Mission Statement The mission of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary is to equip leaders to fulfill the Great Commission and the Great Commandments through the local church and its ministries. II. Core Values Focus New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary has five core values: Doctrinal Integrity, Spiritual Vitality, Mission Focus, Characteristic Excellence, and Servant Leadership. This course addresses Doctrinal Integrity specifically in that the course is designed to prepare the student to grow in the understanding and interpreting of the Word of God. Characteristic Excellence is also addressed in that the student should be as prepared as possible to be ministers for Christ. Mission Focus is emphasized in that interpreting the Bible is a key element in presenting the Good News of the Gospel to the world. Proper interpretation is vital in fulfilling the Great Commission. This course addresses the competency of Biblical Exposition by preparing the student to interpret and communicate the Bible accurately. Duvall Introduction When Clarence Walker began publishing The Trail of Blood in 1931, neither he nor J. M. Carroll, the author, could have imagined the impact the booklet would have on Baptists in the United States and around the world. The first thousand copies had been sold quickly by another publisher and sales continued steadily from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. Today there have been nearly three million copies sold. The booklet has been enlarged by the present publisher,1 and it has been translated into several other languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and possibly others. It is now on the Internet in at least three languages. The Trail of Blood describes in a brief outline form what successionist historians had written for nearly two centuries. They believed there had been a succession of churches that held the basic doctrines of Baptists, and they were not associated in any way with the Roman Catholic institution. The Trail of Blood does not claim to be a complete history as such, but what might be called a “Baptist Manifesto.” It was written in such a way that pastors and teachers could present a thumbnail sketch of their Baptist ancestors. Carroll's idea was so successful that several authors have used a similar format, 2 while other authors have spent a lot of ink seeking to counter these lessons. 3 W. *Thanks to my son, James Kenneth, for assistance in research and preparation of this essay. -

1 The Future Of Southern Baptists: Mandates For What We Should Be In The 21st Century Southern Baptists have a colorful and fascinating history by any standard of measure. From the Convention’s humble beginnings in Augusta, Georgia on May 8, 1845 (only 293 persons attended the Inaugural Convention and 273 came from 3 states: Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia),1 the Convention’s 2004 Annual could boast of 40 State Conventions, 1,194 Associations, 43,024 Churches and a Total Membership of 16,315,050. There were 377,357 Baptisms, and other additions totaled 422,350. Cooperative Program Giving for 2002-2003 was $183,201,694.14, and Total Receipts recorded was $9,648,530,640.2 This is quite impressive any way you look at it, and for all of this and more Southern Baptists give thanks and glory to God. We are grateful to our Lord for what He has done for us and through us. However, it is to the future that we must now look. In spite of periodic blips on the cultural and moral screen, our nation grows more secular and our world more hostile to “the faith once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Southern Baptists, in the midst of the swirling tides of modernity, have attempted to stake their claim and send a clear message on who we are. Journal for Baptist Theology and Ministry Vol. 2 No. 1 (Spring 2004): 6-21 VOICES FROM THE PAST; VOICES FOR THE PEW: History of Support of the Direct Linkage Between Trustees and the SBC Churches Ergun Mehmet Caner Associate Professor of Theology and Church History Liberty University 1971 University Blvd. Lynchburg, VA 24502 Outsiders often assume that the president of the Southern Baptist Convention sits at the top of a denominational hierarchy, supervises a vast denominational bureaucracy, and directs the work of the Convention by a command-and-control system of authority. This is a natural assumption, for this would be the case in hierarchical systems of denominational polity. But the Southern Baptist Convention is not a hierarchical system, and no individual sits at the top of a denominational flowchart.1 In his forward to the author’s book on the lives of the fifty-two Southern Baptist Convention presidents, Dr. R. Albert Mohler adroitly notes the clear distinction of polity between the Free Church movement, in which Southern Baptists are found, and all other forms of external and internal ecclesiastical authority. We have no ruler. We have no owner. We are a voluntary cooperation of local churches, which have the singular authority to maintain their autonomy. As shall be seen, the trustee system was a systematic and conscious choice by Southern Baptist forefathers to maintain explicitly the direct linkage between the institutions we own and the local churches. As shall be further noted, any violation of the direct linkage between trustees and churches is a direct violation of Southern Baptist’s historical stance on polity. -

Report on Slavery and Racism in the History of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY __________________ A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: We are living in an age of historical reckoning. Communities, nations, institutions, Christian churches, and denominations are now called upon to ask hard questions and, when necessary, to face hard realities. This is true of the Southern Baptist Convention, and it is true for The Southern Baptist Theolog- ical Seminary. In 1995, when Southern Baptists celebrated the one-hundred fiftieth anniversary of the found- ing of our convention, we recognized a reckoning was required. The Convention overwhelmingly adopted an historic resolution which, among other affirmations, stated: Our relationship to African-Americans has been hindered from the beginning by the role that slavery played in the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention; many of our Southern Baptist forbears defended the right to own slaves, and either participated in, supported, or ac- quiesced in the particularly inhumane nature of American slavery; and in later years Southern Baptists failed, in many cases, to support, and in some cases opposed, legitimate initiatives to secure the civil rights of African-Americans. That was an historic act in which the Southern Baptist Convention also declared to the public, “we apologize to all African-Americans for condoning and/or perpetuating individual and systemic racism in our lifetime; and we genuinely repent of racism of which we have been guilty, whether consciously or unconsciously and we ask forgiveness from our African-American brothers and sisters, acknowledging that our own healing is at stake.” That was more than twenty years ago.
