Byers is professor of management science and engineering at Stanford University and founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which is dedicated to accelerating technology entrepreneurship education around the globe. After receiving his B.S., MBA, and Ph.D. from the Univer- sity of California, Berkeley, Dr. Byers held leadership positions in technology ventures including Symantec Corporation. His teaching awards include Stan- ford University’s highest honor (Gores Award) and the Gordon Prize from the National Academy of Engineering. Richard C. Dorf is professor of electrical and computer engineering and pro- fessor of management at the University of California, Davis. They create the larger potential market share and open it up to a more diversified market, increase competitive advantage against competitors. It also allows firms to operate more efficiently and benefit both competition and consumers. However, there are also many cases that the synergy between acquiring company and acquired company failed. The most common reason is to not create synergy between both of them. In recent months, the merger between Microsoft and Skype is a very hot topic of analysts and viewers…etc. This acquisition presents a big opportunity for both firms, Skype give Microsoft a boost in the enterprise collaboration. To exchange for this synergy, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion in cash for Skype, the firm is not yet profitable. Skype revenue totaling $860 million last year and operating profit of $264 million, the company lost $6.9 million overall, according to documents filed with the SEC. Is that a good deal for Microsoft? Many analysts have different point of view but most of them have negative perspective. Research was to provide the analysis of Skype’s intrinsic value with an optimistic view of point about Skype’s future, Microsoft overpaid for Skype.

At the end of the prior month, on Tuesday, September 27, Apple sent media invitations for a press event to be held October 4, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Cupertino Headquarters for a major announcement. Several prominent industry analysts proclaimed with hopeful optimism that the firm would announce the return of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Sadly, Steve Jobs did not appear for what turned out to be a product announcement of the iPhone 4S. In fact, Jobs had stepped down as CEO on January 17, 2011, a year and a half after returning from medical leave. He stated that Tim Cook, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, would run day-to-day operations as he had previously done during Jobs’ 2009 medical leave. The analysts’ wishful thinking had some basis in more than cult like denial of Steve Jobs’ mortality. In fact, despite that medical leave, Jobs had returned for the iPad 2 launch on March 2 and the iCloud introduction on June 6. The analysts were among many constituents around the world who were to be tragically disappointed. Jobs actually had resigned as CEO on August 22, 2011 saying, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come” (Isaacson, 2011). Six weeks later, a day after the new iPhone press conference, he died (Isaacson, 2011).
