2 Flyer Pride Magazine | Fall 2020 Spring 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 3 Flyer Family, As this past school year unfolded it became apparent we are in extraordinary times. God has shown all of us at Norwalk Catholic School/St. Paul High that He keeps us in His loving arms. Christ has no hands but ours in this world and Christ has been working through our Flyer Family to accomplish great things. Warren C. Whitney Complex at Contractors Stadium (image on page 2) Whitney Field has been a fixture for local sports for decades, home to the St. Paul Flyers and to the Norwalk Truckers. Norwalk is also the home to many highway and industrial contractors, known throughout the Midwest for their quality and unique capabilities -- and also known for their extraordinary generosity when there is a need. When it came time to refurbish Whitney Field, the Norwalk community donated more than $1 million towards the project. Fisher-Titus Medical Center paid for a handsome new track. But with a $700,000 shortfall, Norwalk area contractors generously stepped up to give the difference in donated materials, labor and equipment. The completion of Contractors Stadium is a true story of a community coming together on a project that will be shared for decades to come. 1:1 Google Chromebooks (image on page 27) NCS made a commitment last spring to open up our buildings this fall for 5 day a week in- person learning. We knew with that commitment we needed to upgrade our technology immediately. With the support of our school’s community, we have been able to answer the technology needs so that our teachers and students could continue to excel at NCS. Our original goal of providing Chromebooks to students in grades 7-12 was met due to a grant opportunity and your generosity. We extended that goal in hopes of providing Chromebooks to students in grades 4-6. We made a final push for donations that allowed us to provide Chromebooks for ALL students in grades K through 12. Our Flyer Family answered the call again. Our teachers went above and beyond to become Google Certified so they could integrate the technology effectively and efficiently in our classrooms for our students. Together we are FEATURE STORIES SOARING to New Heights! New Restrooms Grades 1st-3rd (image on page 29) Welcome Back A major capital improvement project was also undertaken this past summer. With the SOARING to New Heights campaign we were able to rebuild restrooms in the Annex building that houses 4 1st through 3rd grade as well as the Monroe Street Gym. This much needed upgrade allows us to provide ADA compliant restrooms for our students as well as for guests watching games in the gym. From Student Thank you for allowing Christ to work through you and providing much needed support to our to Teacher school. We truly have abundant blessings here at Norwalk Catholic School. As you read through 8 this magazine you will see the great works happening today, catch up with former classmates in our Peeking at Paulites, and review our annual report. God is good! Fall 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 3 We Set a Big Goal to reopen with COVID19: When school closed on March 13, we learned much about the limitations of remote only learning. After 6 months of separation, we knew what goal to set for fall: To maintain, as much as safely possible, a face-to-face, in-person, learning experience in the classroom so as to experience more fully our Catholic faith while ensuring a healthy environment for students and staff. The intent was to welcome students back, 5 days per week for in-person learning. Our purpose was focused. Purpose of reopening: We believe in order to best meet our mission of Developing Disciples of Christ, Promoting Academic Excellence, and Fostering a Respectful Community, we need to be together as much as possible with our students. This belief is rooted in both faith and science. Faith: Catholics are a social people, a communal people, a faith community with the Eucharistic celebration as the pinnacle of our Jacqui Mullins, 4th Grade Teacher: religious traditions. This is all accomplished through being together, face-to-face. I feel 110% safe being back. I have loved getting Science: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidance clearly outlined the benefits of in-person learning vs. the unintended to see students’ faces even though they are negative outcomes of prolonged absences from school on students’ masked. They have really been a joy and I cannot learning, and overall student well-being. We would use the “Swiss Cheese” approach stacking the recommended safety practices -- wait to spend the rest of the year with them. wearing masks, washing your hands, or social distancing – to help us protect ourselves and others, and reduce the spread of the virus. I am so grateful for our amazing staff for making With God’s grace, our reopening has been a great success. We give this happen, and getting us back into the school. thanks for the many hours of research, planning and implementation by our persevering administration and amazing staff. The commitment of I could tell the kids were so excited and so happy our NCS families and students has also contributed to the successful five day in-person learning model that has been achieved. Here are to be back. thoughts from our staff:

4 Flyer Pride Magazine | Fall 2020 Sr. Carolyn Schaffer, 4th grade teacher: "It seemed daunting but I was up for the challenge. This truly was a whole different scenario in the life of a teacher. We couldn't climb the mountain alone. Administration from school president, Mr. Linder on down had done their homework. Their tireless efforts through the summer showed me how much they cared that students have the opportunity to return. I continue to thank God! Together we will make a difference in these young lives and show that everything is possible if we rely on each other and our awesome God!" Hannah Wilde, 3rd grade teacher: Back to school season is AMAZING. The kids and staff are so excited to be back. Everyone has been so respectful about taking care of each other. The kids have positive attitudes and so do staff. It is a pleasure to be back. I am so Lori Matlack, Classroom Aide and Mom: "It has become very excited to have students in the classroom. I feel that education is obvious that every aspect of our school day was analyzed and pulled meant to be in person and students need to collaborate. apart to create a new plan. When this much effort goes into a plan, it creates confidence for the staff and comfort for the students. I am thrilled to be back and to see the students. I am very comfortable having my own three daughters walk the halls and be in the classrooms at St. Paul." Sr. Marcia Kiser: Our students are full of energy and conversation about many topics. They are sharing joy and smiles despite the masks. The building is alive. Great place to spend the day.

Fall 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 5 Mary Krystowski Congratulations to Mrs. Mary Krystowski on her retirement! She finished her 24th year at St. Paul High School as the Theology Teacher for grades 10 and 12. Her last 4 days with her students for in-person learning was spent with the SPH Class of 2020 at their Kairos Retreat! During her time at SPH , she taught Health and Psychology and Sociology over the years as well. She led countless retreats during those years and encouraged students to participate in extra-curricular activities throughout the Diocese including the YES Community Service Projects, Teens Encounter Christ, Heartland Youth Gatherings and Diocesan Youth Gatherings, just to name a few. Mrs. K, as she is most known as, didn’t just take students on retreats, she planned, strategized and executed them well. She jumped into these activities with everyone else and participated too. She was known to take practical jokes like a champ! “When Mary Krystowski was hired as a theology teacher, it was with the expectation that she would add a level of professionalism and a historical perspective to religion classes. In addition, the expectation existed that all students and staff would continue on the path of living their Faith. Mary took that expectation and made it a real commitment. Mary worked to make the theology department a top notch program by coupling theology with everyday life. She was a wonderful role model for her students and made sure they understood their Faith while living it,” said Dennis Doughty.

Debra Sevit Congratulations to Mrs. Debra (Schlotterer) Sevit on her retirement. After 31 years in the classroom, Mrs. Sevit has closed the gradebook for the last time. Mrs. Sevit has been teaching in the Toledo Diocese her entire career. Her first 9 years she taught at St. Peter’s Elementary in Huron then joined the elementary teaching staff of Norwalk Catholic School in August of 1998. “Deb is a phenomenal teacher! She represents everything a true Catholic School teacher would be: Deb lives her faith, models this for the children, and goes above and beyond for everyone in her care; she gives her all! Debra is one of the most caring people I know. Her joyous laughter will be missed within our hallways, but she has been a faithful servant of the Lord and we wish her the best as she begins this new chapter in her life,” said Norwalk Catholic School Principal, Melissa Englert. Long time co-teacher of Deb, Amy Weisenberger, went on to say “Not only was she a colleague but a friend. She always had the best interest of the students. We worked diligently to create the NCS history fair. I will greatly miss her.” While at Norwalk Catholic School, Mrs. Sevit taught 6th grade, focusing on the subjects of religion, math and social studies. She would always come to school early and leave late, as she would lead the annual History/Geography Fair, Veterans Mass, Academic Challenge team, elementary Bible study as well as being a member of The Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association Steering Committee. “Deb is an amazing teacher with a kind and generous heart. My own children loved her and have great memories of 6th grade with Mrs. S! Her kindness and compassion will be sorely missed by all of us at NCS. Enjoy your new adventure!!” said Norwalk Catholic School Administrative Assistant, Natalie Livengood.

We wish Mary, Deb, Jim and Brenda well in their retirement and once a Flyer…. Always a Flyer!” If you would like to send a note/card to any of our retirees, please send them to Mrs. Whitehurst in the Junior High/High School Office at 93 E Main St., Norwalk, OH 44857 or to Mrs. Livengood in the Elementary Office at 31 Milan Ave., Norwalk, OH 44857.

6 Flyer Pride Magazine | Fall 2020 Mr. James Swabley James Swabley graduated from SPH in 1967. He returned to his alma mater in 1972 and has worn many hats in his 48 years as teacher. Throughout his service at SPH, he spent most of his time in the Science rooms. He was the technology coordinator for several years bringing the latest and greatest technology into the school which you can imagine changed numerous times throughout the past 4+ decades. Jim was always behind the scenes working on various projects too, even throughout the summer months when most teachers took time off to relax and rejuvenate. You would find him working in his classroom, helping the maintenance personnel with a project or creating something that would help make his co-workers’ jobs easier, like a solid custom-made rolling cart, or installing a keyboard drawer. Dennis Doughty, who taught alongside Mr. Swabley, over saw him as a principal and lastly as the school president, had this to say about Jim, “Jim is one of the most dedicated and involved teachers I have ever experienced. He continually looked for ways to enhance his teaching and utilized all the online resources available to provide a better education. He introduced technology to NCS and made sure SPH was on the cutting edge of technology years before other schools. His commitment to SPH will be missed. He was a great example to students as a gentleman and a teacher.” “I have known Mr. Swabley for over 45 years as my teacher, co-worker, mentor and friend. His knowledge (and eternal search for more) is equaled by his loyalty to his and love for SPH. His wit and dry sense of humor will be missed. And, thanks to him, I can repair the power cords for my appliances (knowledge gained in physics class in 1974)!” said St. Paul High School administrative assistant, Grace Whitehurst.

Mrs. Brenda Careless Congratulations to Brenda (Doughty) Careless on her retirement. She graduated from SPH in 1983. She returned to her alma mater in August of 1988 to start her teaching career. She spent 32 years in the classroom, with over 25 years teaching 4th grade. “Brenda has always gone above and beyond for her students. She will be greatly missed, as she was an integral part of our elementary staff with her dedication to Catholic Education,” said NCS Elementary Principal Melissa Englert. “Brenda has a heart of gold! She truly has a love for NCS Elementary and always wanted the best for her students,” said Norwalk Catholic School Administrative Assistant, Natalie Livengood. Over the years, Brenda taught many students, she led countless class retreats to Put-In-Bay and Kelley’s Island, organized the 4th Grade Ohio History Fair and taught science lessons with Veggie U. She also held the position as SPH Flag Corps Advisor for four years. Brenda was known as the “Copy Machine Savior” from her long time co-teacher, and now fellow retiree Mrs. Lynda Bungard. She went on to say “Brenda was always right there to lend a helping hand to anyone.”

Fall 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 7 Alumni Come Home

Riley Conway, SPH ‘13 I attended the University of Toledo and received a degree in Middle Childhood Education. After graduating from college, I moved to Put-In-Bay where I taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Social Studies and English Language Arts for 3 years. Living on the island was an exciting challenge and a great experience, but I am very excited to be on this side of the lake again. This year at Norwalk Catholic Elementary, I am teaching 6th grade Science and Social Studies. I am thrilled to get to work with the 6th grade class and help with their transition into the Junior High School. I am very happy to be back at NCS and to get to work with some of my previous teachers and meet all the new staff members. NCS is a great community to be part of as a student and as a staff member. I have had a great start to the school year and I am looking forward to the rest of the year. Looking back I think one of my happiest memories at St. Paul’s was cheering my final game at Whitney Field. After four years of cheering, it was great to have all my friends and family together for one final game. My older sister Annie, who also attended St. Paul gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in April, making me an aunt for the first time. My nephew’s name is Noah and he’s the sweetest little boy. I have a dog named Murphy. He is a three year old fluff ball filled with energy. Chris Doughty, SPH ‘09 I attended Bowling Green State University and received a dual major in education. Having just graduated this past spring, I spent the summer on the hunt for a teaching job and am thrilled to now be working at NCS. This year, I am teaching 6th grade Math and Religion. I am excited to be teaching both of these subjects as well as helping to teach the 6th graders how to be leaders in the school building. Since graduating from high school in 2009, I have remained involved in both the wrestling and football programs as a coach at various levels. I have spent the past eleven years developing relationships with the families of Norwalk Catholic School and I am excited for the opportunity to get to know even more of them. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student at NCS. Having the opportunity to represent my school and family when participating in several sports and in the folk group at the high school Masses were some of my favorite memories. I live in Monroeville with my wife, Olivia and our two dogs and cat. In our free time we enjoy going for walks in the woods and working on house projects together. We feel blessed to have so many great friends in the St. Paul community. Sydney Moore, SPH ‘15 I attended Heidelberg University and received a degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduating, I moved to Toledo to teach third grade at Rosary Cathedral Catholic School. Toledo was a beneficial experience that allowed me to grow in my career and my faith. I decided to leave Toledo to be closer to my family and teach in my home community. This year at Norwalk Catholic School, I am teaching 4th grade Handwriting, Social Studies, and Story Writing. I am thrilled to be back and feel a great sense of comfortability and home at NCS. I am very excited to continue my career here. I have so many happy memories at St. Paul that it is difficult to pick just one. I really enjoyed my time as a Student Ambassador. I loved being able to plan and coordinate events, welcome new students, and give tours. In high school, I participated in volleyball, track, and cheer. I loved being a teammate and I have had the opportunity to shift to the role of coach. I currently coach Junior High Volleyball and I am having so much fun being able to share my love of the sport with these girls.

We called our students, as Faithful Flyers, 2019 - 20 to exhibit three Fruits of the Spirit. They were Joy, Kindness, and Self-Control. We did not realize FCEDO and Advancement when we chose these in August 2019, how very much needed those three fruits would be this Office Income COVID-19 year! OH, the Self-Control required! We can’t see our families! NO grandkids! No Mass! No parties or Friends for the Future $ 860,566 reunions. Social distancing – a new term – means no hugs and stay six feet apart. ”Distant” is how FCEDO Endowment $ 160,500 we ALL feel. Kindness is our watchword. I wear a mask for you – you wear one for me. All things Disbursement take longer. I patiently and kindly wait. And Joy! How to feel joy when so alone? And yet there it is. We find Joy in new and unexpected places. A care call. A “Zoom” family game night. My neighbor Endowed Scholarships $ 22,750 gets my groceries. A note in the mail. Facebook Live is a newfound tool! Special Events Income $ 96,799 God so often sends us rainbows amid the storms! And he surely did so here! In March, when SOARING Disbursements $ 60,278 school closed, with all the uncertainty in the world, we decided not to continue as usual with for teacher salaries and Friends for the Future. Instead of the Phonathon, we made 1000 Care Calls to alumni, projects parishioners, parents and supporters. We knew so many were alone and wanted to connect. Instead of joining the World Day of Giving, we had a Month of Caring, gathering and offering Total Office Income $1,200,893 prayers for one another. Yet people responded, knowing our need without our asking. We raised Soaring to New Heights $ 5,409,000 nearly $300,000 in May and June alone, exceeding the Friends for the Future goal. Our Spring Gifts and Pledges Fling went virtual in June with tremendous success. Total advancement/development efforts exceeded $1.2 million! God is so good and our supporters steadfast!!

New Director for Friends for the Future

I am so pleased and we are so blessed to welcome to Stephanie Kluding to our team. She will take on many responsibilities as Director of the Annual Fund and Communications. With the addition of Stephanie and Jenny Ridge taking on more duties, I will be slowing down – just a bit. Stephanie Kluding loves our mission! “When my two oldest children were ready to begin their education, we picked the Early Childhood Center for the convenient before and aftercare of the Flyer Clubhouse. It didn't take long for us to develop a love for the faith, families and staff. During this time, we were also searching for a church to call our own. As our children came home from school each day, sharing what they were learning about God's love, we were led to explore the idea of becoming members of the Catholic faith. Mark and I went through RCIA together and became members of St. Paul Church in 2015. Today, our children, Grace (8th), Gunner (6th) and Blake (Pre4) are ready to begin another school year at Norwalk Catholic School. I have used my professional skills to grow the NCS Book Fair, serve on the FFF Committee, and on various PTO events. I’m excited to be involved in this faith-filled environment on a daily basis, meet new families and contribute to the success of SPH/NCS!

16 Flyer Pride Magazine | Fall 2020 The sacrifices, talents, and gifts of numerous benefactors and gracious individuals allow us to grow our mission at Norwalk Catholic School. We are forever indebted for your generosity and dedicated support.

This report for the 2019-20 school year shows deficit spending, caused by a reduction in income largely due to the pandemic and closing of schools in the areas of tuition collections, mandated services monies, and a reduction of other funding sources. With the virtual Spring Fling and Parent Investment event cancellations, there also was less fundraising income. Unexpected and additional expens- Parishes Investment es were due to the COVID 19 closing, online teaching costs, and some unexpected repair and Trusts, Grants, Annual Fund, maintenance issues. Fall 2020 | Flyer Pride Magazine 33 The FCEDO Endowment Fund was created in 1994. Since that time, over $3 million has been contributed to the school’s annual budget. What an amazing blessing to Norwalk Catholic School! These funds have provided much needed improvements and enhancements for the school – upgrading our facilities, purchasing equipment, enhancing the education provided. A major goal of the FCEDO Board has been to provide just wages for our employees. With the Soaring campaign, we are also accomplishing that. Equally important is to keep tuition affordable for our families. To help accomplish this, the Endowment Named Endowed Scholarship Funds provide tuition assistance scholarships to our students. 44 scholarships totaling $22,750 were awarded students for the 2020-2021 school year through our endowment efforts. What a difference this makes to our school families! The best part of Endowment? It continues to give – year after year after year because only the earnings are used. Your gift today provides a secure source of income for the school blessing our families for many, many years to come. On behalf of the FCEDO Endowment Board, I am pleased to share the Endowment Fund Activity for the 2019-20 fiscal year. This -fund is now valued at $ 5,651,061.73 (market value), and has contributed $165,500 to the school’s operations this fiscal year. In addition, the Soaring to New Heights campaign has raised over $5.5 million. The majority of these funds are being endowed and the earnings are being used to make major adjustments to teacher salaries. Thank you one and all for contributing to our Endowment Fund. Sincerely, Sue Riley, Director of FCEDO (Endowment and Planned Giving) FCEDO Endowment Fund 2019/2020 Activity (Soaring Funds are not listed below as they are invested separately.
