God has shown all of us at Norwalk Catholic School/St. Paul High that He keeps us in His loving arms. Christ has no hands but ours in this world and Christ has been working through our Flyer Family to accomplish great things. Warren C. Whitney Complex at Contractors Stadium (image on page 2) Whitney Field has been a fixture for local sports for decades, home to the St. Paul Flyers and to the Norwalk Truckers. Norwalk is also the home to many highway and industrial contractors, known throughout the Midwest for their quality and unique capabilities -- and also known for their extraordinary generosity when there is a need. When it came time to refurbish Whitney Field, the Norwalk community donated more than $1 million towards the project. Fisher-Titus Medical Center paid for a handsome new track. But with a $700,000 shortfall, Norwalk area contractors generously stepped up to give the difference in donated materials, labor and equipment. The completion of Contractors Stadium is a true story of a community coming together on a project that will be shared for decades to come. 1:1 Google Chromebooks (image on page 27) NCS made a commitment last spring to open up our buildings this fall for 5 day a week in- person learning. We knew with that commitment we needed to upgrade our technology immediately. With the support of our school’s community, we have been able to answer the technology needs so that our teachers and students could continue to excel at NCS. Our original goal of providing Chromebooks to students in grades 7-12 was met due to a grant opportunity and your generosity. We extended that goal in hopes of providing Chromebooks to students in grades 4-6. We made a final push for donations that allowed us to provide Chromebooks for ALL students in grades K through 12. Our Flyer Family answered the call again. Our teachers went above and beyond to become Google Certified so they could integrate the technology effectively and efficiently in our classrooms for our students. Together we are FEATURE STORIES SOARING to New Heights! New Restrooms Grades 1st-3rd (image on page 29) Welcome Back A major capital improvement project was also undertaken this past summer. With the SOARING to New Heights campaign we were able to rebuild restrooms in the Annex building that houses 4 1st through 3rd grade as well as the Monroe Street Gym. This much needed upgrade allows us to provide ADA compliant restrooms for our students as well as for guests watching games in the gym. From Student Thank you for allowing Christ to work through you and providing much needed support to our to Teacher school. We truly have abundant blessings here at Norwalk Catholic School. As you read through 8 this magazine you will see the great works happening today, catch up with former classmates in our Peeking at Paulites, and review our annual report. God is good! Class of 2020 Martin Linder, President 9 15 Annual Report Fall 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 3 We Set a Big Goal to reopen with COVID19: When school closed on March 13, we learned much about the limitations of remote only learning. After 6 months of separation, we knew what goal to set for fall: To maintain, as much as safely possible, a face-to-face, in-person, learning experience in the classroom so as to experience more fully our Catholic faith while ensuring a healthy environment for students and staff. The intent was to welcome students back, 5 days per week for in-person learning. Our purpose was focused. Purpose of reopening: We believe in order to best meet our mission of Developing Disciples of Christ, Promoting Academic Excellence, and Fostering a Respectful Community, we need to be together as much as possible with our students. This belief is rooted in both faith and science. Faith: Catholics are a social people, a communal people, a faith community with the Eucharistic celebration as the pinnacle of our Jacqui Mullins, 4th Grade Teacher: religious traditions. This is all accomplished through being together, face-to-face. I feel 110% safe being back. I have loved getting Science: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidance clearly outlined the benefits of in-person learning vs. the unintended to see students’ faces even though they are negative outcomes of prolonged absences from school on students’ masked. They have really been a joy and I cannot learning, and overall student well-being. We would use the “Swiss Cheese” approach stacking the recommended safety practices -- wait to spend the rest of the year with them. wearing masks, washing your hands, or social distancing – to help us protect ourselves and others, and reduce the spread of the virus. I am so grateful for our amazing staff for making With God’s grace, our reopening has been a great success. We give this happen, and getting us back into the school. thanks for the many hours of research, planning and implementation by our persevering administration and amazing staff. The commitment of I could tell the kids were so excited and so happy our NCS families and students has also contributed to the successful five day in-person learning model that has been achieved. Here are to be back. thoughts from our staff: 4 Flyer Pride Magazine | Fall 2020 Sr. Carolyn Schaffer, 4th grade teacher: "It seemed daunting but I was up for the challenge. This truly was a whole different scenario in the life of a teacher. We couldn't climb the mountain alone. Administration from school president, Mr. Linder on down had done their homework. Their tireless efforts through the summer showed me how much they cared that students have the opportunity to return. I continue to thank God! Together we will make a difference in these young lives and show that everything is possible if we rely on each other and our awesome God!" Hannah Wilde, 3rd grade teacher: Back to school season is AMAZING. The kids and staff are so excited to be back. Everyone has been so respectful about taking care of each other. The kids have positive attitudes and so do staff. It is a pleasure to be back. I am so Lori Matlack, Classroom Aide and Mom: "It has become very excited to have students in the classroom. I feel that education is obvious that every aspect of our school day was analyzed and pulled meant to be in person and students need to collaborate. apart to create a new plan. When this much effort goes into a plan, it creates confidence for the staff and comfort for the students. I am thrilled to be back and to see the students. I am very comfortable having my own three daughters walk the halls and be in the classrooms at St. Paul." Sr. Marcia Kiser: Our students are full of energy and conversation about many topics. They are sharing joy and smiles despite the masks. The building is alive. Great place to spend the day. Fall 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 5 Mary Krystowski Congratulations to Mrs. Mary Krystowski on her retirement! She finished her 24th year at St. Paul High School as the Theology Teacher for grades 10 and 12. Her last 4 days with her students for in-person learning was spent with the SPH Class of 2020 at their Kairos Retreat! During her time at SPH , she taught Health and Psychology and Sociology over the years as well. She led countless retreats during those years and encouraged students to participate in extra-curricular activities throughout the Diocese including the YES Community Service Projects, Teens Encounter Christ, Heartland Youth Gatherings and Diocesan Youth Gatherings, just to name a few. Mrs. K, as she is most known as, didn’t just take students on retreats, she planned, strategized and executed them well. She jumped into these activities with everyone else and participated too. She was known to take practical jokes like a champ! “When Mary Krystowski was hired as a theology teacher, it was with the expectation that she would add a level of professionalism and a historical perspective to religion classes. In addition, the expectation existed that all students and staff would continue on the path of living their Faith. Mary took that expectation and made it a real commitment. Mary worked to make the theology department a top notch program by coupling theology with everyday life. She was a wonderful role model for her students and made sure they understood their Faith while living it,” said Dennis Doughty. Debra Sevit Congratulations to Mrs. Debra (Schlotterer) Sevit on her retirement. After 31 years in the classroom, Mrs. Sevit has closed the gradebook for the last time. Mrs. Sevit has been teaching in the Toledo Diocese her entire career. Her first 9 years she taught at St.
