Scorrendo l’indice si nota che la seconda sezione risulta più consistente sia rispetto allo scorso anno sia rispetto all’attuale sezione docenti. Il dato va interpre- tato come l’espressione del fatto che la nostra Miscellanea si va diffondendo sempre più nell’ambito dell’istituto e vari colleghi ritengono utile questo volume come strumento di conoscenza e diffusione dei lavori prodotti con le loro classi nell’ambito di percorsi progettuali o laboratoriali. I lavori accolti in questo volume fanno osservare che vi è stata, rispetto ai due precedenti, una modifica strutturale che coincide con un progressivo ampliamento degli orizzonti della Miscellanea. Mentre, infatti, il primo numero era rivolto in via esclusiva a raccogliere i lavori dei docenti, come segni di qualificato impegno culturale a fianco di quello didattico, il secondo già rivela una trasformazione nel senso dell’apertura verso una didattica attiva, con l’istituzione di una apposita sezione didattica. Si è passati, infatti, dalla ricerca, intesa come produzione di saggi e articoli dei singoli docenti, a testimonianza dei loro interessi culturali, alla ricerca-azione, intesa come ricerca nel suo aspetto dinamico, che procede da una sinergica collaborazione tra docente e alunni. Espressione della ricerca-azione sono i numerosi lavori prodotti dagli allievi stessi, sotto la guida dei docenti, alcuni dei quali sono segni di una autonoma e creativa attività individuale. Quindi la Miscellanea con questo terzo volume si configura come uno spazio editoriale in cui si congiungono armoniosamente i contributi prodotti esclusiva- mente dai docenti, i lavori che sono frutto della collaborazione tra docenti e alunni e gli apporti dei singoli alunni. È, questo, un risultato reso possibile non solo da un armonioso contemperarsi di teoria e prassi didattica, ma anche dal sentimento di appartenenza comunitario che pervade sempre più tutti coloro che operano nel nostro istituto. E questa coscienza comunitaria la Miscellanea, così come le altre iniziative culturali del Liceo “Orazio”, intende riflettere nelle sue pagine, giunte con questo volume a quasi quattrocento. Il presente terzo volume raccoglie i seguenti lavori. La “Sezione docenti” si apre con un articolo del nuovo Dirigente Scolastico, il prof. Gregorio Franza, Considerazioni sulla natura del regolamento disciplinare degli studenti, scritto in collaborazione con la prof.ssa Anna Paola Bottoni: in esso si mette in rilievo, in modo originale e significativo, come il regolamento scolastico, per la sua stessa natura formativa, possa diventare uno strumento dalla forte valenza educativa e ricoprire un ruolo fondamentale nella crescita e nell’orientamento dell’alunno. Ad esso seguono due articoli di critica letteraria del prof. Giuseppe D’Avino, che pur –5– avendo terminato la sua esperienza di Dirigente Scolastico nel Liceo “Orazio” continua a mettere generosamente a disposizione dei docenti le risorse della sua esperienza, cultura e passione per la scuola, non più dall’ufficio della Presidenza ma dalle pagine della Miscellanea. Il primo articolo è Il romanzo storico di Walter Scott e di Alessandro Manzoni: in esso si delineano i caratteri essenziali del romanzo storico, attraverso un’analisi degli aspetti peculiari della narrativa di Walter Scott e di quella di Alessandro Manzoni, condotta alla luce delle differenti concezioni della storia che riflettono entrambi. Nel secondo, Il romanzo elegiaco di Carlo Cassola, l’autore pone in rilievo il prevalente motivo della narrativa cassoliana, ossia l’analisi della psicologia femminile condotta in tutte le sue sfumature. A questi saggi egli ha aggiunto alcuni pregevoli racconti, che uniscono la profondità della riflessione sui temi dolorosi dell’esistenza a una delicata, crepusco- lare sensibilità. Il lavoro successivo è un articolo della prof.ssa Anna Paola Bottoni, Alcune riflessioni sulla didattica orientativa, nel quale presenta alcune osservazioni emerse dalla relazione dell’IRRSAE Piemonte sulla valenza orientativa delle disci- pline, insieme con alcune indicazioni di attuazione. Seguono il mio lavoro, Uno strumento di approccio allo studio della storia: il “questionario-intervista”, che prende in esame i ricordi e le testimonianze sulla seconda guerra mondiale offerte dai nonni degli alunni, e l’articolo del prof. Marco Pescetelli, Scritto sull’acqua, riflessioni teoriche sul restauro dei film, un contributo alla riflessione sul problema della salvaguardia del nostro patrimonio cinematografico, minacciato dalla facile deperibilità del materiale filmico. Conclude la sezione l’articolo della prof.ssa Anna Maria Robustelli, già docente del nostro istituto, Le sorelle di Shakespeare, nel quale l’autrice, rispondendo al quesito sull’inesistenza di una letteratura femminile inglese fino al Settecento, esamina la condizione della donna dall’età elisabettiana, con l’ausilio di numerose testimonianze letterarie. La “Sezione didattica (collaborazioni degli studenti)”, quest’anno assai nutrita, si apre anzitutto con i lavori svolti dagli alunni delle classi I e II B, coordinati dalla prof.ssa Licia Fierro nell’ambito del progetto didattico “La Costituzione repubbli- cana: il patrimonio degli italiani”, promosso dalla sezione romana della FNISM (Federazione Nazionale degli Insegnanti), in collaborazione con l’Archivio Centrale dello Stato, la direzione generale degli Archivi e l’Imes, per celebrare il sessan- tesimo anniversario del referendum del 2 giugno 1946, che decise la vittoria della repubblica. Nel primo lavoro, La tradizione del liberalismo italiano e la sua influenza sulla Costituzione italiana: Enrico De Nicola, gli studenti della classe I B, guidati dalla prof.ssa Fierro, hanno analizzato l’apporto dato alla costruzione di un’Italia libera e democratica da una delle maggiori figure della cultura liberale italiana, Enrico de Nicola, che fu Capo provvisorio del nascente Stato repubblicano. Il lavoro contiene la conferenza del prof. Lucio Lanfranchi, rielaborata e trascritta dagli studenti. Il secondo lavoro, curato dalla classe II B con la guida della prof.ssa Fierro e la collaborazione della prof.ssa Peretti, è Un contributo significativo della –6– sinistra alla stesura della Costituzione: la figura di Palmiro Togliatti: vi si esamina l’apporto dato dalla sinistra, e in particolare dal leader comunista Palmiro Togliatti, nell’ambito delle discussioni sulla recezione dei Patti Lateranensi nell’ordinamento costituzionale italiano. Segue un terzo lavoro, prodotto dagli studenti della classe III B, ancora sotto la guida della prof.ssa Fierro, per il progetto “Roma per vivere, Roma per pensare” (Pensare e agire al femminile a Roma nel secondo dopoguerra): si tratta di uno studio sulle donne esponenti del pensiero filosofico del Novecento, quali Maria Zambrano e Hanna Arendt, impegnate nel promuovere la valorizza- zione della identità femminile nella prospettiva

    (330/37) San Salvatore alle Coppelle San Salvatore alle Coppelle is a church of Rome in rione Sant'Eustachio in the Piazza delle Coppelle. History An engraving in the inside wall of the church states it was consecrated by Pope Celestine III on November 26 in 1195 which may refer to the original construction, although that may have been a rebuilding of an even older church. In a bull of Honorius III of 1222 the church was called de Cupellis, and in the catalogs of the 16th century, this name seems to derive from the fact that concentrated in the surrounding area the cupellari, manufacturers or cupelle Capelle, the typical Roman barrels with wooden staves capacity of about five gallons used for storing water, wine and vinegar. An ancient inscription, now no longer exists, said that the church was built over the house of Santa Abbasi, noble woman who bequeathed her life to works of mercy, in his own home by creating a Monte di Pietà, hence the name of the medieval church of San Salvatore de Pieta. Others derive the name from the proximity to the so-called Arco della Pietà, from the time of Trajan, (whish still existed in the 14th century, though in ruins). The epigraph also describes Pope Celestine III (1191-98) as having the church built or rebuilt. The original notice of consecration in 1196 is preserved on a wall in the church, together with a long list of relics provided. The (330/37) present Via delle Coppelle was part of a major pilgrim route in the Middle Ages, and many visitors to the church would have come to venerate these.

    (085/17) Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri ! Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, usually known only as Santa Maria degli Angeli, is a titular basilica church in Rome, built inside the frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to the angels and to the Christian slaves who died building the Baths of Diocletian. It is on the Piazza della Repubblica, and near the Termini train station. The church is also a personal monument of Pope Pius IV, whose tomb is in the apsidal tribune. History The church was built in the remains of the Baths of Diocletian by orders of Pope Pius IV (1559-1565), after a Sicilian priest, Fr. Antonio Del Duca, had a vision of angels in the ruins in 1541. The church was born as a result of the papal bull of Pope Pius IV of 27 July 1561 and took the name of “Beatissimae Virgini et omnium Angelorum et Martyrum”. Michelangelo designed it and started the work in 1563, and after his death in 1564 (incidentally the same year that Fr. Del Duca died) his design was completed by Jacopo Del Duca, nephew of Fr. Antonio and pupil of Michelangelo. Although the interior has changed considerably and the floor has been raised a few feet, this is one of the places where you can best appreciate the size and splendor of the imperial baths. (1) (2) (a) The church was granted to the Carthusians, who moved from their former monastery at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. They had a monastery built adajcent to it, possibly to a design by Michelangelo.

    (323/31) Sant’Apollinare alle Terme ! Sant'Apollinare alle Terme is an 18th century former collegiate church of ancient foundation located in the rione Ponte. It is titular, a minor basilica and part of the Prelature of Opus Dei. The dedication is to St Apollinaris, bishop of Ravenna and martyr. (1) History: An ancient, possibly 8th century church was built here near a Roman bath, hense the source of the name. It is said to have been dedicated in 780 by Adrian I., who, as we learn from Anastasius Bibliothecarius, presented it with sacred vestments. The first church was described as attached to a monastery of Byzantine-rite monks who had fled from persecution during the reign of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Isaurian at Constantinople. At this time the Eastern Empire ruled Rome from Ravenna, hence the dedication. Another function that the church took on from its foundation was the enshrinement of martyrs' relics taken from the catacombs. The church is mentioned in a document of 1281, referring to a canon of Sant'Apollinare. In the Catalogue of Turin in 1320 it is listed as a papal benefice, with eight priests. Under the church's high altar was a collection of martyrs' relics, and their names have been preserved: Tibertius, Eustrasius, Auxentius, Eugenius, Mardarius (or Bardarius) and Orestes. (1) (a) In 1574, Pope Gregory XIII gave the church and adjoining priests' house, which amounted to a small palazzo, to the Collegium Germanicum which was founded by Ignatius Loyola, and chartered in 1552 by Pope Julius II, and erected the two adjoining palaces.

    A Marxist view of ruination: José Saramago’s fictional version of the construction of Dom João V’s monastic complex at Mafra, Portugal Estelle Alma Maré Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria Email: [email protected] The subject of this article is the monastic complex at Mafra, Portugal, commissioned by Dom João V (King John V, 1689-1750). An overview of the historical circumstances of the building project is followed by José Saramago’s fictive version in his novel . Saramago describes the cause of the ruination of the Portuguese nation as the king’s egotistical desire for the largest monastic complex in Christendom. Saramago’s critique of the coerced labour required to construct the extensive edifice is discussed in terms of Marxist labour theory.     101/40 Sant'Ignazio di Loyola a Campo The Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola at Campus Martius is Roman Catholic titular church dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, located in Rome. Built in Baroque style between 1626 and 1650, the church functioned originally as Rectory church to the adjacent Collegio Romano, that moved in 1584 to a new larger building and became the Pontifical Gregorian University. [1] History The Collegio Romano opened very humbly in 1551, with an inscription over the door summing up its simple purpose: "School of Grammar, Humanity, and Christian Doctrine. Free. Plagued by financial problems in the early years, the Collegio Romano had various provisional centers. In 1560, Vittoria della Tolfa, Marchesa della Valle, donated her family isola, an entire city block and its existing buildings, to the Society of Jesus in memory of her late husband the Marchese della Guardia Camillo Orsini, founding the Collegio Romano. [1] Although the Jesuits got the Marchesa's land, they did not get any money from her for completing the church. Budgetary restraints compelled them to hire their own architect. Construction of the church was taken over by the Jesuit architect Giovanni Tristano. Built entirely by Jesuit labor, the church of the the Most Holy Annunciation was first used for worship in 1567. A three-aisled church dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata was built in the Collegio Romano between 1562 and 1567 on the foundations of the pre-existing construction. Since the earlier church had already been built to the height of the ground floor in 1555, there was no way for the Jesuits to expand the structure to hold the increasing number of students attending the Collegio Romano.

    Santa Maria Maggiore St Mary Major Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore Santa Maria Maggiore is a 5th century papal basilica, located in the rione Monti. and is notable for its extensive Early Christian mosaics. The basilica is built on the summit of the Esquiline hill, which was once a commanding position. (1) (i)! History Ancient times The church is on the ancient Cispius, the main summit of the Esquiline Hill, which in ancient times was not a heavily built-up area. Near the site had been a Roman temple dedicated to a goddess of childbirth, Juno Lucina, much frequented by women in late pregnancy. Archaeological investigations under the basilica between 1966 and 1971 revealed a 1st century building, it seems to have belonged to a villa complex of the Neratii family. (1) (k) Liberian Basilica - Foundation legend - Civil war According to the Liber Pontificalis, this first church (the so-called Basilica Liberiana or "Liberian Basilica") was founded in the August 5, 358 by Pope Liberius. According to the legend that dates from 1288 A.D., the work was financed by a Roman patrician John, and his wife. They were childless, and so had decided to leave their fortune to the Blessed Virgin. She appeared to them in a dream, and to Pope Liberius, and told them to build a church in her honor on a site outlined by a miraculous snowfall, which occurred in August (traditionally in 358). Such a patch of snow was found on the summit of the Esquiline the following morning. The pope traced the outline of the church with his stick in the snow, and so the church was built.

John the Baptist and the Evangelist at the Lateran, Cathedral of Rome, Mother and Head of all churches (003/29) History: On the façade, an inscription proclaims that this is SACROSANCTA LATERANENSIS ECCLESIA OMNIUM URBIS ET ORBIS ECCLESIARUM MATER ET CAPUT, "The Most Holy Lateran Church, Mother and Mistress of all churches of the city and the World". It is the first cathedral of Rome, where Emperor Constantine allowed the Pope to set up the episcopal chair after 312. The first mention in ancient sources is from 313, when a consistory of bishops was held in domum Faustae in Laterano. This refers to Fausta, Constantine's second wife, who was a convert. It is the first church not only in Rome but in the Christian world. The Popes lived in the Lateran palace until Clement V (1305-1314) transferred the papal seat to Avignon. After the return of the Pope to Rome in 1377, the Vatican palace was chosen as the papal residence. In this area, once stood a palace belonged to the Laterani family. Their house stood near the Basilica, probably towards the current Via Amba Aradam, and covered the entire land area that also includes the current basilica area. According to the "Annals" of Tacitus in 65 A.D. the palace and land was confiscated by the Emperor Nero, as Plautius Lateran, appointed consul for the year 65, conspired against the emperor himself in the conspiracy called the "Pisoni".

Officially named Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù all'Argentina, its façade is the first truly baroque façade. The church served as model for innumerable Jesuit churches all over the world, especially in the Americas. The Church of the Gesù is located in the Piazza del Gesù in Rome. First conceived in 1551 by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits Society of Jesus, and active during the Protestant Reformation and the subsequent Catholic Counter-Reformation, the Gesù was also the home of the Superior General of the Society of Jesus until the suppression of the order in 1773. History Since 1541 the Jesuits had officiated in the small church of Santa Maria della Strada, also known as Santa Maria degli Astalli, adjoining the house in which St. Ignatius de Loyola lived, which soon proved to be too small. St. Ignatius wished to build a new, larger church on the spot and to dedicate it, as he had his order, the the Name of Jesus. Although Michelangelo offered to design the church for free, the endeavor was funded by Alessandro Cardinal Farnese, grandson of Pope Paul III who had authorized the founding of the (089/42) Society of Jesus, in 1561. Ultimately, the main architects involved in the construction were Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, architect of the Farnesi, Giovanni Tristani S.J., and Giacomo della Porta. Construction began in 1568 after the design of Vignola who raised its walls to the height of the cornice, and finished by a Jesuit architect, Giovanni de Rosis, assisted by della Porta, who designed the façade, intervened actively in the construction of the cross-vault, dome, and apse.
