Specimens from authors' own collections and from the collections of the museums of Bergamo (MCSNBG), Florence (MZUF) and Rome (MCZR) were examined and 155 species are listed. Among these 67 are new for the area. One species, Euxoa nigricans (Linnaeus , 1761), was erroneously reported for the island of Capraia due to a misidentification of dark speci mens of Agrotis trux (Hübner , 1824). Introduction The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago show an interesting Lepidopteran fauna. In fact we can find some species and subspecies typical of the western Mediterranean islands ( Coeno- nympha corinna trettaui G ross , 1970, Hipparchia neomiris (Godart , 1822), Lasiommata para- megaera (H ubner , 1824), Stanhelia benesignata (Bellier , 1861), Euchrognophos Corsica (Oberthur , 1913), Idaea obliquaria (Turati , 1913)) and also species with southern and western Mediterranean distribution which were never recorded in the Italian peninsula (Hyles dahlii (Geyer , 1827), Hipparchia aristaeus (Bonelli , 1826), Idaea rhodogrammaria (Pungeler , 1913), Lymantria atlantica (Ram bur , 1837)). The Lepidopteran fauna of this area, in particular the Heterocera, is still scarcely known. Capraia is the island whose fauna we know better, especially thanks to the research conducted by the Natural History Museum ,,E. Caffi" of Bergamo (Valle , 1993) by nheans of light traps. The Noctuidae and Geometridae collected were studied by Berio (1993) and Raineri (1993) respectively. The specimens of other Hetero cera families and some Noctuidae collected after the death of Berio have remained unstudied and are conserved in that Museum. More information about Montecristo, Pianosa and Giglio Islands fauna can be found in some other works (Rocci & Turati , 1925; Fanfani & G roppali , 1979; Raineri , 1986; Berio , 1985; Bierm ann , 1990; Dapporto et al., 1999). For Elba the data 135 ©Ges. zur Förderung d. Erforschung von Insektenwanderungen e.V. München, download unter www.zobodat.at are very fragmentary and only a few species are reported (Geisler , 1922; G reenwood , 1964. Zangheri , 1967; W olfsberger , 1971; Battisti et al., 1988; Berio , 1991; Provera , 1992; Raineri 1996; Flamigni & B astia , 1998; Bertaccini & F iu m i, 1999). Further information about Hetero^ cera from the Tuscan Archipelgo can be found in few other works (D el G uercio , 1899- Razzauti , 1917; Berio , 1985; Z illi, 1994; Raineri , 1994; Dapporto et al., 2002; Flamigni et a|' 2002). The data concerning the authors' collecting in Elba, Giglio and Capraia, as well as the notyei published data about Heterocera kept in the Natural History Museum ,,E. Caffi" in Bergamo (MCSNBG), in Prola collection (Museo civico di storia naturale di Roma, MCZR) and in Verity collection (Museo Zoologico „La Specola" di Firenze, MZUF) are listed in this paper. The species marked with an asterisk, not recorded in the above mentioned papers, are new findings for the Archipelago. Unless otherwise stated, the specimens are deposited in the au thors' collections. For the importance of the study conducted in Capraia by Berio (1993), Raineri (1993), and Valle (1993) we decided to include in this work all the species collected even if not new for the island. BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2008) Vol. 1 : 5-10 First record of Oestrus ovis Linnaeus, 1758 from Malta, and case reports of myiasis from the Maltese Islands (Diptera: Brachycera) Paul GATT1 & Trevor ZAMMIT2 ABSTRACT. Oestrus ovis is reported for the first time from Malta. An account is given of four cases of myiasis in Malta, one nasopharyngeal in a sheep host involving O. ovis, and three cutaneous in a human host and in domestic cats, the latter all involving Lucilia sericata. KEY WORDS. Malta, Myiasis, Oestrus ovis, Lucilia sericata. INTRODUCTION The term myiasis was first used by HOPE (1840) to refer to diseases of humans caused specifically by larvae of diptera. It has since then been defined as “the infestation of live vertebrate animals with dipterous larvae, which, at least for a certain period, feed on the host’s dead or living tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food” (ZUMPT , 1965). Two classifications of myiasis have emerged. The first, an anatomical classification, was proposed by Bishopp (PATTON , 1922) and later modified by JAMES (1947). It is based on the anatomical site of the infestation of the host, and is still widely used as it is simple and practical. The second, a parasitological classification proposed by PATTON (1922), takes into account the degree of the parasitic dependency of the fly on the host, and is based on evolutionary and biological considerations. Dermal or subdermal myiasis, also known as cutaneous myiasis, is the invasion of the skin by larvae of Diptera that cause burrows or boils in the dermal layers, invade and enlarge existing wounds (wound and traumatic myiasis) or form wounds themselves (i.e.

  • An Annotated Catalogue of the Lepidoptera Collection of Guido Lanfranco at the National Museum of Natural History in Malta
BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2008) Vol. 1 : 67-78 An annotated catalogue of the Lepidoptera collection of Guido Lanfranco at the National Museum of Natural History in Malta Paul SAMMUT1 & John J. BORG2 ABSTRACT. An annotated list of the lepidoptera in the Lanfranco collection donated to the National Museum of Natural History of Mdina in Malta is included. Where relevant, comments on particular species or specimens are provided. KEY WORDS. Lepidoptera collection, Guido Lanfranco, National Museum of Natural History, Malta. PREAMBLE The entomological collection of Mr Guido Lanfranco was acquired by the National Museum of Natural History as a bequest by Mr G. Lanfranco himself. Most of the insect orders occurring in Malta are represented in the Lanfranco collection. Initially Mr Lanfranco had donated the entomological collection to Dr Louis Cassar who, on acquiring the material contacted the senior author who, in turn, suggested that such a collection should be deposited in an appropriate institution instead of it being dismembered amongst a number of private collections. The formal presentation of the collection to the museum was carried out on April 3, 2006, in the presence of Mr and Ms G. Lanfranco, Dr Mario Tabone, Ms Cecilia Xuereb, Dr L. Cassar and the authors. INTRODUCTION In Guido Lanfranco’s collection, the Lepidoptera are represented by 716 specimens belonging to 99 different species. Except for one species of Geometridae, one of Papilionidae and seven of Saturniidae (in all 13 specimens), all the other material has been ascertained by the collector to be of local origin. Unfortunately, 255 specimens (just over 35.6%) have no data label and in this category, a specimen of Euchloe ausonia (Hübner, 1804), a species possibly new to the lepidopterofauna of Malta is present.

  • The Tuscan Archipelago, Born from the Pearl Necklace of Venus
1 AUGUST 2012 CATERINA POMINI 5492 THE TUSCAN ARCHIPELAGO, BORN FROM THE PEARL NECKLACE OF VENUS It is said that when Venus emerged from the Tyrrhenian Sea, her necklace broke and 7 pearls fell into the water, forming 7 islands. Located between the Italian mainland and Corsica, the Tuscan Archipelago includes the islands of Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri, all of which are protected as part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, established in 1996. Each island has its own history, climate and landscape; if you are thinking about visiting them, you must take into account that only 5 of them are open to the public: the Island of Elba, Capraia, Pianosa, Giglio and Giannutri. Permission to visit Gorgona has to be granted by the Italian Justice Ministry (the Island has been home to an agricultural penal colony since 1869) and access to Montecristo is strictly out of bounds: permission has to be granted by the State Forestry Corps. Having said that, further detailed information and updates can be always found on the Tuscan Archipelago National Park official website . Elba is the largest and most visited island of the Tuscan archipelago and can be reached by ferry from the port of Piombino. Rich in sights and easy to get around, we recommend you visit Napoleon's two villas and the tiny village of Marciana, with its picturesque alleys, small squares and cobblestone streets. As for the beaches, we suggest you go to Fetovaia, Cavoli, La Biodola, Lacona, Procchio and Marina di Campo... they are simply wonderful. Situated about 13 km south-west of Elba, Pianosa can be reached from Marina di Campo, Portoferraio and Rio Marina.

L' elenco viene riportato con alcune annotazioni ecologiche delle specie piu ihteressanti. Summary The results of a preliminary investigation on the Decapod Crustacea of the Arcipelago Toscano are reported. For the 118 collected species, some ecological features are discussed, chiefly about cave communities and species living associated with others sessile in vertebrates. Introduction The area considered, located between the Ligurian Sea on the north and the Tirrenian Sea on the south, includes the islands of Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, Giannutri and some less important reefs. These are all set on the continental shelf surrounded by deep waters in front of the coasts of Toscana, and therefore have quite homogeneous characteristics. As I had the opportunity to ieport in a previous work on the Decapoda of Giglio island (in press), this area although particulary interesting, appears to be scantly investigated. Moreover, recently, the human and industrial installations have deeply changed the environment of Toscan sea: human wastes, due to the remarkable touristic expansion, more and more pollute the waters and the in dustrial discharges modify the structure of the bottom and strongly influence the benthic communities.
