanting. If he did not recant he would be permanently deposed from the ministry.

This action of the Reformed Church boards, while refusing to discuss the dogmatic and confessional matters brought forward by De Cock, forced him to begin thinking of separation as a way to bring the Church he loved back to her biblical and confessional foundation. Even at this point in the process of appeal, De Cock did not take any deliberate steps toward secession. He was resolved to test every avenue of appeal open to him. His intention was to write to the Dutch king and to the synodical Committee. However, things did not happen as he had planned. Matters progressed more quickly toward secession as a result of the visit of Rev. Hendrik Peter Scholte.

To be continued.

Preachers are called to make the truth that for three years he worked in Ephesus and “ceased of God’s word plain: the two ways, either the way of faith not to warn every one night and day with tears” (v. 31). and life or the way of unbelief and death. There is the In 2 Corinthians 5:20, he testifies, “We pray [implore] narrow way to eternal life and the broad way to eternal you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” In view destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). Jesus Himself forewarns of the last judgment, Paul says in the same chapter, us that many will follow the broad way and will not follow “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade the narrow way.
