BIBLE LANDS NOTES: Shiloh 1 Shiloh Location: • Twenty miles north of Jerusalem. • Twelve miles south of Shechem. • Ten miles northeast of Bethel. Was within the boundary of Ephraim. Judges 21:19 Here the Israelites, under the leadership of Joshua, set up the tabernacle with the Ark of the Covenant, and divided by lots the unappropriated parts of Canaan. Joshua 18:10 The inheritances of Benjamin, Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan were allotted at Shiloh. Joshua 18:11 - 19:51 Here six cities of refuge ( Joshua 30 ) and the Levitical cities ( Joshua 21 ) were named. The tabernacle remained in Shiloh up to the time of Eli and the early years of Samuel. Judges 18:31 ; 1 Samuel 4; 2:14-22 ; 3:3-21 ; 4:3-4 At Shiloh Hannah prayed for a son. Eli thought she was drunk. I Samuel 11 It was at Shiloh that while Samuel was a little boy, God called him during the night. 1 Samuel 3:1-11 The Israelites carried the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh to their camp at Ebenezer and then into battle wherein Israel was defeated and the ark was carried off by the Philistines. 1 Samuel 4:2-11 ; Jeremiah 7:12-14 ; 26:6-9 Upon receiving the news that the ark of God had been captured, Eli died at Shiloh. 1 Samuel 4:18 Psalm 78:60 — “So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men.” Ahijah lived in Shiloh. It was Ahijah who told Jeroboam that he would be king over the ten tribes. 1 Kings 11:31 BIBLE LANDS NOTES: Shiloh 2 When their child became ill, Jeroboam’s wife came to Shiloh to inquire of the prophet what would become of the child. 1 Kings 14:1-18 Jeremiah mentions Shiloh several times and warns that the temple in Jerusalem will suffer the same fate as Shiloh. Jeremiah 7:14 ; 26:6-9; 41:5 .

Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

After the Byzantine period, when Shiloh was an important Christian cult place, it disappeared from the written sources and started to be identified with Nebi Samwil. In the 12th century Shiloh reappeared in the travelogues of Muslims, and shortly thereafter, in ones by Jews. Although most of the traditions had to do with the Tabernacle, some traditions started to identify Shiloh with the tomb of Eli and his family. The present study looks at the relationship between the practice of ziyara (“visit” in Arabic), which was characterized by the veneration of tombs, and the cult in Shiloh. The paper also surveys archeological finds in Shiloh that attest to a medieval cult and compares them with the written sources. In addition, it presents testimonies by Christians about Jewish cultic practices, along with testimonies about the cult place shared by Muslims and Jews in Shiloh. ABSTRACT. The “governor’s residency” at Tel ‘Eton was destroyed in the late 8th century BCE in an Assyrian military campaign. While the numerous finds enable a detailed reconstruction of life on the eve of the destruction, this elite house was cleaned continuously, and since no floor raisings were identified, little was known of the building’speriodofuse. Radiocarbon (14C) samples taken from within a foundation deposit and from the floor make-up, however, indicate that the earliest phase of the residency was built in the late 11th–10th century BCE. This has bearings on the date in which social complexity evolved in Judah, on the debate regarding the historicity of the kingdom of David and Solomon, and it also provides the earliest date for the use of ashlar stones in Judah. Finally, the long life of the “governor’s residency” exemplifies a little addressed phenomenon—the old-house effect—in which buildings and settlements existed for a few centuries, but only left significant remains from their last phase.

For God did not send His Son into the world so that He should judge the world, but so that the world shall be saved through Him. The one believing [or, trusting] in Him is not judged, but the one not believing has already been judged, because he has not believed in the Name of the only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son of God.” (John 3:16–18). “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life! No one comes to the Father except through [or, by means of] Me!” (John 14:6). Every study of the Word of God ought to be preceded by a naming of your sins to God. This restores you to fellowship with God (1John 1:8–10). If there are people around, you would name these sins silently. If there is no one around, then it does not matter if you name them silently or whether you speak aloud.
