The-Tams-Current.Pdf Bio To hear it, you might think you just stepped into Motown. To breathe it, you smell a tropical breeze. To feel it, you let the rhythm grasp your body and whirl it into motion. To see it, is like an extravaganza of light and energy. But to experience it, you must say it …. “I want THE TAMS”!! The Tams were formed in Atlanta, GA in 1962. It’s members were Joseph Pope and Charles Pope (founders), Horace Key, Floyd Ashton, and Robert Lee Smith. In the beginning, they sang and danced as a way of having fun and to escape their circumstances, hoping to make at least a little money. The group began performing in local night spots for $1.25 each. These small wages only allowed for them to purchase matching Tam O’Shanter hats to wear while on stage. From this trademark, the legendary Tams name was born. The Tams hard work, patience and perseverance eventually paid off when they were signed to Arlen records and had their first Billboard hit in 1962, the single “Untie Me”, which was number 12 on the R&B chart. In 1963, ABC Records signed them and their first album produced a Top Ten hit, “What Kind of Fool”. They began playing throughout the country and a string of hits followed. These included “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy”, “I’ve Been Hurt” and “Hey Girl”. Since then, they have released over 15 albums and been honored with one Platinum and two Gold records. They have toured and recorded with Jimmy Buffet and performed with such greats as Gladys Knight, Jackie Wilson and many more. They have received the title “Beach Band of the Decade” and have been inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Hall of Fame and the Beach Music Hall of Fame. The Tams are still recording today and have recently released their latest singles “My Main Squeeze” and “This Love Will Last” from their newest CD The Tams Comin’ At Cha’. The current members include Li’l Redd Cottle, Robert Arnold, Elton Richardson, Greg Gallashaw and Reginald Preston. Despite the unfortunate passing of “The Legendary Joe Pope” followed by Charles Pope on July 11, 2013, The Tams have continued to be as popular as ever. As Charles always said at shows, “The Tams will never die” as son Li’l Redd continues as lead singer/frontman of The Tams and is now bringing in a new generation of The Tams. We have three young Tams in training, Redd's son Mikai, Tiny's and Ti's, son King, and Elton son Jordan. Honors The Tams have had four #1 songs at the national, and international levels, as well as one major regional hit: What Kind of Fool - #1 R& B / #6 Top 40 (1963) Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy - #26 Top 40 (1968) Hey Girl Don't Bother Me - Three weeks at #1 in England (1971) Walkin' Dr. Bill - "Walkin' Dr. Bill was #1 in the Summer of 2000 and won "Song of the Year" at the 2000 CAMMY Awards. I've Been Hurt - Although never on the charts, "I've Been Hurt" was most likely the biggest regional hit ever (based on sales and airplay) prior to 1980. • 1 Platinum record • 1992 Inducted into the Atlanta Hall of Fame • 2 Gold Records • 1994 Inducted in Beach Music Hall of Fame • 13 Albums • 1996 Inducted into Georgia Music Hall of Fame • Featured in "Top of The Pops" • 1999 Recorded "Flesh and Bones" with Jimmy Buffett / • Featured in "Gold Mine" magazine • Beach House on the Moon" CD • 1986 " Beach Band of the Decade " by Beach Music • 1999 Touring with Jimmy Buffett / Beach House on the Awards • Moon US tour • 1988 " Outstanding Black Musical Group" by the Atlanta • 2000 Cammy Award Winner for "Walkin' Dr. Bill,“ Black History Awards • a duet with G.C. It was there I remember buying my first Tams Forty Five, 'What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am)' on HMV and was immediately captured by Joseph Pope's distinctive ragged hoarse lead vocals, and the group’s rough, but tight harmonies. The original members, Joseph Pope, Charles Pope, Robert Lee Smith, and Horace Kay got together in 1952 whilst still at high school in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Their formative years as The Four Dots were spent gigging around the local club/dances/high school circuit. Blues, as a musical form, has had and continues to have a profound effect on the entire music industry, both in the United States and abroad. Blues constitute a rich cultural entity in its pure form; but its influence goes far beyond this-for itis the bedrock of jazz, the basis of much of folk and country music and it is closely akin to gospel. But finally and most importantly, blues and its derivatives- and the concept of soul-are major factors in today's pop music. In fact, it is no exaggeration to state flatly that blues, a truly American idiom, is the most pervasive element in American music COVER PHOTO today. In 2008 UNESCO awarded Glasgow the title of ‘City of Music’ and the application dossier submitted in support of this title noted the importance of rock and pop for the city’s musical reputation. Since the late 1970s a large number of bands have emerged from (or been associated with) the city, yet little academic research has been carried out to determine the factors behind this phenomenon.

FEEDBACK FROM MUSICIANS AND FIRST BOOK BUYERS The “Comments from Book Owners” page (on Book Page) has become a very popular place on the web site so we will utilize it to not only give you the latest feedback from the musicians and book buyers but to give you additional news regarding the book and other information. These are our last comments that will be posted for 2006. We will be begin a new listing of comments about the book along with general comments and observations titled 2007 comments. Greg Thanks for the book. I really appreciate it, and am simply awed at the tremendous effort you made to record this history. I wanted to buy a copy for Larry Nixon, who re-mixed the Tassels tapes (3 songs) cut in Jimmy Capps’ studio, and the tracks that I wrote, arranged, and cut (13 songs) in Heber Johnson’s studio in Wilmington. Jay Howard was the engineer. I will send copies of these to you, if you want, when the CD cover is finished. I may be able to find some more early Tassels tapes, now that I have a new utility building, and can clean out the old one. Also, I may be able to get some photos of the (Wayne Lanier era) Tassels, performing at a high school prom. I just saw the guy that has these. Do you want these when I get them? Again, thanks for the book, and I wish you and yours a very happy and successful 2007! PS: Thanks for the advice. I will buy at Books-A-Million.

  • A Note from Nora Marion: We Are Getting Closer
Comments 3rd quarter 2007 (posted from the most recent first) 3rd Quarter Comments September 25, 2007 Atlanta, Georgia Misc: Opps! We inadvertently deleted prior comments from yesterday’s postings. We have now corrected. Our crusade for NAMI has a few days to go. So far, NAMI Georgia has raised 77% of its goal of $75,000. If you plan to make a donation and have not already, now’s the time. See “We Need Your Support” on the BOOK page. A note from Nora Marion: We are getting closer! HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP Here I am again. I just couldn't keep my fingers off the keyboard because we're having a great day. When I went online to see how we were doing I was in a state of suspense. How much higher was the total? How much higher was the thermometer? It felt just like Christmas morning when I used to sneak to take a peak at what was under the tree. Sometimes I was disappointed as a child. But not today. Today it felt good. From 7:30am ($56,682.90 - 76%) to 4:00pm today ($60,488.90 - 81%), we've increased our total by $3,806. We're getting so close I can see/feel/smell/taste/hear it. My senses are in a state of unbelievable, super-tingling anticipation. Like James Brown always said, "It feels good, but I knew that it would now." Let's keep it going. We have 3 days left. Nora We heard also yesterday from a reporter in Augusta, Georgia who is doing a story on George Croft and The Pallbearers.

  • Cha-Cha Hits New Orleans
Cha-Cha Hits New Orleans The danzón, which evolved from the habanera, or Havana dance (also known as the Cuban contradanza), is the official musical genre and dance of Cuba, not to mention its active musical presence in Mexico and other Latin American countries. The contradanza is a wonderful fusion of European and African rhythms with the addition of its own unique Creole syncopations. The 1930s saw the introduction of a new subgenre of Cuban dance music, the danzón-mambo (also known as danzón de nuevo ritmo), which marked the transition from the classical danzón first to the mambo and later to the cha-cha-chá. Introduced by Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrín in the early 1950s, the cha-cha-chá, informally called the cha-cha, has the perfect “onomatopoeia” name. The popular dance’s moniker is derived from the shuffling sound made by the dancers’ feet as they move in those three rapid consecutive steps (one, two, cha-cha-chá), which define the dance’s rhythm (developed from the danzón-mambo). It all began at the Silver Star Club in Havana, where Enrique Jorrín was performing with the Orquesta América. He observed that many of the dancers had difficulty with the syncopated rhythms of the danzón- mambo, so he began composing songs where the melody was marked strongly on the first downbeat and the rhythm was less syncopated. To these new compositions, the dancers had improvised a triple step to their footwork (inspired by Afro-Cuban tribal-religious rhythms already familiar to many Cubans at that time), and so produced that distinctive cha-cha-chá sound.
