FALL 2021 TRI-COUNTY SEASONS 3

Letter from the Publisher

We are proud to present the inaugural issue of Tri-County Seasons. The area’s only comprehensive high school sports magazine. We hope you find this one-of-a-kind, sports magazine both provocative and informative as we pre- view the high school sports fall season.

For the past 25 years, we have previewed high school football and basketball. It was time to take a more compre- hensive approach and preview fall sports which include boys and girls soccer, golf, cross country, girls volleyball and boys tennis. We have some really good players in every sport. It’s time to get to know some of them. We’ll publish our winter edition in December and our spring edition in March 2022 featuring key players for this 2021-22 school year.

The cover contest for Tri-County Seasons magazine is voted on by you, our readers! Each edition we’ll provide the area’s top talent going into the sports season. This is where you come in, as fans, teams, families and friends can go Online to vote for their favorite player to land on the cover. The winners will be announced on our social media. We will feature coaches, players to watch, pictures, team schedules, and great sports stories that you will find interesting and enjoy for each sports season.

As the pandemic continues to re-shape how we live, sports continues to play a meaningful role with student athletes at every level. For high school student athletes and many families, it’s another fabric woven inside a household. High school sports often form teammates for life and memories forever.

As a former College student athlete, let’s celebrate our area’s high school athletics during these difficult dan uncer- tain times by cheering them on as we move forward. Welcome back fans! High School sports can serve as more than an escape from reality. These young student athletes are showing us how to adapt, change, and thrive during this most trying time in our history in order to compete under some of the most rigorous training conditions imagin- able.

They are inspiring! We hope you enjoy the inaugural edition of Tri-County Seasons and the following editions for years to come!

Sincerely,

Kevin D. Austin Publisher Register Publications

SD FOOTBAL PREVIEW Strong Summer Fuels Enthusiasm for SD Football Grad losses hit hard, but Knights look forward to ‘slinging it’

Knights will prepare for traditional battles against local rivals East Central and Law- renceburg.

Thankfully, for the coaching staff, the team will benefit from a talented group of returning upperclassman. As well numerous third- and fourth-year athletes, the team is pleased to welcome several freshman and sophomores who exhibit great potential.

Knights’ fans can expect to see a tradition- ally strong defensive presence this season, which the coaching staff hopes will form a solid foundation toward those winning ways. “We look to continue our stride with our defense,” Ballart said. “We like to think we have built our program around our defense, and we have some good dudes on that side of the ball.”

Hall of Fame Cotherman inducted to IATCCC Hall of Fame

Staff Report Terre Haute

Longtime East Central High School coach, Steve Cotherman, was inducted into the Indiana Association of Track & Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame as a member of its 2021 class Saturday, June 19.

An inductee under the IATCCC’s Contributor category, Cotherman - who still coaches boys and girls cross country for the Trojans - coached EC’s track and field teams for 37 years, includ - ing 36 as boys head coach, before retiring af- ter 44-1/2 years as a Sunman-Dearborn School Corporation teacher in 2016.

“It sure is an honor, and at the same time it’s very humbling,” said the 70-year old Greendale resident. “We usually had the ceremony along with our coaches’ clinic, in January or February, but the clinic was held virtually this past year, so they decided to do the Hall of Fame in the summer. It worked out pretty well.

He responded to Q & A just prior to the start of presea- son practice:

Q: How did you get started coaching soccer? A: It’s funny, because I played football, wrestled and ran track at Lawrenceburg High School. We didn’t have soccer in those days. This was about 1975-76, and he told me soccer was the fast- est-growing sport in the country. I took the coaching class and enjoyed it. Just things like that. I like coaching the game, and the sportsmanship. Basically, the boys learn a lot of life lessons out there. Q: How did you start coaching at the high school level? They learn you’re not going to win everything all the time. The fact is, A: My oldest son Garrett (now principal and head soccer coach at Ir- being around 37 boys every year keeps you young, too.” vington Prep in Indianapolis) was a junior at Lawrenceburg in 1998, and the head coach, George Hiett Jr., needed an assistant coach at the time. Q: Now that you’re retired from law enforcement, how long do you think He asked me to help out until they found somebody. Steve Johnson took you’ll continue to coach LHS soccer? over as head coach the following year, and he asked me to come back as A: As long as I’m still able to help the boys learn and improve, and it assistant coach. When Steve didn’t return in 2000, they asked me if I’d continues to be fun for me, I’ll probably keep doing it. Last July, I thought for sure we were headed for our first losing season in my 21 years as head coach. We started 5 weeks late (due to COVID-19), then we lost 3-4 games in a row and had a tough month-and-a-half. Then something clicked, and we ended up knocking off a very good Batesville team to win the sectional. We finished 9-7-1, and what I thought was going to be our worst season turned out to be maybe the most fun, and most enjoyable.

Q: What has retirement been like for you so far, off the soccer pitch? A: My wife Kathy and I have been traveling a lot. We just got back from visiting (twin son) Brock in Washington, DC. He works for the iFLY indoor skydiving experience, and we both got to do that. I drove 8 hours back from Washington and had 15 minutes to get ready to go to soccer practice (laughs). Earlier this summer, we visited (twin) Brandon (a su- pervisor for Pepsi-Cola) and his wife Taryn in Paducah, Ky. They’ve got our granddaughters, Berklee, 3, and Braylee, 2, and a little boy, Beckett, on the way in October. We also bought a camper and have been camping a lot. I did some substitute teaching at LHS this spring, and I’ve also helped out Tom Cheek at Leisure Pool & Spa, in Aurora, a little bit.
