LONG ISLAND BUSINESS REPORT: MARCH 2015 THE STATE OF THE SUBURB Considered by many as “America’s First Suburb,” Long Island has long been a highly desirable place to live in the New York suburban area. But today, Long Island is in a state of flux: radically changing job markets and wage differentials; disparities in incomes and education; and new developments in many downtown areas are changing the look and even property values throughout the Island. Joining the Long Island Business Report this month is Larry Levy, Executive Dean for the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University. He sits down with host Jim Paymar to discuss the evolving suburban community on Long Island. “There is a realization, a consensus, that we need to do things differently….we need to focus on high tech, not just manufacturing, but education right on down to the high school level,” explained Mr. Levy. “We need to focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math education) so that eventually we can graduate engineers.” Mr. Levy provides a broad overview of the factors that are re-shaping the suburb. He asserts, “Long Island is as well positioned as almost any region in the country to lead this revolution in technology.” Long Island Business Report is a weekly half-hour program that provides an in-depth look at what needs to be done to make Long Island a more dynamic place to live and work by exploring the economic and business trends that impact the nearly three million people who call Nassau and Suffolk counties home. The program, now in its third season, has won PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25 AT 7:30PM multiple awards, including two Long Island Fair Media Council Folio Awards and a Press Club of Preview videos and more at Long Island Media Award. wliw.org/long-island-business-report MASTERPIECE CLASSIC: MR.
