Draft catalogue……………............................................................................................130 5 Abstract People of the Moana/Pacific/Oceanic diaspora living in Aotearoa New Zealand experience the uniqueness of belonging in a genealogical sense to Māori through the first Pacific migration about 800 years ago, while simultaneously holding the status of ‘tauiwi’ or non-indigenous. These children and next generations are distanced from the day-to-day nuances of being an ‘islander’ in their ancestral homes. This research considers how this geographical shift has separated first and second generations of children of the Pacific/Oceanic diaspora from those who remain indigenous in their Pacific homelands. This shift has naturally diminished contact with ‘home’ and all the things that ‘home’ could potentially mean. Successive generations of the diaspora have had little choice but to assimilate or attempt to guess at, or use inventive essentialist strategies, to try to feel more at home in their own bodies. For those raised by Islands-born parents, there remains evidence of cultural legacy upon which to build, and cultural distance issues are therefore less pronounced. However, for many others who learned the ways of Aotearoa Pākehā, and engaged with Māoritanga, a sense of cultural insecurity lingers through an unconscious distancing from perceived ‘islandness’. To date, I have not found language sufficient enough to articulate this phenomenon of feeling cultural unease effectively. I have coined a phrase which has assisted a move toward a more efficient and accessible vocabulary with which to describe a physical and metaphysical state: The Cold Islanders (henceforth written as CIs). It is not a term that necessitates any uptake by future readers, but one which states succinctly the way I feel in this world. Not born in the nurturing heat of our island homes, but in a place that experiences frost and snow; to be cold in the sense that to be ‘left out in the cold’ is to feel a sense of exclusion. To be a CI is to contend with self-hood continually and piecing bits of cultures that belong partially to one’s parents and grandparents, or also to European Aotearoa/New Zealand. I have designed a culturally safe navigational approach toward respectful ways that CIs can claim their indigeneity with confidence. I hope it assists in ensuring we are not intruding-upon or re- colonising Māori. A respectful space can occur for CIs in their making of art. My theory endeavours to establish that diasporic dislocation in one’s place of birth creates a new kind of Pasifika/Oceanic person. One, who is unable to be bound to their ancestral home, nor to their current one: that is, that there is physical and socially normative distance between us here in Aotearoa and the island homelands. And, that in fact, this time-space overlap occurs within their bodies, thus supporting my notions of the metaphysical space which I call the Cold Islands. I propose that the Cold Islanders’ bodies’ and art practice construct their Tūrangawaewae, their own indigenous metaphysical place to stand, manifesting in the Vā, where they claim, celebrate, and inhabit all of these disparate lands at once. 6 List of Figures Figure 1. On 22 June 1948, passengers disembarked from the HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Dock in Essex. Several hundred of these passengers had boarded the ship in Kingston, Jamaica, and many had travelled from around the Caribbean to Britain: a country inviting immigration from Commonwealth nations as it sought to rebuild itself after WWII. The Windrush generation and its legacy marked a vital sea change for British culture.     DOI 10.17953/aicrj.43.2.warren Reading Bodies, Writing Blackness: Anti-/Blackness and Nineteenth- Century Kanaka Maoli Literary Nationalism Joyce Pualani Warren June 5, 1850, journal entry written by fifteen-year-old Hawaiian Prince Alexander A Liholiho, the future King Kamehameha IV, details his experience of anti-Black discrimination on a train in Washington, DC. The conductor “told [him] to get out of the carriage rather unceremoniously,” because of his skin color, “saying that [he] was in the wrong carriage.”1 For Alexander Liholiho, a law school student as well as the future monarch, this diplomatic tour of the United States and Europe was an opportunity to interact with foreign heads of state. Although the conductor deferred to the prince after someone whispered into the official’s ear at a critical moment in the argument, Alexander Liholiho surmised in his entry, “he had taken me for somebodys servant [sic], just because I had a darker skin than he had. Confounded fool.”2 During a soiree at the White House only days earlier President Zachary Taylor and Vice President Millard Fillmore had treated him as an equal; now a train conductor cruelly abused him as a “servant” in need of correction. Perhaps ironically, the young prince had found the president’s “plain citizens dress” [sic] lacking in comparison to his own “belted & cocked” attire, yet none of the outward markers of his royalty registered with the conductor.3 Instead, the conductor misreads Alexander Liholiho’s body based on his racist assumption that a Black body, or a body approximating one, could occupy no other narrative than the one inscribed Joyce Pualani Warren is an assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

It presents a statistical evaluation of a bibliography of translated books and provides an overview of publishing this literature in Europe. The bibliography highlights some of the trends in publishing, including the distribution of languages and genres. This study offers an analysis of publishers involved in the dissemination of the translations and retraces the reasons for the proliferation of translated Indigenous books since the mid-1980s. It identifies Indigenous films, literary prizes and festivals as well as broader international events as central causes for the increase in translations. The popular appeal of Indigenous literature of Aotearoa/New Zealand has increased significantly over the last three decades. The translation of Indigenous books and their subsequent emergence in continental European markets are evidence of a perceptible change from a once predominantly local market to a now increasingly globally read and published body of literature. Despite the increase in the number of translations, however, little scholarship has been devoted to the history of translated Indigenous New Zealand literature.1 This study addresses that lack of scholarship by retracing the history of European translations of this body of literature and presenting extensive reference data to facilitate follow-up research. Its objective is to present a bibliography of translated books and book chapters and a statistical evaluation based on that bibliography.

As a follow-up to the previous Sunday’s fundraiser documentary about the Black Panther Party in the US, the Centre organised a panel discussion focussing on Women in the Polynesian Panthers and their Legacy. It was facilitated by Papatuanuku Nahi who welcomed the jam packed, mostly women, audience with a karanga that set the mood for the evening. The speakers’ panel was made up of Panther members, Miriama Rauhihi Ness and Dr Melani Anae, or (like our facilitator, Papatuanuku Nahi and her sister, Kaile Nahi- Taihia) women who traced their current activism directly to being raised by Panther parents. In this chapter we examine the political identifications with Blackness that emerged in another racist settler state – New Zealand. In pursuit of restitution for colonial injus- tices, the identification with Blackness provided for a deeper binding between the children of Tāne/Māui and Legba. Along with Māori we must now add to this journey their tuākana (elder siblings), the Pasifika peoples – especially those from islands that the New Zealand state enjoyed some prior imperial relationship with – who had also arrived in urban areas in increasing numbers during the 1960s. In this chapter, we shall first witness how young Pasifika activists learnt similar lessons to their Māori cousins in Ngā Tamatoa regarding Black Power, yet cultivated, through the activities of the Polynesian Panthers, a closer political identification with Blackness. We shall then turn to the high point of confrontation during this period, the anti-Apartheid resistance to the tour by the South African Springboks rugby team in 1981.

Social network platforms provide a variety of domains where indigenous-language communities are able to communicate in their own languages. Although the capability exists, is social networking being used by indigenous-language communities? This paper reports on one particular social networking platform, Twitter, by using two separate methodologies. First, Twitter statistics collated from the Indigenous Tweets website are analysed. The data show that languages such as Basque, Haitian Creole, Welsh, Irish Gaelic, Frisian and Kapampangan do have a presence in the “Twittersphere”. Further analysis for te reo Mäori (the Mäori language) shows that tweets in te reo Mäori are rising and peak when certain events occur. The second methodology involved gathering empirical data by tweeting in te reo Mäori. This served two purposes: it allowed an ancillary check on the validity of the Indigenous Tweets data and it allowed the opportunity to determine if the number of indigenous- language tweets could be infl uenced by the actions of one tweeter. * Senior Lecturer, Computer Science Department, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand.
