Monterey Classic Car Week

Classic Car Week is over! It’s time to plan for 2017—it’s best to get hotel reservations by January.

Sure, it’s expensive—the hotels noticed the all-Ferrari traffic jams and they set their rates accordingly. But, if Monterey’s hotels didn’t make big bucks when the crowds come there’d be a lot fewer hotels and you couldn’t get a room at all. You’d be hard pressed to find a week-long cruise for the price of Classic Car Week and you wouldn’t have all the rare, beautiful cars in the world just hoping you’d come and look at them.

The really high hotel rates are just for the weekend of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance so it doesn’t cost all that much more to stay for the whole week.

Split-Windshield 356 at Sunday Porsha Coffee Meet

A rare “Split-Windshield” showed up at Sherwood Lee’s monthly Sunday Porsha Coffee Meet in La Cañada-Flintridge on 21 August 2016.

It was one of the first cars Porsche built in — they made this style from April 1950 through April 1952.

These very early 356s also have unique features like unique tail lights, wooden door caps, and attached bumpers (also known as body bumpers). Those bumpers don’t protect too well but they look great and contribute to extraordinary aerodynamics.

This car was built before the introduction of the famed Porsche Crest. It looks like # 531, Fashion Grey.

Oktoberfeste

Oktoberfest began as the celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I3) marriage to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.4 The Bavarians enjoyed the party, but decided that October was too cold, so they moved it to September. Oktoberfest seems to combine well with German cars (wenn Sie nicht zu viel trinken Bier).

There are lots of Oktoberfeste to choose from:

182nd Oktoberfest in München, 17 September through 3 October 2016 Obviously, the one in Munich is the original. One might expect Mädchen im Dirndl, there’s also Armbrustschützen und Scheibenschießen5. It all takes place at die Theresienwiese im Zentrum von München.

Oktoberfest Phoenix Club, Weekends, 16 September through 30 October 2016 The Phoenix Club, 1340 S. Sanderson Avenue, Anaheim, California 92806, phone 714.563.4166

Friday: 6:00 PM until Midnight Saturday: 5:00 PM until Midnight Sunday: 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM

They’ll feature Bavaria’s Allgäu Yetis und Odenwälder Dirndljaeger6. The air rifle range will be open 6:00 PM Saturdays and 1:00 PM Sundays.

Oktoberfest Alpine Village, Weekends, 16 September through 30 October 2016 Alpine Village Center, 833 West Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90502, phone 310.327.4384

Friday: 6:00 PM-midnight Saturday: 5:00 PM-midnight Sunday: 1:00 PM-6:00 PM

They encourage patrons to buy tickets online.

3 Ludwig I was not “Mad King Ludwig”—that was his grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig I was essentially overthrown in 1848 shortly after he attempted to tax beer. 4 From wikipedia.org 5 The first athlete disqualified from the Olympics for doping was a Swedish modern pentathlete who had “two beers” to “calm his nerves” before the pistol shooting portion at the 1968 Olympics. 6 Not to be confused with the Original Dirndljäger.

San Gabriel Valley Region, PCA Big Bear-Oak Glen Tour Saturday, 10 September 2016

We’ll leave San Dimas near the eastern edge of our region and head to scenic Rt 18—Rim of the World Highway for the climb up to lunch (or a late breakfast) in Big Bear Lake. After lunch we’ll take one of Southern California’s best—and least known—scenic drives: Rt 38 through woods and mountains down to Yucaipa.

At the end of the drive we can visit the orchards of Oak Glen for fresh-picked apples and real apple cider.

Big Bear-Oak Glen Driving Notes

Assemble at The Coffee Klatch There are lots of gas stations very nearby—come a little early and fill up if you’ll need gas. Enjoy some food and award- winning coffee before the driver’s meeting.

From The South (10, 60, 57 Freeways) From the North (210 Freeway) 1. Take the 57 North 1. Take the 57 South 2. Take the Arrow Highway Exit 2. Take the 1st exit: Arrow Highway (3rd exit North of the 10) 3. At the light, cross Arrow Highway into the Target 3. Turn Left onto Arrow Highway Shopping Center parking lot 4. Drive under the 57 Freeway 4. Park in the North end of the lot near Arrow Highway 5. Turn left into the Target Shopping Center parking lot (1st light after the underpass) 6. Park in the North end of the lot near Arrow Highway

Freeway Transit We’ll hop on the 57 northbound then the 210 eastbound. We’ll keep speeds low till we’re a little way down the 210 so everybody can form up, then we’ll resume normal freeway speeds to Rt 18-Waterman Avenue.

Wildwood Park Wildwood Park isn’t the pride of San Bernardino, and San Bernardino isn’t the pride of Southern California but it’s in the perfect spot to regroup and put the Targa and Convertible tops down.

The Pines Lakefront The Pines Lakefront is right on the lake looking over a marina. They serve breakfast from 9:00 AM to noon.

Onyx Summit At 8,443 ft. it’s the highest highway pass in Southern California.

Oak Glen Oak Glen oakglen.net has seven orchards and three [petting] zoos. The products aren’t what you see at Von’s—the apples are small and don’t have a freshly waxed shine but there are a lot of varieties and they do taste like they were picked that morning (they probably were). The cider is really cider!

Getting Home The tour officially ends at Oak Glen. The easy way to get home is to follow Oak Glen Blvd. all the way around and down the hill. Turn right (West) at Cherry Valley Blvd. There’s a traffic light and a Shell station and a sign pointing to the 10 freeway.
