Ford Presidential Library White House Communications Agency (WHCA): Videotapes of Public Affairs, News, and Other Television Broadcasts, 1973-77 WHCA selectively created, or acquired, videorecordings of news and public affairs broadcasts from the national networks CBS, NBC, and ABC; the public broadcast station WETA in Washington, DC; and various local station affiliates. Program examples include: news special reports, national presidential addresses and press conferences, local presidential events, guest interviews of administration officials, appearances of Ford family members, and the 1976 Republican Convention and Ford-Carter debates. In addition, WHCA created weekly compilation tapes of selected stories from network evening news programs.     ABSTRACT A CASE STUDY OF CROSS-OWNERSHIP WAIVERS: FRAMING NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF RUPERT MURDOCH’S REQUESTS TO KEEP THE NEW YORK POST by Rachel L. Seeman Media ownership is an important regulatory issue that is enforced by the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC, Congress, court and public interest groups share varying viewpoints concerning what the ownership limits should be and whether companies should be granted a waiver to be excused from the rules. News Corporation is one media firm that has a history of seeking these waivers, particularly for the New York Post and television stations in same community. This study conducted a qualitative framing analysis of news articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to determine if the viewpoints expressed by the editorial boards were reflected in reports on News Corp.’s attempt to receive cross-ownership waivers. The analysis uncovered ten frames the newspapers used to assist in reporting the events and found that 80% of these frames did parallel the positions the paper’s editorial boards took concerning ownership waivers.     Lajos Héthy SOCIAL DIALOGUE AND THE EXPANDING WORLD The decade of tripartism in Hungary and in Central and Eastern Europe 1988-99 European Trade Union Institute Bruxelles, 2001 The author: Lajos Héthy is one of the architects of social dialogue in Hungary. He holds degrees as an economist and sociologist, academic doctor of sociology and h. professor (Faculty of Economics, Janus Pannonius University, Pecs). As director of the Labour Research Institute, Budapest (1980-99) he headed the government’s Wage Reform Expert Group (1987-88), paving the way for the establishment of the tripartite Interest Reconciliation Council. In 1990-91 he was deputy secretary of state, and in 1994-98 political secretary of state of the Ministry of Labour and the government’s chief negotiator in the tripartite institutions. He has been working as an expert for the International Labour Organization since 1978. In 1994-98 he was Hungary’s government delegate to the ILO’s Governing Body. In 1996-97 he participated in the ILO’s exercise in developing tripartism in Albania. He was the founder and first president of the Hungarian Industrial Relations Association (1991-99). He has published widely on labour relations and labour administration issues in Hungary and abroad. At present he is director for labour and employment, UN Civil Administration, Kosovo. First, for the accession countries the fast adoption of EU regulations provides a sound basis for further growth, but the dynamics will change considerably between sectors and regions. Second, for the “old” EU increasing political diversity, economic imbalances, and price competition will likely slow or end the union’s current phase of harmonization and economic policy integration, or “ever closer union.” Third, the enlarged EU will most likely continue to grow – to the East and to the South. Together, these developments should increase the attractiveness of the European market for international investors by pushing it into the direction of a more flexible and competitive common market.
