http://akroterion.journals.ac.za THE INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY: AN ORGANISING PRINCIPLE IN HORACE’S EPODES? Sjarlene Thom (University of Stellenbosch) Over the years there have been various attempts to make sense of the Epodes as a collection, as well as of individual poems.1 Scholars who have focussed on the collection as a whole have tried generally grouping the poems according to metre2 or to subject matter into either different areas of criticism or different categories of invective.3 The subsequent scholarly debate centred on arguments why individual groups were identified and why a specific poem should fall into a specific group. My personal reaction to these attempts to structure the collection according to groups is rather negative for the following simple reason: too many persuasive alternatives are possible. No musical composition could at one and the same time be described for instance as a sonata, a suite or a prelude and fugue. If a piece of music displays characteristics of all these musical forms, a broader organisational principle has to be found to accommodate the individual sections. In the same way then – since so many different possible ways have been identified in which to pack out various groups of Epodes – it seems to make more sense to look at the Epodes as a unit in which a variety of cross-references or, to continue the musical analogy, variations on a theme, all support a central statement. There have also been scholars who focused on individual poems who have come up with striking or even ingenious individual interpretations, but more often than not they then ignored or discounted the larger unit in which the poems functioned. -

JOHN DRYDEN AND THE LATE 17TH CENTURY DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE LECTURE 16 (C) BY ASHER ASHKAR GOHAR 1 CREDIT HR. JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire. -

Jamil Amman Arab University, Amman. Jordan. Abstract— This article is designed to highlight the innovation of George Farquhar in his play The Beaux Stratagem, and to illuminate the factors behind its everlasting appeal to audiences since its first performance in 1707 and after. The play still retains a magnificent appeal to all audiences for centuries, and remains alluring and fascinating to even the 21st Century audiences. Its magnitude lies in the sure-fire comic devices and witty characters as well in the profound insight adjoined the comic situations and events. As a transitional playwright, Farquhar has one foot in the declining traditions of the Comedy of Manners, and the other foot in the growing vogue of Sentimental Comedy, employing some character types of the old tradition with innovative alteration, together with introducing prototypes of the coming sentimental types. To keep pace with the shift in tone, he modifies the purpose of his play to suit the specifications of critics, moralists and theatre goers. With its innovative particulars, it sets an early premise for the approaching changes in the dramatic conventions and trends of the 18th Century comedies. More crucially, it forms a gateway to move into the world of sentimentalism, or a bridge between the two. Sometimes we can be accomplishing more than we even know, by doing things such as participating in activism or causes we believe in, vol- unteering, going to school to educate ourselves or even actions that are often very important but easily overlooked like being a good parent, a generous friend or being a loving partner, that all help build identity, self-worth and help the people around us. The ways we can improve the lives of others and ourselves is endless. With every goal that is accomplished, a new goal lies not far ahead and here at the MultiCultural Center, we have experienced a semester full of achievements made by students that have brought cultural unity and education within our campus as we are constantly seeking ways to make improvements while still having fun at the same time! The events created by students, faculty and members of the community for Black History Month, Q- Fest, Celebración Latina and the MultiCultural Center’s annual Diversity Conference are shown throughout the newsletter. -

He talks about his encounter with the Ku Klux Klan as a young child with his grandparents. At an early age he became involve in the numbers system which is also known as cubing. He also shares his experiences of growing up as a black man within the city of Gainesville.
