Mike Kinnison is entering his 17th season as head coach of one of the most storied programs in collegiate baseball. In taking over the program in 1997, Kinnison was following in the shadow of Coach Dave “Boo” Ferris and Dave Marchant. However, Kinnison has casted a mighty shadow himself. On March 20, 2011, Coach Kinnison tied his former coach and mentor Dave “Boo” Ferriss for the school’s career wins mark at 639. In 26 seasons, Ferriss compiled a 639-387-8 record as head coach of the Statesmen. Kinnison accomplished the feat in 15 seasons as skipper. In 2010, it was announced that Kinnison was an inductee for the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. On July 31, 2011, Kinnision was inducted into the Hall of Fame with the class of 2011. Receiving the highest honor an athlete or coach can receive in Mississippi, Kinnison is a legend still hard at work. Since 1997, Kinnison has accomplished an unbelievable career record of 703-216-1 (.764). In 2004, he earned the ABCA “National Coach of the Year” award after leading the Statesmen to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship. He has also been named the “Gulf South Coach of the Year” four times. Kinnison was appropriately named “Coach of the Decade” by the GSC in 2010. In his previous 16 seasons as head coach, Kinnison has guided the Statesmen to the 2004 NCAA National title, five College World Series appearances, eight NCAA South Regional appearances (1999-2005, 2007), 11 GSC Western Division titles (1997-2005, 2007-2008), five NCAA South/South-Central Regional championships and five Gulf South Conference titles. Following after their coach, the Statesmen continue to achieve high honors themselves as 12 were placed on the GSC’s All-Decade Team. This included the talented Jud Thigpen who was awarded West Division Player of the Decade. Before taking over the reigns as head coach, Kinnison served as an assistant coach for three seasons under Bill Marchant. Kinnison was an important component to the 1994 and 1996 teams, who accomplished trips to the Gulf South Conference Championships and the College World Series. In his three years as an assistant, the Statesmen compiled an impressive 138-36 (.793) record. The Benton native was a standout shortstop for Coach Dave “Boo” Ferris from 1977-1978. Kinnison garnered ABCA Second Team All-American honors during the 1978 season. In that same year, he batted .343 with 25 doubles and 56 RBI’s in leading the Statesmen to a second place finish at the NCAA College World Series. Kinnison currently holds the season record for doubles (25-tied) and previously held the record for most games played (62) in a season. Before returning to his alma mater, Kinnison was an accomplished high school coach in Mississippi. He coached at Lee Academy (1979-81), Jackson Prep (1982-92) and Madison Central (1993). He claimed three Mississippi Private School Association State Championships at Jackson Prep in 1982, 1990 and 1991. During his prep head-coaching career, Kinnison achieved an overall record of 292-83 (.779). Kinnison earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education in 1977 from Delta State University. He later earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from DSU in 1978. The accomplished mathematician served as an instructor at DSU for many years. Kinnison is married to the former Cindy Colbert of Grenada. They are the proud parents of Mary Claire and Kate, both graduates of Delta State University. The Kinnison’s reside in Cleveland. Since 2003, the Statesmen have enjoyed the highest level of attendance of any 1964 7-4 NCAA Division II program in the nation. 1965 10-4 1966 8-6 1967 11-7 The construction on the stadium was completed in 1964 under the watchful eye David “Boo” 1968 11-5 1969 14-5 Ferriss, who oversaw the transformation of the 6.63-acre parcel of land into DSU’s present day 1970 7-13-1 field of dreams. The field was named in honor of Ferriss upon his retirement on June 18, 1988. 1971 13-7 1972 13-7 1973 14-2 Delta State’s all-time record at Ferriss Field is 906-276-4, and the Statesmen have posted an 363-71 1974 20-5 mark under current head coach Mike Kinnison at the facility. During the “Boo” Ferriss era, DSU was 1975 16-7 360-149-3 (.706). Under head coach Don Ward, the Statesmen were 36-17 (.679); and under Bill 1976 13-7 1977 24-6 Marchant DSU was 144-39-1 (.785) Last season, the Statesmen posted a 23-3 record at Ferriss Field. 1978 23-11 1979 22-10 In 1971, the State Building Commission authorized the expenditure of $85,000 to add lights to the 1980 17-3 1981 21-6-1 facility, but Ferriss and other DSU administrators made the decision to build a covered grandstand, 1982 18-3 dugouts, a press box, concession stand and restrooms. The early renovations still provided the 1983 1-11-1 Statesmen fans with the comfort, convenience and true baseball atmosphere that Ferriss had 1984 19-5 1985 24-10 envisioned during his coaching tenure. Prior to the 1999 season the bleachers were renovated 1986 19-8 and a new press box was built. 1987 19-6 1988 32-8 1989 13-5 Following the 1999 season Kinnison and his staff painted a yellow home run line on the top of the 1990 16-5 outfield fence and a red-brick backstop with netting was added in January of 2000. New Chairback 1991 20-5 seats are the latest addition to Ferriss Field. Completed in the fall of 2001 the seats are located 1992 15-7 1993 11-7-1 behind the the new backstop at field level. 1994 16-5 1995 27-3 1996 26-2 In 2007, the Robert L. Crawford Center was completed. The Crawford center serves as the main 1997 15-2 entrance and exit point for all Statesmen baseball games. The Crawford Center features an expanded 1998 24-4 concession stand, memorabilia stand and large restrooms. It also houses the “Dave ‘Boo’ Ferriss 1999 16-3 2000 26-4 Museum.” The Ferriss Museum is open before each home baseball game and by appointment. 2001 20-0 2002 27-3 2003 27-2 2004 25-3 2005 25-5 2006 17-6 2007 26-3 2008 25-4 2009 19-6 2010 17-12 2011 17-5 2012 17-6 2013 25-3 TOTAL: 50 years / 908-276-4 (.766) COACHES All-TIME RECORDS AT FERRISS FIElD Mike Kinnison 365-71 (.837) Dave “Boo” Ferriss 360-149-3 (.706) Bill Marchant 144-39-1 (.785) Don Ward 36-17 (.679) FERRISS FIELD IN THE NCAA DIVISION II ATTENDANCE LEADERS (2003-2012)
