ST STEPHENS-IN-BRANNELL

St Stephens-in-Brannell is a township, parish and village, 3 miles north-east from Road station on the Cornwall (Great Western) railway, 5 west from and 7 north-east from , in the Eastern division of the county, west division of the hundred of Powder, St Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall, and . The parish includes several villages and hamlets. A branch of the extends from Burngullow station to . The church of St Stephen is a building of granite of the Early Decorated period, and consists of a chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled tower, with octagonal crocketed pinnacles, containing a peal of 6 fine toned bells, of which the first four were cast in 1730 and the others in 1799; the arch of the south doorway is Norman, with nail head ornament: a piscina remains in the chancel, and some ancient carving is worked into the panelling of the pulpit and desk: the font is sculptured with grotesque animals and foliated ornaments: this church was the burial place of the Tanners, of Court, and here, in 1652, was interred Hugh Wolridge M.D. of the universities of Cambridge and Brida, and a native of Penkivell: in a field near the church school, in the village of Nanpean, is the removed arcade of St Dennis’ church, placed there in 1847, by the lord of the manor, with the view of incorporating it in a new church: the whole has been restored gradually and thoroughly from 1854 to 1871 at considerable cost. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1694; burials 1695. The living is a rectory, yearly value from tithe rent-charge £780, net income £310 with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of Capt. Alfred Roger Taylor B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The mother church is St Michael Caerhayes, from which it was separated in 1852. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Bible Christians and one for the United Methodist Free Church, built 1883, on the site of the old one, and another for the same denomination at Coombe, in this parish. Fairs, July 23rd and October 9th. A cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1876, at a cost of £400, and is under the control of a burial board of 7 members. The higher portion of the parish has large china clay and works; the south and middle part is a farming and mining district. There is a quantity of marl on the , and Brennal estates. Capt. Cyril Dudley Fortescue, who is lord of the manor, Viscount Falmouth, Christopher Henry Thomas Hawkins esq J.P., D.L. are the principal landowners. The soil is callous; subsoil, granite. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasturage. The area is 9,002 acres; rateable value £15,662; and the population in 1881 was 3,228. Nanpean is a village 2 miles north-by-east. St George’s Mission church, opened in 1878, consists of apsidal chancel, nave and south aisle, with porch, vestry and a bell turret: the three centre windows are stained: the church will seat 150, free: attached to it is a cemetery, the land for which was given by the late Hon. G.M. Fortescue, who also gave a considerable sum towards the building fund of the church. Here are also Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels.
