STEINKOPF NAMED TO MANITOBA CABINET - - Given Provincial Secretary, Public Utilities Portfolios Maitland B. Steinkopf, M.B.E., Q.C., 50-year-old Winnipeg businessman and lawyer with a long history of public and charitable service, was sworn in June 12 as Provincial Secretary and Minister of Public Utilities. He becomes Manitoba's 1511 cabinet minister. him Duff Roblin said Mr. Steinkopf brings witli"considerable business and legal capacity and a unique administrative talent that now can be more fully devoted to Manitoba affairs." In his public utilities portfolio, Mr. Steinkopf will be minister res- ponsible for the hydro and phone utilities and for the administration of the motor vehicle branch, the public utilities board, the Securities Act and a number of other statutes. And as provincial secretary, his jurisdiction will include the civil service commission and the operations of the Queen's Printer and the centralized purchasing bureau. Born and educated in Winnipeg, Maitland Bernard Strauss Steinkopf is the son of the late Max Steinkopf, K.C., and Hedwig Steinkopf, a pioneer Manitoba family of the Morden district. He graduated from Manitoba Law school and was called to the bar in 1936. From then until 1945 he practiced law, first in the firm of Steinkopf, Lawrence and Freedman, and then in association with G. Sydney Halter, Q.C. During the last war he joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders as a private. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, ending up with the rank of Lieutenant-colonel. He was awarded the MBE (military). Mr. Steinkopf was elected to the Manitoba Legislature last December as member for River Heights constituency. He has been president and director of a number of firms, including Canada West Shoe Mfg. Company Ltd.; Monarch Life Assurance Company, National Trust Company Ltd.; Bonded Investments Limited; L.H. Packard Company, Limited; J. Leckie Company, Limited; Dayton Shoe Manufacturing Company, Ltd.; Polo Park Centre Limited; R.S. Robinson's Sons Company, Ltd.; Tel Aviv Hilton Hotel; Tip Top Tailors Limited; Israel Hotels International; and the Civic Development Corporation. -more- -2- STEINKOPF As well, he has been of the YMHA and Winnipeg General Hospital, Manitoba chairman for the State of Israel Bonds, March of Dimes and Bar-Ilan University, a trustee of the University of Manitoba Foundation and director of the U.N.R.R.A. drive for Canada. He is honorary solicitor for the Girl Guides Association. Mr. Steinkopf was the first president of the Manitoba Travel and Convention Association. He is a member of Shaarey Zedek Synogogue, is married, and has six children -- five daughters and a son.
